The 2016 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships are played at the same venue as the NCAA Women’s Championships last week; Eugene Country Club in Eugene, OR. The course will play to 7,014 yards and a par of 70. It has a rating of 74.2 and a slope of 136. By contrast, my “home” course plays to 6,638 yards, a par of 72, a rating of 72.0 and a slope of 123. The Eugene CC is one of the tougher courses the men will play this season; if you watched any of the NCAA Women’s Championship, you’d have seen a lot of trees.

How’d He Do?

Tee-k did fairly well in the opening round. He did even better in the 2nd round. His even par (70) round moved him up 9 positions to T-24th. He blended 4 birdies / 4 bogeys with his 14 pars to get into better position to advance after Sunday’s 3rd round.

Tee-k began his round on the back 9 (hole #10) and his first couple hours were a struggle; he was +3 to par after 8 holes and needed to turn things around. He birdied his 9th hole (#18) and an hour later birdied the 528 yard par-5 4th hole to move to +1 for the round. He overcame a bogey on his 16th hole (#7) by birdieing his final two holes to get his round back to even par and +1 after two rounds. Strong finishes to both front and back 9’s may be what gets Tee-k into the final round on Monday.

What’s it Mean?

Tee-k is still in the hunt. He ended the second round in 2nd place of those who are participating as individuals. For Tee-k to advance to the Championship round, he has to be one of the top nine players not on a team that is advancing. Got it?

Entering the 3rd round, there are 23 players doing better than Tee-k and 11 players doing as well. Of these 34 players, 27 of them are on teams that have potential to advance. With those seven players and Tee-k in 2nd position of Individuals, he’s at the cut line to advance. He needs a relatively (better than a dozen or so other players) to have a chance to advance. Of course, as the 3rd round gets underway, some of the teams at the borderline will shift, so we won’t have the exact picture until Sunday evening. This is nerve-wracking stuff.

Tee-k had another pretty clean round with 4 birdies / 4 bogeys. This is his 2nd consecutive round in Eugene where he shot nothing higher than a bogey, and not many of those… He is positioning himself round. He needs another clean round with a few birdies sprinkled in. Very doable for him.

Next up; Round 3

Go Buckeyes! Go Tee-k!
