Teen Sues Over Confederate Flag Dress

The rebel flag is going the way of the swastika in terms of being on the edge of the envelope.

I'm always very leery of how we go about suppressing unpopular speech/opinions.

Person to person is one thing. The problem is when the government starts legislating it.
Except it is still part of the State Flag of Mississippi, no? A public university wore it on their uniform at one time while referring to themselves as “the Rebels”. I see what you are saying, but the damn thing is intertwined with the government.

Ok, it's a goddamned Monday and I'm in a mood

They piss and moan all the time about how the Union army devastated them. I'm mostly reminded about Sherman. But you know what? The U.S. bombed Germany back to the Stone Age. Bombing Dresden was a fucking war crime. But do you hear Germans saying "fuck Roosevelt"? or call WWII "The War of American Aggression"? Nope, they manned up, took the goddamned blame and moved on. But not the south. It's really hard for me to have any empathy for them.

No doubt it will take some thought on how to untangle the mess down south. IMO, governments at any level can't be (or at least shouldn't be) forcing religion or "heritage" down anyone's throat.

Governments are supposed to be serving the people, not the other way around. If a large majority of the people find a flag to be offensive then the government should be in tune with that and listen.

Of course we all know the government is broken and doesn't serve the people anymore (and likely hasn't in quite sometime). Hopefully that larger context starts to be how these issues are framed growing forward and we can add it to the list of positives that could, potentially, come out of these painful times.

Agree on being leery of the cancel culture and suppression. Especially by the government.

The problem with rebel flag supporters who also claim to be patriotic is the subtle fact that the confederates actually were very Un-American to the point that they wanted to break away and form their own nation.
Right. They are enemy combatants. A real good reason why they shouldn't have ever been allowed statues of their enemy combatant generals to be raised on American soil. Wars have consequences and the losers don't get to make the rules.

All that said, I do agree with what Jax said above. If we look at it as a speech issue: sure, you (that's the royal you, not Jax) have the right to announce your racism/redneck idiocy through the cunning use of laundry. Knock yourself out.

I liked this because you agreed with me. I really didn’t read it.

Thanks to the Marshall plan that replaced all their factories etc and put our businesses especially steel at a competitive disadvantage. Gifts of billions.

Not to mention we fire-bombed Tokyo until it was one big cinder and then proceeded to dropped the only two nuclear weapons ever used against a people, and after that we occupied and essentially ruled their country for several decades. Guess what, the Japanese modeled a lot of their industry and lifestyle after America. No "get the fuck outta here, Yankee1" (well, aside from Okinawa, seeing as half that island is covered in USMC camps and young jar heads regularly tear up the place).

Not all that hard to change the state flag, or to change the name of a school's mascot.
