Straight 6 with Dan "Boom" Herron

_____

Dan "Boom" Herron entered this off-season a little bit under the radar. While that sounds strange for someone with Herron's offer list (Akron, Boston College, Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota, and Purdue), he had to go the extra mile to attract interest from his original top two of Ohio State and Michigan. Spending a lot of time on the track and in the weight room, Herron bulked up to a solid 200 pounds before going on a serious camp run, convincing both Ohio State and Michigan that he was worthy of an offer. He ended the suspense early as he committed to Ohio State on July 10. With the recruiting chapter of his career closed, Herron has now turned his focus to the 2006 season. Despite an uncharacteristic 3-7 record for Warren Harding in 2005, Herron's goals are higher than ever as he is determined to lead the Raiders back to the playoffs and beyond. I recently spoke with Herron about these goals and more in "The Straight Six."

1) When you think of Ohio State football, what comes to mind?

DH: I immediately think of big time football and Eddie George.

2) What position would you prefer to play in college and why?

DH: Tailback because that's what I've played all my life. I'm going to work very hard to stay there at Ohio State.

3) This is your senior year...what goals have you set personally and for your team?

DH: I want to rush for 2000 yards and 31 touchdowns, win Mr. Football, and play in the U.S. Army All-American Game. For my team, I want to help us get back to the playoffs to make a run for the state championship. I know that we have the talent, so we just have to play hard.

4) When your career is over, how would you like people to remember Dan Herron?

DH: I want to be remembered as one of the best running backs of all time. Off the field, I want people to see me as a leader and positive role model.

5) If you were analyzing yourself on film, what would you list as your strengths and what needs some work?

DH: I have nice vision and I’m a powerful downhill runner, but I want to improve my blocking so that a can become a better, more complete back.

6) What are some of your favorite things to do away from football?

DH: I enjoy spending time with my family and eating.

those are some extremely lofty goals. I wish him luck.

seems like a very mature statement coming from such a young back. hopefully he realizes his goals this year and becomes a great player in the S&G!
