Ted Ginn Sr. (official thread)

I wonder if TGA can become a magent or charter school and break away from the Cleveland Public Schools district? All it takes is money. It's either that or hope/pray for an about face from the Superintendent. Either way you cannot deny the good that has occured since TGA first opened their doors.

Ted Ginn, Sr. Helps At-Risk Youth at School and on the Football Field
By Jim Axelrod .

(CBS) For coach Ted Ginn Sr., history was moments away. His Glenville High School football team was the first from Cleveland ever to make it to the state championship.

His boys were leading with just minutes left when they gave up a touchdown, and got nipped by a point - enduring an emotional loss.

But the way Ted Ginn sees it, this was his biggest win yet, reports CBS News correspondent Jim Axelrod.

"The perception in the community was 'well, they didn't win a state title,'" he said. "But we did - because we went to a place nobody had ever been."

Taking kids where they've never been is Ginn's religion. This football coach at Glenville also runs a public school that bears his name - Ginn Academy. It's an alternative all-boys high school on Cleveland's hard luck Eastside. Some 290 of the city's toughest cases handpicked by Ginn and the school district. Nearly one third of them are from his Glenville football program.

"Do you have any kids who other schools would call 'the worst student' in school," Axlerod asked.

"Yes, probably 75 percent of them," Ginn replied.

Tressel, Ginn maintain relationship on high school, college and professional levels
By Robert Gartrell

Jim Tressel feared the worst when he received a phone message from San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary on Oct. 25. Singletary, who was with his team in London, wanted to talk about former Buckeye and current 49ers quarterback Troy Smith.

"He said it was regarding Troy, and as a parent, I'm like, ?Oh, what did Troy do?' because that's how you think as a parent," Tressel said. "So I called him back real quick, and it was good news."

The good news was that Smith would be starting against the Denver Broncos in place of injured quarterback Alex Smith. Singletary was simply gathering information about his new quarterback.

Smith is 3-2 as a starting wide receiver for the 49ers.

Conversations like that between Tressel and Singletary are not unlike the talks Tressel has with Ted Ginn Sr., who coached Smith at Cleveland's Glenville Academy.

Since Tressel was hired in 2001, 14 of Ginn's former players have played for Tressel at Ohio State. At least one Glenville player has committed to OSU every year since 2002, forming what has become known as the "Glenville pipeline."

But the connection between the two coaches started when Tressel was still coaching at Youngstown State University.

Ginn and Tressel met while attending meetings for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in 1997, where the two discovered that they shared a common vision for their programs.

"I always admired him and understood his work," Ginn said. "He took the leash off us at Youngstown State and made you great. He gave you a purpose and a reason to play football at Youngstown State, and I saw that early on."

The Glenville Tarblooders were hardly a power when Ginn became coach in 1997, as the school was struggling to subsist in one of the poorest areas in east Cleveland.

But the school's fortunes changed when Smith transferred there in 2001 and teamed up with future Buckeye and 49ers teammate Ted Ginn Jr., helping the school reach the state playoffs during his senior year.

Smith was the first Tarblooder to play for Tressel at OSU and was followed by a wave of others that included future NFL players Donte Whitner and Ginn Jr.

The two schools have since become linked with each other, and Ginn Sr. said the values he shares with Tressel made him comfortable forming that relationship.

Jim Tressel and Sam Rutigliano help honor Glenville coach Ted Ginn
Published: Saturday, August 27, 2011
By Branson Wright, The Plain Dealer

Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel says we should all pray for Glenville High School coach Ted Ginn.

And it wasn't because Ginn was hours away from opening the season against St. Edward at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Tressel wants area fans to pray and praise for what Ginn is and has been doing for children in the Glenville community for over 20 years.

Maybe Coach Ginn could ask Coach Tressel how to develop a kicking
game. How hard is it to find 1 kid to kick an extra point ? Glenville scores a td very late in the game last night to tie it at 14 with mighty St Ed. Rather than kicking the xp for the win, he goes for 2 doesn't convert, and loses in overtime.

Funny part is, Ginn attempted a 30 yd fg with 14 seconds left because he said he had confidence in his kicker. :bonk:

Scout$--Ginn Sr. Stands By Ohio State, Tressel

Sr. could not hold back his emotions upon returning to Ohio State. He says he will forever be loyal to Coach Tressel and says the same will remain for Coach Fickell.

Not every Glenville recruit has been the superstar (some have though) they or we would've liked but no one can deny the good that Ginn, Sr. has done for the youth of Cleveland AND for the The Ohio State Football program. Thanks Coach!

I'm perfectly happy with two top 10 talents and a Heisman winner out of there in recent years. Keep it up TGS!

recruiting is a crap shoot. fans love five star verbals because they only fail 50-60% of the time, while three stars do so 75% or more.

People wrongly inflate Glenville's failures because of the volume. People don't notice other schools because even the powerhouses only send a few per decade.

Glenville gave OSU:

1. Smith - best QB, Michigan killer in history who won the Heisman
2. Ginn - fastest player ever, best returner, top ten pick
3. Whitner - Stellar all American safety, top ten pick
4. Browning - Rock solid guard, capn, student during an OL slump. 4 year starter
5. Hines - Versatile athlete to flourish in new def position vs spread, 3 year starter
6. Bryant - talented true fresh contributor / starter at star & safety
7. Hall - should be a 3.5 yr starter by the time he graduates

Busts
1. Riley
2. Small
3. Rose
4. Newsome
5. Martin
6. Terry
7. Smith
8. O'Neal

That is a terrific hit rate, and I would submit that O'Neal and Terry were both assets to the team.

People raised questions about the pipeline while rose and small struggled yet quietly Browning and Hines turned out to be more than just good signees but major contributors for four years with Bryant continuing that trend.

Not to mention Devan Bogard was one of if not the only Ohioan with options that verballed to OSU during the scandal.

Glenville's Ted Ginn Sr. 'working through' reasons for missing game on Saturday

Bob Fortuna, The Plain Dealer, September 25, 2011

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Glenville football coach Ted Ginn Sr. did not coach the Tarblooders in their game Saturday and his status beyond this week's crucial game against St. Ignatius is uncertain.

"It's personal,'' Ginn said regarding his absence from Saturday's 69-0 Senate Athletic League win over Collinwood. "I've got some things going on right now that I'm working through.''

Ginn, who also missed some practices last week, declined to elaborate. The staff is splitting up the coaching duties in his absence.

"I talk to the referees before the start of the game when Coach Ginn isn't there,'' said offensive coordinator Tony Overton. "As far as game-situation calls and dealing with the daily duties of the program when Coach Ginn isn't there, the entire staff works together.''

The timing couldn't have come at a worse time, since Saturday's game will be the last nonleague game for the Tarblooders, who after an 0-2 start, entered the weekend 19th in the Division I, Region 1 computer rankings. The top eight teams in each region qualify for the postseason.

Glenville (2-2) will play league games the last four weeks of the regular season, putting its string of eight consecutive postseason appearances in jeopardy. St. Ignatius stands 4-1 midway through the regular season.

"I don't know how many practices I'll be at this week but I do plan on coaching against Ignatius,'' said Ginn.

And what about after Saturday's game and the near future?

"We're just taking it one day at a time,'' Overton said.

Glenville football coach Ted Ginn Sr. unsure if he will coach Saturday vs. St. Ignatius
Bob Fortuna, The Plain Dealer, September 30, 2011

CLEVELAND, Ohio - It's one of the biggest high school football games of the year, but when Glenville runs onto the Byers Field turf Saturday night to play St. Ignatius, its leader might not be on the sidelines.

Tarblooders coach Ted Ginn Sr. said Friday he is unsure whether he will coach Saturday. Ginn has missed the team's practices this week as he deals with an undisclosed private issue.

"It's personal," Ginn said earlier this week. "I've got some things right now I'm working through."

Ginn did not coach in last week's Senate Athletic League victory over Collinwood. The Tarblooders (2-2) face a must win Saturday to keep their playoff hopes alive after an 0-2 nonleague start. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

"Coach Ginn will talk when he's ready," said Tony Overton, Glenville's offensive coordinator and Ginn's right-hand man. "So far, he hasn't said anything to me, the other coaches or the players."

Glenville senior V'Angelo Bentley is happy with the way Overton and the staff has kept the team focused on St. Ignatius (4-1) this week.

"Practices have felt a little different though because it's coach Ginn and he's a big figure on the field and the community," Bentley said.

Added senior Willie Henry, "When the general is down, his troops are down. Coach Ginn is down but we know, God willing, he will be back again."

His son, 49ers player Ted Ginn Jr., declined to elaborate on his father's absence earlier this week.

"The one thing [dad] taught me is how to persevere through things," Ginn Jr. said from Youngstown this week as the 49ers prepare for Sunday's game at Philadelphia. "He's going to work as hard as he can to get back on his feet."

Donte Whitner, a former Glenville player and first-year safety for the 49ers, said Ginn Sr. makes an impact whether he's on the sidelines or not.

"If he decides not to coach or can't coach for a while, it's a big hit for Glenville, but I believe he'll always be a major influence on not just what goes on at Glenville but what college coaches come to Cleveland for."
