Subtle racism, ignorance, and stereotyping

I couldn't agree more.

The media says things that could be considered uninformed ALL THE TIME. But, since this time it involves a black man and a white man, you claim it's racist??? Holy fucking crap.

jesus christ. i never said it was INTENTIONALLY racist. there is a big difference. i don't consider the writer to be racist at all. but in my opinion, his assertion that troy and justin need to be melded into one player and that they should be rotated, is so ridiculous that the only explanation is unintentional stereotyping (he sees that the buckeyes have a qb "controversy". one qb is black and the other is white. because there is a "controversy", he assumes that they are equal. so, in his mind, that means that the black qb can do certain things better than others, and that the white qb is the exact inverse of the black qb; the yin to his yang).

i still maintain that if troy and justin were of the same skin color, the writer would have never wrote what he did. again, that doesn't make him racist at all. i'm just trying to illustrate an example of how people, especially uninformed ones, are quick to ignore evidence and simply rely on their preconceived notions. in this particular instance it happens to be race. in other instances it could be what college a player went to, for example. that wouldn't be racist, but it would still be ignorant and stereotypical.

This is racism
In case anyone cares...

Associated Press
<!-- template inline -->NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma head baseball coach Larry Cochell resigned Sunday, two days after reports surfaced of alleged racial remarks he made during two off-camera interviews to a sports network.

<!-- BEGIN INLINE UNIT -->
<!-- END INLINE UNIT -->The longtime coach submitted a letter of resignation to president David Boren, who had met hours before with athletic director Joe Castiglione and members of the university's black community on the matter.

Boren accepted the letter and said Castiglione has designated Sunny Golloway as interim head baseball coach for the rest of the season.

ESPN reported on Friday that before a telecast of the Oklahoma-Wichita State game on two of its networks on Tuesday, Cochell used racial epithets as he praised freshman outfielder Joe Dunigan, who is black.

The interviews were not taped, and the play-by-play announcer and analyst who conducted them didn't know Cochell had used similar language in both instances until they spoke with each other days later, an ESPN spokesman said.

The university, which didn't learn of the remarks until contacted Friday afternoon by ESPN, issued a statement that it was reviewing the matter and that Golloway would assume Cochell's duties on an interim basis. Cochell wasn't in the dugout during Oklahoma's Big 12 Conference series with Nebraska on Friday or Saturday.

Cochell, who led the Sooners to a 1994 College World Series victory, issued a statement apologizing for what he said and added that the remarks were not reflective of his own values.

He repeated that in his resignation letter.

"As I have said in a public statement, I deeply regret that I carelessly used language that is clearly contrary to the basic values of our university. Those words also created an impression contrary to my own personal values and my respect for all people," the letter released by the university read. "... I do not want to be the cause of any person having a mistaken impression about our university. Therefore I hereby request that I be allowed to resign as head baseball coach of the University of Oklahoma effective immediately."

In a statement, Boren said no one took any pleasure in what happened.

"A good and caring man has made a terrible mistake for which he must assume responsibility," Boren said.

Josh Krulewitz, director of media relations for ESPN, said the network initially reported on the story during a Friday evening broadcast, during which Cochell's remarks were shown in a graphic. The interviews weren't taped.

The commentators were unaware that Cochell had made similar remarks in their separate pre-broadcast interviews until they discussed it a few days later, Krulewitz said.

"Production management was notified of the comments, at which time we decided to report the story," he said.

In his statement, Cochell said he was honored to have been the caretaker of the OU baseball program, which he took over in 1991.

"I love and respect the University of Oklahoma," Cochell said. "There is not a university in the country that has done more to create a true sense of family based upon mutual respect."

Sorry. For that to be a racist comment is a pretty big reach. Perhaps you should wonder why you thought of race first, since the article certainly didnt.

If he respected all people as he wishes to assert, then that word would not be in his vocabulary. For God's sake Coach, you said it and you knew what you were saying. Don't try to play soft-hearted now...

Couple of points

1-The Smith/Zwick thing is not racial/racist in the least. For God sakes, you could replace the name Troy Smith w/ Steve Bellisari, and it wouldn't make the least bit of difference in the content of the article.

2-The Oklahoma thing is a completely different thing. IMO, you shouldn't even think the word "n*****" to describe a black person-it is wrong, regardless if people use Chris Rock to justify it. I can honestly say that when I watch the nightly body count/mayhem meter on the 11 o'clock news from the West Side of Dayton, I might think that the people on the screen are idiots, morons, thugs, etc., but the n-word does not register in my mind. There idiots of every color, there is no reason to single out black people for this epithet-or try to justify it.

I don't possibly see how any "racism" can be percieved from the article. But I think it would be naive to think that race hasn't come to the mind of many with regards to the TS/JZ debate. I honestly believe that there are some people that relate to Zwick more because he's white, and thus, are JZ people. And I'm sure the other way around. Not saying it's right, but realistically, I believe it's on people's minds.

I agree with some of you that he is looking for it too hard, but i also agree with trial when he questions what this guy sees in swick to suggest that if they were one they would be the perfect qb?

smith is a better passer better runner, smarter a bigger leader than swick. swick is like a bellasorry where every year we wait and are hopefull for something to happen but every year he sucks worst. i still don't understand how a div 1 Qb at a big time university throws a ball like that duck he throws??? most people learn how to throw a ball in pee wee league. i know he was our savior and wonder boy but i see absolutely no ability in that man, swick running the offense is like a car with no engine it ain't going no where.

Uh....that's "Zwick". I think Smith is the more dangerous QB, but we did pretty well with Zwick in the bowl game, too.

For some, this might be true, of course. But OSU has had black QBs for quite a while now, so I think for many it is much more the style of play and who gives us the best chance to win, as compared to the race issue. Unfortunately, race is the easiest charge to levy, so it gets brought into many discussions where it doesn't belong.

ESPN is doing what it can to get a coach fired? Wow, I'm shocked! Whoulda thunk it?

zwick has touch which is something smith has yet to master. smith throws one way and one way only. don't matter if it is a 60yrd bomb or a 5yrd dump off pass. he throws the ball as hard as he can every single time he throws it. that is one of the things ts needs to work on.
Not true at all. I'd say the best pass any buckeye qb threw last season (shit, maybe even in the last 4 seasons) was the touch pass Smith threw to Holmes over the top of Jackson down the right sideline for like 20 yds in The Game.

That writer is crazy. The only issue is Smith's trangression. Now if you could combine Smith's ability to play qb with Zwick's eligibility for the miami game ... that's a lot better combination.

So am I ignorant, stupid or both?

It is possible for two different people to look at the same thing (say this article for example) two different ways. You can pretend to be colorblind all you want but all of our views and opinions are colored by our experiences. Please don't be so close-minded that you need to bash anyone who disagrees with you because he sees something differently than you do. What pray-tell would make your opinion more valuable than someone else's?

You seem to think that someone who sees conclusions drawn from race alone in this article is saying, "That stupid racist whitey reporter needs to be fired for being such a racist cracker!" I don't think anyone even implied this. Perhaps you are the one reading too much into things.

Right, put some words into my mouth and then say I'm reading too much into things. Smooth. :roll1:

I will repeat it. There is no racism in the article. To find any, you have to make it up in your head and put it in there. To do such a thing is stupid and ignorant.

I sense racial undertones in this sentence. Exactly what are you implying by useing Smith, Zwick and master in one sentence? (sarcasm)

Its rediculous that this thread even exists. BTW, what happened to the general forum? Seems to have dissapeared.
