Air attack suspect was on terror list - Security- msnbc.com

ROMULUS, Mich. - A retired Nigerian banker said on Saturday he's meeting with security officials because he fears his son may have been the man who allegedly tried to bomb a U.S.-bound flight.

The suspect, identified as Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, 23, has for at least two years been on a list that includes people with known or suspected contact or ties to terrorists, an official briefed on the attack told The Associated Press....

...Meanwhile, new details of the thwarted attack emerged, with a law enforcement official telling NBC News that no air marshals were aboard the flight and that two passengers were being hailed as heroes: The first jumped on the suspect and was hospitalized with burns; the second put the suspect in a headlock.

The source said the suspect had been observed going to the bathroom and coming out looking agitated. He apparently had a pillow stuffed under his shirt or tucked under his beltline and was then seen injecting a fluid from a syringe into some unseen substance, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing.
Authorities later confirmed a powdered substance and other materials had been recovered and were being analyzed....

Seriously, how does someone even attempt to get on an international flight without a passport, and not end up in the sub-basement for a few days of questioning? My friend who has family in Nigeria told me one of his cousins thought she could extend her trip to the States by claiming the conference she was attending had been moved up a month. Her passport and visa were legit, and the conference was real, but had not been rescheduled. That little trick cost her over a month in a holding center. There are gonna be a few security workers in Amsterdam who's lives are about to reach a new level of suck.

I don't believe this story about getting on a plane without a passport. Security at Schiphol is pretty good. One of the world's busiest airports. I've seen people try to get on flights before without passports or travel documents and all were refused. These days, getting into the international departures hall requires a passport or travel document. He must have had some kind of travel document or somebody paid a chain of people off.

I flew out of there prior to 9/11 and there was no way I was getting on board without my passport. I gotta believe it is even tougher now, or at least it should be...

The System Worked!

Hey Jan hon, since the system is apparently based on passengers handling everything themselves...does that mean we can finally get rid of the hours long waits, strip searches by 7th grade educated cretins & the man eating dogs that always sniff my crotch?

Just imagine how bad it could've been had the terrorist had a pair of finger nail clippers on him.

There are plenty of security cameras recording in the major European airports. At minimum they would be able to get a freeze-frame or two of the well dressed companion alleged to have interceded on the Bomber's behalf. At best they may even see whether or not a passport was proffered - and also correlate with documents presented during the pre-flight screening interview routinely conducted at such facilities.

The bad guys are determined to kill. We need to take away their source of
jihadist. Bombing indiscriminately just creates more terrorists. Time for a smarter tactic. Feed people and educate them. (cheaper too!)

'Not supposed to' is just a phrase.

I wasn't supposed to carry on a backpack with a 6 inch hunting knife and 2 exacto knives, but I did. They were lodged down in the fold of the backpack, in the front no less, so I was oblivious to their presence until I got off the plane and reached my destination. This was 2 years after 9/11.

That's a very different matter from boarding without a passpost. Note that there is no such allegation reported by anyone else.
