Texas Longhorns (big hat, no cattle; please don’t Horns Down us)

Save a spot for post-saban bama. That fall could be amazing to watch if they flub the next hire.

Nah, too much talent and institutional/alumni commitment down there to really crater for long. They'll decline, but they'll keep burning through bad hires until they get the right guy. Even if it takes 3-4 tries, they'll have somebody good again within 7-10 years at most.

eh, look at what they had before Saban.

Those fuckers were losing to mid majors less than 15 years ago

True. They also won a couple titles in the 90s. Bama is as blue blood as it gets.

Pretty big swings though

To me elite = consistent

OSU had a brief period of being a regional power, that's about as bad as it ever got (or will get, Woody willing)

meanwhile, other so called blue bloods hit patches where they are losing to the Appy State's of the world (ok, not really. Only one team has ever lost to Appy state but you know what I mean).

Well, you and I can have different definitions and that’s just fine. From my perspective, I saw Bama be pretty mediocre, but I also saw them win titles while we were still pining for 1968. Nobody here likes Bama, me included, but it’s hard to argue against their pedigree.

No doubt, their highs have been higher. No one can reasonably argue otherwise but their lows have been much lower.

It's just an interesting topic.

Drives me fucking crazy. Bama can bungle things and be crap for a decade or so (Mike Price, Doug DuBose, Mike Shula, etc.) and as soon as they get good again they win a natty or two (or in their current run 5). Ohio State sustains excellence over time like nobody else and cashes their opportunities in far less frequently. 'Bama only got one natty in the 1990s though (1992) and none in the 1980s (after repeating in 1978 and 1979).

Ohio State consistency is pretty remarkable. The interim year was bad and we had a couple lean years in Coop’s time, but somehow the lows have been remarkably stable.

I will say that, as much as I respect Coach Bruce, I really felt that the program was on the verge of excepting mediocrity at the end of his tenure. I know your feelings on Cooper, and most of it is well deserved but after a rough patch he really changed the program and the expectations. There was one enormous thing he lacked, and JT came in and fixed that one thing. And magically, we won a title because he fixed that. What has happened since 2001 is absurd.

And even with the absurdity, only two nattys (which don't get me wrong is great) but 2003 (Goddammit Mo C)
In the past 20 years Michigan has had more AP top-ten final rankings (4) than Notre Dame (3). USC has had 9.

I'll concede that I'd skipped over USC: They're just on temporary hiatus and will rebound with a vengeance at some point and don't really belong on the list. But ND also played for a natty in 2012. When Xichigan plays for a BIG championship, maybe I'll consider them more relevant in the national conversation than ND.

Yeah folks point to 2003 and 2015 but it’s pretty fucking hard to repeat. Even with same players, you just rarely have same mojo (passion). I’d say that 2903 and 2015 were never likely to happen because of that.
The ones that truly got away, were 1995, 1996, and 1998.....and to a lesser extent maybe 2006 or 2010.
