Stupid two point conversions (SimpLLLLLe Jim loves 'em, and so does James Franklin)

I think the second XP was a blown play... check out the video; they block for it just as if it were supposed to have been kicked.

Was that really a fake? I was fast forwarding from play to play by that time, and thought it looked like the holder fucked up, and made something from nothing. If that really was a fake, then that was a stupid way to do it.

Ok - I agree with you guys, now. My remembery of that play was that he had receivers and all kinds of other crap out there. Re-watching the play and it was just chaos that the holder did an awesome job of reacting to.

Had to bump this thread for the Boysee-Fresno game last night.

Fresno wins 41-40.

Boysee failed on TWO 2pt conversion attempts, one in the 2nd quarter and one in the 4th quarter.

The second quarter? There is never a reason to do it in the first half - zero, zip, nada.

Chris Peterson may be wishing he had taken some of those offers, as Boise seems to have peaked and is now on the decline. People finally forgot about the 2007 Fiesta Bowl and said "why the fuck would I go to Boise?"

Yeah he should have - at least to a school that would have a more natural recruiting ground.

The one in the 2nd quarter was fucktarded to the max. The one in the 4th quarter was slightly more understandable even though on it's own it cost them at least a tie and OT.

It isn't often that you see a team try two stupid two point conversions in the 3rd quarter but Kansas State did the trick today. Coupled with their use of 3 time outs the first 8 minutes after half time you seriously have to wonder if Bill Snyder is finally going senile.

Amazingly, the Cats have erased an 11 point halftime deficit in the process. Time will tell if those missed conversions (and squandered time outs) come back to bite them in the ass.

Especially against a team like Baylor where you have to figure that there are still a lot of points to be scored. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Baylor burns the 4th quarter clock down to just over a minute (K State was powerless to stop it) then scores a TD to go up 10 (instead of 8, thanks to the stupid 2 point attempts) and the Wildcats are toast.

Illinois goes for a stupid two point conversion twice in the same quarter versus the Buckeyes. They got the first one, opening the door to another poor decision which led to a fail and a 12 point (not 11) deficit.

To no one's surprise, Brian Griese was too stupid to comprehend the stupidity.

I disagree with this. Illinois was down 23 so with the TD pulled to 17. If they kick the XP there they're down 16 and need two TDs and two 2-pt conversions. Needing multiple 2-pt conversions I think the correct call is to go for those right away so that you can manage the quarter and clock aware of whether you're playing for two possessions or three. I mean, you've got to go for two multiple times, so if it's going to get snuffed once get it out of the way.

I could go either way with the first one. If my team was in that situation, I wouldn't get upset with the coach with either decision. But if the XP puts you to 11, you do that. I think you wait as long as possible to go for the 2-point conversions to keep the pressure on the other team as much as possible. And I agree that Brian Griese is a dingus. The way he was talking, Ohio State should just quit the rest of the season, because it's all over - no chance to win [Mark May].

I've heard that line of thinking before and I disagree with it. The notion that you "get it out of the way" and know if you need 2 or 3 possessions overlooks the fact that whether you need 2 or 3 possessions changes the way BOTH teams manage the clock, call plays, etc.. Going for 2 prematurely is great for the team in the lead, because if you fail they get a sigh of relief in knowing you need another possession to threaten them. Keep as much pressure on them as you can - Illinois' second attempt is a great example. Kicking the XP keeps the FG in play as an option should you get the ball back, down 11, and are faced with 4th and long in FG range. Going for 2 prematurely takes away that option, leaving you no choice but to go for 4th down. So instead of kicking a FG to make it a one score game, you get stopped on 4th down and you're still down 2 scores.

To suggest you would've had the same outcome on the 2 point play whether you did it earlier or later also overlooks the effect pressure has on players. Go for two only when you HAVE to go for two, not when some card tells you to do it, because your chances of failure are greater than kicking it.

That may be true but you are then placing all your marbels on a late game two point conversion. I would rather try it early, if you get it great. If you fail early at least you will know not to settle for a field goal on a later drive if the 2pt is no good.
