I mean, the more I think about it, “what is homecoming” is a stupid fucking question. I’m a sarcastic person myself; sometimes, if I’m presented with a senseless question, I’ll meet it with a senseless answer.

Maybe he was just giving it back.

I hear you, but that reporter was teeing it up for him to talk about the great alumni of the program coming back and the family environment they have.

Sarcastic response? Maybe... but if it was, it’s doubly damaging because he was being spoon fed an opportunity to talk about the greatness of the program’s history. And we all know, that’s what they live on these days.

Ah, further context helps. Either way, he just never knows how to come out on top in those situations.

Right. It sounded to me like the reporter was giving him a softball question to kick-start things or to break an awkward tension.

If he intended that to sound earnest, he sounded like an incoherent mess.
If he intended that to sound sarcastic, it fell flat and he sounded like an idiot.

Yeah, could come up with about 50 examples of how he could have made it work for him... and two that could have been worse, one of which involves pissing on the reporter’s phone.
