Michigan was overrated last year at #3 yes. This year though, #9 sounds about right. Their defense is better than last year's, and I'm not sure that their offense is worse (losing Avant hurts, but Manningham could be better by the end of his career). I think they're the 2nd best team in the Big Ten hands down, and belong right about #9. Are you going to tell me Iowa or PSU is better? MSU?

I think Iowa could be better. Right now I have us finishing first and Michigan 2nd but they're definitely not the "hands down" 2nd best team in the Big-10.

Hands down they have at least the 2nd best talent in the Big 10, but no coach in the country this side of Larry Coker knows how to suck an egg with phenomenal talent like LLLLoyd Carr. I would say they lose 4 games this year, but scUM never loses 4 games (or so I've heard) so I'll say they lose 5. :p

On paper scUM is the second best team in the Big Ten this year, and as much as I hate them, I'd be willing to wager they will give a run at the conference this year. LLLLoyd's pants are on fire now, and he was most definately embarrassed by last years debacle. I think what it will come down to is how big of a difference getting rid of Hermann and Malone will make. English is bound to be an upgrade from Hermann's stone age defense, but I don't think DeBord will be much of a step up from Malone. He ran the scUM offense from '97-'99 and didn't exactly light the world on fire. I know they won 1/2 a title in '97, but everyone knows their defense won that title, and I really don't think Henne knows how to play in big games...0-6 vs ND, tOSU and bowls anyone? I look for the race to come down to us and scUM (as it should) at the Shoe, a game that JT and Troy(in his final home game) will not allow us to lose.

I have no idea about what English and DeBord bring, but Hermann and Malone leaving is addition by subtraction, IMHO. The problems at UM run deeper than that though. The UM players are poorly conditioned and poorly coached across the board. Hermann's switch from the 4-3 to the 3-4 and back again to the 4-3 set their defenses development back four years, and I don't think that will be turned around in one off season.

As for the Big-10, I think the conference crown will be between Ohio State and Iowa. Michigan has Notre Dame, Penn State, and Ohio State all on the road, and neither Michigan State or Iowa at their place are pushovers. Michigan will lose three or four games (again) this season, which will result in nothing better than third place in the conference, at best.

Based on Mandel's rankings, this gives us games with preseason #2 (at Texas), #9 (scUM), #18 (at Iowa), & #19 (Penn State) for sure with a bowl game pending. I don't know what the average preseason rankings are yet (it's still pretty early, anyways), but this looks like one of the "easier" schedules we've had in some time, if one could even call it easy.
