Springboro (8-0) vs. Greenville (6-2)
When: 7:30 p.m. today

Where: Harmon Field, Greenville

2004 result: Did not play

Outlook: Green Wave is the toughest obstacle in the Panthers' quest for an undefeated regular season. Bullish FB Luke Rosengarten has picked up the slack in the running game. Daniel Fee (No. 2 on the all-time rushing list) has been hampered by a bothersome knee. State-ranked and senior-laden Boro needs to keep fresh and poised for a lengthy postseason. Defense is stingy with tackle David Guysels, LB duo of Josh Ballard and Luke Diemusch and senior DB Eric Wenzler. The Panthers are scoring 33-plus and allowing only 13. Big-play WR Ryan Kerns has to be accounted for. He is averaging over 17 yards a catch and has developed a nice connection with savvy QB Clay Coomer. OL Tyler Trent should garner all-star honors.

Division II: Panthers a favorite in Region 8, but stingy 'D' could help Carroll

Favorites: No. 1 Springboro, No. 2 Cincinnati Mount Healthy — the Panthers have overcome their nemesis (Carroll) and key injuries to roll to 10-0. Winton Woods is a quality No. 8 seed but Springboro is the heavy favorite to get out of this region.

Winton Woods at Springboro

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today at Springboro HS, 1675 South Main Street.

RECORDS: Springboro 10-0, Winton Woods 7-3.

WHAT TO WATCH: Winton Woods will try to spring RB Hosea Simpson (1,578 yards, 22 TDs), who is one of the area's quickest backs. Warriors QB Julian Johnson (777 yards rushing, eight TDs) is a big threat himself. Springboro, the No. 1 seed in this Division II regional, has a balanced offense that runs for 201 yards a game and throws for about 166 per game. Ohio State recruit Jake Ballard (6-7, 255 pounds) is a Springboro tight end.

BOTTOM LINE: Winton Woods is the underdog, but could make things interesting with its big-play offense.

Springboro wins OT thriller

By Ron Jackson
Dayton Daily News
SPRINGBORO | A scintillating defensive stand on the 1-yard line and a clutch 41-yard field goal by Mike Ford preserved Springboro's perfect season Friday night.

It all came in overtime of the Division II Region quarterfinals at Panther Stadium. The Panthers escaped with a 38-35 win before a jubilant partisan crowd of 4,700.

Tempering the jubilant victory was a knee injury to all-Ohio candidate David Ghysels (defensive lineman), who will be out at least two weeks.

In the OT session, Springboro moved the ball from the 20 to the 12 in overtime and called on Ford who drilled the field goal.

Winton Woods, behind the quicksilver duo of Hosea Simpson and quarterback Jullian Johnson quickly picked up a first down on the 5-yard line. Boro's defense stiffened. Then on a fourth and goal Johnson ran into his fullback and was immediately stopped by a gang of Panthers.

"We just wanted to apply pressure to the quarterback there and he helped a little by slipping when he went to change directions," said Springboro end Jake Ballard. "What a win. I'm on cloud nine right now. We move on, and that's all that matters."

The historic season continues as the Panthers set a school record for victories with 11. They will advance to play next Friday against Miami Trace and its aerial circus triggered by Miles Schlichter.

"No one said it was going to be easy," sighed winning coach Rodney Roberts. "Our kids didn't give up. Anything can happen in the postseason. They kept fighting. We're all living right."

Springboro, No. 5 in Ohio, wasted no time, starting the game with a 21-0 onslaught behind the crispy wing-T running of Matt Klein and Tim Dettwiller. Klein scored on runs of 2 and 58 yards while Dettwiller scored on a 12-yard run. Klein finished with 152 yards on 19 carries and 4 touchdowns.

"It all came too easy and too quick," Roberts said.

But Winton Woods (7-4) showed why they are one of the state's top rushing teams with over 330 yards a game. The next big play never seems to be to far away from the Warriors. They countered, outscoring Boro 35-7 in the next three quarters and Simpson's 2-yard run made it 35-28 with 7:38 to go in the game.

"Speed, speed and more speed. We couldn't contain it," Roberts said.
Quarterback Johnson's lethal option runs produced unofficially 195 yards. Simpson added 97 yards.

Klein's 10-yard run and the PAT at 1:33 tied the game up, setting up Fords heroics in overtime.

"The trap worked for us," Klein said. "They (Winton Woods) proved a lot tougher than a No. 8 seed. I had confidence we could come back, but it got scary there and our season hung in the balance."

Injury update.....

Ghysels Doubtful for Regional Semifinal

Springboro nose guard David Ghysels is listed as doubtful for Friday's game against Miami Trace in the D-II regional semifinals at Princeton's Viking Stadium. The All-Ohio candidate sprained his MCL in the knee.

"It's a loss, but we feel good about Scott Schrockman stepping in and doing a nice job for us," Springboro head coach Rodney Roberts said.

"Fortunately, if we keep winning David will be back in a couple weeks.

Knowing his determination, he'll want to play as soon as possible."

Springboro backs run wild

Dettwiller runs for 190 yards, Klein 151; Panthers win 38-19

SHARONVILLE — What a rush. Springboro's perfect season remains intact after pummeling Miami Trace, 38-19, in the Division II Region 8 semifinals.

Boro's one-two rushing punch of Tim Dettwiller and Matt Klein carried it to another come-from-behind victory and into state contention.
One flattens linemen with his broad shoulders (Klein), the other slips past them with elusiveness (Dettwiller).

"They're very complementary as our version of 'Thunder and Lightning,' " said Boro coach Rodney Roberts. "We challenged everybody at halftime (facing a 13-10 deficit) to start playing with an attitude. Matt and Tim set the tone with their hard-nosed running."

Dettwiller picked the right time to have his career-best game. The slippery 5-foot-8, 160-pound halfback produced 190 yards on 17 attempts and scored two touchdowns. Klein bulled for 151 yards in 19 carries. The duo had the wing-T humming to the delight of a large royal blue contingent and a crowd of 4,500. Dettwiller found the artificial turf at Princeton High School's Viking Stadium to his liking.

"They kept pounding, kept pounding and just wore us down," said Miami Trace coach Jeff Conroy, whose team finished at 9-3. "We lost a step or two in the second half with our 16 or 17 two-way players. We couldn't handle their criss-cross, misdirection offense. Springboro is a senior ballclub on a mission and it's going to be hard to derail them.

"You just can't simulate their precise wing-T offense in practice," Conroy continued. "Or a 6-7, 265-player like Jake Ballard."

The 12-0 Panthers, ranked No. 5 in Ohio, produced a lot of mileage running to their left side behind Ballard, Eric Adams and Josh Evans.

"They couldn't stop our sweep or misdirection," said Dettwiller, who had TD runs of 43 and 3. "They loaded up to stop Matt and the trap, and I ran wild and took advantage of the running lanes they gave me. Guys up front did a wonderful job."

Super sub Steven Funk (remember his name) added a crucial 35-yard touchdown, putting his team ahead 24-13 with 7:40 to go. And the Boro defense earned some self-respect after allowing 35 points against Winton Woods in the playoff opener. They grounded Miles Schlichter, holding him to 10-of-21 passes for 191 yards and two interceptions and 13 yards in 12 carries. Schlichter, an All-Ohio quarterback in D-III last year, entered the game with 1,450 yards in the air and over 650 on the ground.

Boro's all-around effort sets up a All-Mid-Miami League North regional final next Friday against nemesis Carroll. Boro blanked the Patriots 23-0 on Sept. 16.

Carroll takes down Boro

By Ron Jackson
Dayton Daily News
MIDDLETOWN | Carroll bounced Springboro from the state-title picture and thrust itself into the Final Four for the second year in a row.

It all happened Friday night in the Division II, Region 8 championship game. The determined Patriots smudged Boro's 12-0 slate, ripping them 20-7 in front of 5,500 fans at chilly Barnitz Stadium. They will play in the state semifinals next Friday. The site and opponent will be determined Sunday by the OHSAA.

While the Panthers played like they had frostbite, the opportunistic Patriots capitalized on a costly Boro pass interference and two Boro interceptions in the first half to open up a stunning 20-0 lead at the break.
The decision turned the tables on top-seed and the state's No. 5 Boro who blanked Carroll 23-0 Sept.16.

Known mostly for its ground-bound split veer attack, sixth-seeded Carroll came out and threw three times in its first possession. A 37-yard hookup from Blake Horvath to Clint Bartlett put the Patriots on the board. An interference call on a third-and-five kept the drive alive for Carroll.
"We thought we could catch 'em off guard a little bit with the pass," Clint Bartlett said. "We practiced it all week. Blake did a nice job with the read route and hit me when I made the cut."

The Carroll defense, the Mid-Miami League's stingiest against the rush, stuffed Boro's high-octane wing-T. Josh King produced two crucial sacks early and Jason Riggs was his usual self, creating havoc sideline to sideline. Mike Kinstedt, a 240-pound lineman, and linebacker Tony Chitwood made some critical stops as well.

Playmaker Matt Garrison intercepted a pass on Boro's 48 with 10:35 to go in the second quarter. The ball went in and out of receiver Ryan Kern's hands.
"I was tailing Kerns (6-foot-4) by a yard and fortunately the ball went right through his hands and I was right there to pick it," the 5-9 Garrison said.
Five plays later Carroll capitalized on a Eric McComas' 2-yard run.

McComas delivered with a career game, rushing for 101 yards in 19 carries, a breakthrough performance.

In what coach Steve Bartlett called "a huge, crucial play, Garrison intercepted another Clay Coomer pass with 1:11 left, setting his team up at the Panthers' 21-yard line. The pass deflected off of Carroll end Mitch Coleman and the instinctive Garrison snapped it up.

"Matthew sometimes is puzzling and drives you nuts in practice, but under the lights he is a gamer and he once again proved that," said coach Steve Bartlett. "He's an extremely smart player and put himself in position to make game-turning plays."

Horvath connected with tight end Scott Shear over the middle for a 7-yard touchdown with 21 seconds left in the first half. Horvath went 2-for-7 in the passing department, but he made his completions count. They were both touchdowns.

"Our offense put our defense in bad position in the first half and it killed us," said Springboro coach Rodney Roberts, whose team's historic season ends at 12-1. "We have to catch that pass (Garrison's first interception) and we didn't execute. The bottom line is we got outhustled and outplayed upfront. Give Carroll all the credit. If we had to lose to anybody, I was glad it was Carroll. They have a class coach and program."

It was the second year in a row that Carroll terminated Boro's season. Last year Carroll won in a come-from-behind thriller at Welcome Stadium.
The Patriots, 11-2, held its opponent to 101 yards rushing. Coomer was 13 of 30 for 126 yards and three interceptions.

"We felt that we had to pressure Coomer and let him be the one to make the plays and he came up short," Riggs said. "This is a very satisfying win.
They embarrassed us in September and we were confident coming in that we could make amends."
