Star Wars (May the Force be with you)

Just got back - one of the most distracting movie-going experiences of my life.

Nothing against the flick. Great special effects, lots of action, and easily the best storyline of the last three.

However, there were two guys behind me that came in drunk and somehow smuggled beer into the theatre with them - even spilled it on my back when they were sitting down. Halfway through the flick they got in a fight with the guy next to them and he left bleeding. After that I could tell by the distinct aroma that they had lit up a couple of joints - even offered to sell their extra to the folks around them.

At that point I couldn't take it any more. I stood up, turned around, and asked if they would autograph my jersey.

There are 30 plot scripts for 7, 8, and 9 all over the web. Rumors I have heard is for there is be a tv series that follows up Return.

Lucas has hinted at a 7-8-9, but has recently stated publicly that he's done with Star Wars. He's also going to leave the CEO position of Lucasfilm to see if the company can survive (quote, unquote), "without him or a Star Wars film."

I will tell you this, unequivocably: there is no script for 7-8-9, and I would be shocked if Lucas had any idea what it would be. Remember, he only had a rough outline for what the prequels would be, not a script. An even with that, he still made up most of the material at the time of the writing until post-production.

Roger Ebert stated that he expects 20th Century Fox to put pressure on Lucas for Sequels because the franchise is such a cash cow.

Sorry, but the original ideas for Episodes 7-9 no longer exist. If you go back to Lucas' comments in the early 1980s, there were 9 episodes, but all of this was changed when Lucas made Return of the Jedi.

According to Lucas' biography, Skywalking, Episode 6 was to have Luke defeat/kill Vader, but in doing so fall victim to the dark side. He was to replace Vader at the Emperor's right hand. After this, the rough sketches of the final three episodes (7-9) focused on the search for the "other Skywalker", her confronting Luke, and Luke's redemption and the Emporer's defeat. It is important to note that Leia was not originally Luke's twin sister.

When Lucas decided that Return of the Jedi would be the end of the story, he changed the original concept and made Leia "the other Skywalker" and dealt with the redemption of Vader.

Now this is not to say that future Episodese will not be made. Someday Lucas or his family will allow someone else to play in the Star Wars universe...there is too much money to be made for it not to happen. However, the creation of Episodes 7-9 would have to be a new, original concept.

As for my comments on Revenge of the Sith, I will post them tomorrow as it is late.

Saw it today.

The only thing that bothered me was that I didn't feel there was nearly sufficient reason or urgency, I guess for Skywalker to turn to the dark side.
He goes from "What have i done?" like he feels grief and remorse for stopping Sam Jackson from killing Palpatine - to "OK, I'll be your apprentice" 5 seconds later. i just didn't get it. also thought Amidala, who was always wise beyond her years, became suddenly stupid in regards to Annakin's actions and the politics going on at the time.
For me, the whole point of this movie was to see why / how Skywalker became Vader - not to see how many back flips Yoda could do. On that main point, I wasn't satisfied.
Other than that, though, great movie all the way through. Christopher Lee gets killed again - I'm trying to remember a charachter he has played that lived.

NDad: I've seen most of Lee's movies, and the only one I can remember him living through was Episode II...of course to set up a quick death in Episode III

I agree that one of my biggest disappointments was what they turned Padme into...she went from "one tough cookie" as my wife said after Episode II into what basically was a "cry and deny" stereotypical female character in Episode III. I was very disappointed by this.

I actually enjoyed most of the Yoda moments, but I too was disappointed by the conversion story. I liked the "you don't get what you want when you make a deal with the devil" type thing, but I thought the scene when he woke up in the suit was absolutely horrible...and quite frankly I don't get how the fire went out from when he was a blazing inferno for him to live to that point in the first place. And you're right...it was like he was consumed by the dark side in like 2 seconds flat.

But overall I still liked it...I would have liked to see Dooku live a little longer and show some of the same power he had in II....but it couldn't approach perfect, or it would have been 5 hours long.

NightmaresDad: "He goes from "What have i done?" like he feels grief and remorse for stopping Sam Jackson from killing Palpatine - to "OK, I'll be your apprentice" 5 seconds later."

All the stuff that frustrated Anakin, leading to his turn, was in the original screenplay and the novel, but cut out of the movie because it was too long.

For example, if you notice, Anakin apologizes to Obi-Wan (they have a sensitive "Master to Apprentice" talk to straighten things out) before Obi-Wan heads to Utapu. The very next scene, Anakin is pissed at Obi-Wan, and asks Padme: "Obi-Wan was here, wasn't he!?"

Well, what was cut out in between that is this: Anakin has hardly been sleeping for weeks because of the Padme dream. He's becoming disturbed & is teetering. He's very, VERY offended by the Council's request of him to spy on Palpatine, and is begining to distrust the Jedi & believe in what the Chancellor has told him. The straw that breaks the camel's back (mentioned in the movie, but never shown) is that Obi-Wan notices this & goes to Padme's apartment in the morning (kindof sneaks in w/o Anakin's knowledge) to speak with her about Anakin's problems. When Anakin goes into Padme's apartment (in the movie) he senses that Obi-Wan was there on her couch earlier that day & becomes jealous & enraged.

He's then even more disturbed, hasn't slept, and goes to Palpatine's office, learns the truth, yadda, yadda, you know the rest ...

Another scene that was cut out was Padme, Mon Mothma, & Bail Organa begining to scheme & form the Rebel Alliance, a young Han Solo (being raised by Wookies) on Kashykk, & Yoda going to Dagobah in the end. The Deleted Scenes on the DVD is going to be a disc onto itself.

I saw it last night and was not disappointed. I have not followed the series in detail and was therefore less offended by the first two prequels than many other people. Certainly, there were alternative endings and the plot he chose for this one could've been handled differently in many ways, but it was perfectly ok with me as is (although I would be interested in seeing the extended dvd). I liked the closure III brings. I like that I saw the first one when I was my oldest daughter's current age. I like (and I don't mean this negatively) that I don't have to see another Star Wars film.

I will add that there has been a ton of books ok'd by Lucas to continue the Star Wars story. The original ones that I recall are the books written by Timothy Zahn that started 5 years after Return of the Jedi. Basically centering around Leia & Han having kids and building of the New Republic and of course someone coming up to replace the Emperor. But many books have been writen in regards to what happens after Return of the Jedi. So the easiest way is to pick one and run with it.

I do believe that Lucas does not want to deal with making movies anymore. He is getting up there in years and is getting sick with what Hollywood is becoming. But I can see him in 5-10 years being begged to make sequels. The big question is whether he will allow someone to use him as a jumping point and create their own vision of Star Wars. Or will we always get him vetoing sequels because he doesn't like it.

Oh, by the way... hoping to see Star Wars tonight as I finally will have time, if I don't see it tonight I am screwed and will have to wait another week to see III.

Piney: "I will add that there has been a ton of books ok'd by Lucas to continue the Star Wars story."

The books have nothing to do with anything Lucas would use for a movie or a movie script. Lucas okays the books, but even he says that they have nothing to do with his Star Wars saga.

For example, 'Splinter of the Mind's Eye' was the first book after Star Wars. It came out before Empire. In it, Luke & Leia are romantically involved and plan to get married & start a family, and 'Dark Lords of the Sith' aren't evil Jedi. They're rich aristocrat cattle ranchers (or something).

Don't take anything from the book as having anything to do with the movies.
