    • I noticed on the spring roster a walk-on SS from Punahou School here on Oahu (although they list his hometown as Detroit). I looked up his coach's e-mail on the Punahou website and just sent him an e-mail asking him about Scott. I'll let you know what the coach says if he replies, but has anyone here heard anything about him? This is the first I've seen anything about the kid.
     
    Just got this e-mail from Coach Ane of Punahou High School, where Wes went to school:

    "Hi Bill, Wes did attend Punahou High School and started for three years on our team. He played out of position because we were so small. He played Defensive End weighing in at about 185 to 195 pounds. He played extremely well for us and did a great job. His family is from Michigan and his dad played at Michigan State. I also went to Michigsan State and played for Duffy and was part of the team that beat the THEN NUMBER ONE TEAM IN THE LAND Ohio State in the last second. There was some controversy involved especially since the game was played at MIchigan State. If you remember it was the game that one Ref signaled TD and another one ruled that time had finished before the snap. The ruling was you can end the game on an Offensive penalty which was also called at the time. But both teams left the field not sure who won, it was an awesome game. But back to Wes he is a great young man who has to learn a new position and make the move at a top ten school, pretty tough but he is working at it. Interesting that the other person I work with also went to Ohio State and bleeds for the school, oh well! Hope this helps and if you hear anything about Wes that I could pass on to the team let me know, thanks for the interest"

    It's cool that his high school coach is Big Ten alumni. I want to check out the tape of the spring game and see if Wes saw any action...

    Mili - nice post here and good that Coach Ane took time to answer your E-mail. His recollection of that 1974 OSU-MichiganState game brought back
    some unkind memories. It was actually a worse feeling than the one I had over the 69' loss to Scum. It will be interesting to follow this young mans 4 years at OSU now that we know you found him. Great job.

    Hopefully this can open up a pipeline from here in the islands...loads of big, tough kids here. For example, Dominic Raiola, who was the Rimington Trophy winner at Nebraska in 2000, and his brother Donovan who is playing center for Wisconsin and is on the Rimington Trophy watch list this year, are from here.

    Today, a poster on the O-Zone asked about Wes Scott, was directed to this thread, and had this to add--

    Hawaii Buckeye: Mahalo for the info... Punahou is a great school academically... not really known as an Island football power... compared to St Louis, Kahuku, Kamehameha, et al. West coast schools have recruited HI well in last few years. Large number of quality players per capita here. PAC-10 and others have done well here. I would obviously like to see the Buckeyes do better here.

    stlbuck: Maybe not now, but they were once... Kala Ane to Mich St., I think Rockne Freitas went there as well..OT for the Lions. They kicked my schools butt every time we played them.

    Wes isn't a "real Hawaiian" in the sense he's not originally from here...I think his dad was military, and his hometown is listed as Detroit. But it's still nice that a kid from the islands, regardless if he's not of actually Hawaiian ancestry, is on the team...it can only help us in future connections with the islands.
