Spring Football - 2005 (mega-merge)

The only thing that can keep Patterson out of the starting lineup is his own durability. He is out of position at times, but his motor and athletic ability are pretty awsome. I have been a big fan of his for some time and I am hoping he will stay healthy enough this year to really make an impact. I think his future is @ DE.

CSTV is announcing that it will webcast the Buckeye spring game at 8pm on 28 April to be followed by a program called Buckeye Primetime.

Just think, someday soon, no matter where you are in the world, you'll be able to tune in to Buckeye games. I'm gonna be sitting in Africa watching the spring game!!!!

Buckeyes Ready to Show Their Stuff in Jersey Scrimmage
By John Porentas The annual jersey scrimmage takes place in Ohio Stadium today. It will pit the OSU offense against the OSU defense in a contest which awards points to the defense in various unorthodox ways. The winner of the scrimmage gets to practice in the home red jerseys, the loser wears the white.

"It does mean something," said OSU running back Antonio Pittman. "Who wants to wear road white jerseys on your home field when you're practicing? We have them now, and we're going to keep them," said Pittman, speaking for the offense.

Pittman will be just one of many players under scrutiny in the scrimmage. It is closed to the public, but historically, it is where post ions can be won or lost.

"It's going to be real big for both sides of the ball," said Pittman.

"It's going to be a real evaluation of who got better throughout the spring."

Quarterback Justin Zwick is anxious to get the scrimmage going.

"It's a chance to put all this stuff that we've been doing the last couple of weeks together, to go against our defense which is a great test for us," said Zwick.

"It's just a lot of fun to get out there and get in the stadium and get that feeling back."

The jersey scrimmage is for bragging rights and is a place to showcase improvement, but a lot of work has been done already this spring. Here's a brief update to date on some of the more interesting post ions that may be up for grabs in the fall.

Running back: Antonio Pittman and Eric Haw have been locked in a battle for the running back spot. Both say they have made strides this spring. At the moment, it appears that Pittman may have the upper hand, but that could change in the jersey scrimmage or spring game.

"He gets most of the reps with the ones, I get a few here and there. I get all the reps with the twos," said said on Friday.

"It's stiff competition. Me and Antonio, we battle every day," said Haw.

Though the two are competing for a position, they are both working to make each other better as well.

"I know we talk about everything," said Haw.

"We discuss coverages coverages, things like that. Basically, the competition makes us both better."

Unlike last season when both Pittman and Haw were down the depth chart behind seniors Brandon Joe, Lydell Ross and Maurice Hall, the two youngsters are now front and center and getting plenty of chances to improve.

"I think we're both getting the work that we need," said Pittman.

"It's needed reps between the two of us, unlike last year when everything was spaced out. You would only touch the ball five or six times. Now, with just two of us, we touch the ball at least 15 times a day."

Haw is competing with Pittman, but also seems to enjoy testing himself against some of the Buckeye defensive stalwarts, such as linebacker A. J. Hawk. He even issued Hawk a warning.

"You've got to keep it a secret, but yes I have. I'm hunting for him," Haw quipped.

Haw claims to have avoided being lit up by Hawk thus far this spring, and says he is confident he can continue that trend.

"No, he's going to miss me. He's got cement shoes" said Haw.

Hawk may not exactly have cement shoes, but Haw has anything but cement shoes. He hasn't run the 40 recently, but his times are impressive.

"After spring ball we'll run it. I'll try to hit that 4.2 area. My best is 4.21," Haw said.

Both Pittman and Haw will get plenty of opportunity to show their wares in the jersey scrimmage.

"It's going to be exciting," said Pittman.

"We going to get about 50 plays, each back, so it's going to be a good day of work for both of us."

Cornerback: Sirjo Welch is getting a hard look at corner this spring. According to Welch, he has some definite areas in which he needs to improve, and he is working hard on those areas.

"The thing I do best, I tackle good. I think that's the best thing I do. As far as my footwork, it needs to be better. Once I get all that down.It will help me cover better," said Welch.

"Finding the ball when it's in the air is what I'm really trying to improve on.

"I'm good at sticking receivers off the run, but once the ball is in the air I have a bad habit of looking at the ball before I get a hold of the receiver. That's the one bad habit that I have. Once I get over that, I'll be OK."

Welch has identified his weakness, but says overcoming it is easier than just saying what to do. His tendency to look for the ball is something he is working hard to overcome.

"You want to (look for it before you should), but at the same time you have to know when to look at the ball. If you look at it too early, the receiver will be somewhere else when you look back at him," said Welch

"You watch his hands and hear your teammates holler 'Ball!' Once I hear the word ball and see his hands go up, that's when my hands go up," Welch said.

Offense Cruises To Easy Win In Scrimmage

By Steve Helwagen Managing Editor
Date: Apr 17, 2005

The offense retained possession of the coveted scarlet practice jerseys with a commanding 93-39 win over the defense in Sunday's jersey scrimmage at Ohio Stadium. Ted Ginn Jr. had a 30-yard touchdown catch in the win.

Ohio State held its jersey scrimmage Sunday at Ohio Stadium and the offense retained the coveted scarlet jerseys with a 93-39 victory over the defense.

The offense had wrested control of the jerseys away from the defense last fall with a 72-53 win.

Sunday's scrimmage was closed except for players' families, high school coaches and invited guests.

Even after interviews late this afternoon, no statistics were available. However, we have learned:

* QB Justin Zwick threw two touchdown passes against one interception.

* QB Troy Smith had neither a touchdown nor a pick, but did run for a touchdown.

* QB Todd Boeckman may have thrown two interceptions and had a fumble. It was unclear how many touchdowns he might have thrown.

* Flanker Ted Ginn Jr. caught a 30-yard touchdown from Zwick, operating across the middle and making several would-be tacklers miss on his way to the end zone.

* Split end Devon Lyons caught the other Zwick TD on a 10-yard grab.

* Linebacker Curt Lukens had two interceptions and defensive end Jay Richardson logged one when he dropped into coverage on a zone blitz.

* Safety Donte Whitner had the hit of the day on Lyons, breaking up a crossing route.

* The offense capped the scrimmage by coming off its own goal line and driving 98 yards for a score. Erik Haw had a nice run on a stretch play to get that drive started.

Stay tuned: We will have quotes from Jim Tressel and several players shortly.

Jersey Scrimmage Review

From the-ozone.net
Football: It appears that the era of OSU football dominated by defense may be ending.
The OSU offense put a good old fashioned slobber knocker on the defense today in the annual jersey scrimmage, winning by a final score of 95-39. Though the media was not allowed to see the scrimmage, Head Coach Jim Tressel and selected players were available after the scrimmage. We'll have comments from them for you later. Until then, here are a few quickie notes:
* The three quarterbacks each started the same number of drives, but their reps were determined by how long the drives lasted. According to the players who were at the game, Justin Zwick threw for two touchdowns with one interception, Troy Smith threw for no touchdowns and no interceptions, and Todd Boeckman threw for no touchdowns and two interceptions.
* Safety Donte Whitner had a very big hit on receiver Devon Lyons in the scrimmage. Lyons was down for about a minute, but was able to get up and later get back into the scrimmage and make some plays.
* Antonio Pittman and Eric Haw had about an equal number of snaps, but Pittman may have made a few more plays than Haw, though Haw did not have what anyone described as a bad day.
* Ted Ginn made the play of the day when he took an eight yard pass from Zwick and turned it into a 25 yard touchdown reception on a play in which everyone, including Jim Tressel, thought he was tackled and had no chance of escaping.
More later.

Though the defense got smashed, I am still impressed with the highlights given for the defenders. Obviously they werent covering as great as they should be - but then again, hard to do against great players. Zwick having two TDs sounds really good but the INT tarnishes it for the fact that he was very consistant in games last year with throwing bad passes into coverage without thinking, lets just hope its because we have great defenders. Kinda dissapointed that Smith didnt have any TDs to mark his territory a bit stronger.

don't read too much into either an offense win or a defense loss......this is a situational scrimmage that played in the favor of the offense...

what it did show was individual development in a few areas....

just spoke to staff and received good news all the way around...no major injuries and lots of contributors..

only knock was that we still haven't found that DE to rush the passer--and we have to remedy that quickly...otherwise they are very satisfied.....

OL seems to have made HUGE strides....and we are only showcasing a mere fraction of our offensive capability--we could be scary...

I wonder how many new formations they tried out during the scrimmage? This is what the Dispatch articled today:

"A scrimmage today is closed to the public and the media.

Asked if it were because the team was working on some secret things this spring, Tressel smiled and said, "Yeah theres some secrets going on. That wishbone we'vet put in, I just dont want you guys to have a good look at it."
Thats pretty exciting news, though its a pretty disclosed comment. I cant wait till next Saturday to see these players and new forms.

Noted on BuckNuts:

-Josh Houstoin was 2 of 3 for Field Goals. He hit a 45 yarder and attempted to nail a 50yarder but hit high on the uprights, flanking no good. He also hit a 38 yard PAT (after a penalty was enforced).

- Tressel was pretty upset with the Defense today and how they played.
