INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA's board of directors approved a ban Thursday to eliminate all text messages from colleges coaches to recruits beginning in August, then left open the possibility of revisiting that legislation as early as 2008.
"One of the abuses that was described to us were text messages from a coach to a player saying, 'Call me,' " Division I vice president David Berst said on a conference call.
A recruit still could message a college coach, although the coach could not respond under the new rule.

WOW... That's huge... This will have a big effect nationwide...
NCAA coaches are resourceful creatures though... They'll just find some other way to do things...

Although Pryor would like to see the new rule modified, even he admits the text messages can be annoying. One day, he got a text message from every member of one college coaching staff. He wouldn't reveal the staff, but said their school will not be one he considers.

I wonder what staff it was? :wink2: Especially after the "rumor" Wad posted.

It is times like these where guys like Brewster, and the other recruits as well, are so important... when the staff cannot directly speak to these kids.

Coaches will rely more on recruits for sure...every update you read now for a high-profile prospect usually includes comments about what other recruits they have talked to...Proyr -> Brewster...McGuffie -> Wilson...Pocic -> Sands...etc.

Scout $ by Adam Jardy

Thoughts from the coaches in the Big Ten on the texting ban...all seem to think it should be allowed to some extent. If you have access to Scout, it is worth reading due to the hilarious quote from Zook about getting around the rules (quite typical).

I can certainly understand the ruling by the NCAA because I'm sure it could be overwhelming at times. However, it seems like a modified/limited approach would be better, rather than banning it altogether.

For example, only one coach per school can send a text message, and it can only be once a week. To limit even more, a HS student/athlete could select his top five schools, and only those on his contact list, are allowed to text message.

Oh well....

Gotta love Zook. He's the type of guy who would release spoilers of the Harry Potter book before it came out.

Toledo coach Tom Amstutz, in Pittsburgh recently for Joe Butler's Metro Index Camp for high school players, said he uses text messages some, but not as much as his assistant coaches. He understands the new rule. "I think it got to the point where the text messaging was overdone," Amstutz said. "People were sending text messages in classes and during ridiculous hours. I think what should maybe happen is evaluate it over a year, come back and figure out a reasonable time and reasonable amount of text messages. ... I think there's a way to make sure we keep it civilized and done in an orderly fashion."

Coach Amstutz is from my Alma Mater. He has had his share of success with recruits but he knows that TMs in class is a total distraction. We need to keep these kids focused to keep their grades up. I like his idea of studying the problem, but how about just putting a limit on them and have the phone service roll them over to the next month if they don't hit the limit. Everyone gets the same amount just at different times. The Sweats and Pryors might get some studying done too!
