Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

Dean Smith went through the same thing with every sub-par or rebuilding year he had at Carolina. Only after he finally won a title in '82 did the bitching stop.

Having lived through Eldon Miller (mediocrity personified), Gary Williams (viewed the job as a stepping stone to the ACC) The Fredoite (worst Ohio State coach ever) and Jim O'Brien (cheater), I don't ever want Matta to go anywhere. We won't do better. That being said, I understand a little bit of frustration until Ohio State can finally close the deal one year.

While I would love to have a national championship in my pocket, I would not trade Matta for any of the coaches named above. He is pure class and expects the same from his players. Quite a few of those other guys draw too much attention to themselves for my liking.

I'm neither bitching nor frustrated, and Thad Matta's the man I want directing the Buckeye hoop program for as long as he wants to be here. That said, he's not yet at the level of the guys I mentioned above. Not saying he won't be, but like Parcells says, you are what your record is - and till he wins the NC he won't be at the level those others have reached.

It's not an excuse to be a fickle fan when the team is "only" 18th in the country. I'm not calling you one, but your post seems to attempt to defend such fans. In that sense, I'm not buying it.

There is a certain amount of pressure or scrutiny....unfair or not....that comes from building a program up to a level where we are literally knocking on the door. Thad's trajectory has been steep. We had all the pieces in 2007, 2010 and 2011 but came up short. The sample size isn't insignificant.

Billy Donovan and Bill Self have set an almost unfair precedent for great young coaches. Thad, Crean, Miller, Thompson are those guys needing to win a NC to be in their class. Many fans believe Thad is in their class already....I think he is close. But the nation doesn't view him as there yet. The nation grows impatient and moves on to fresh meat. I think it will hurt Thad and OSU to not be considered a growing program.

You all should just ignore Davey when it comes to discussing Matta. No points that he makes actually make sense. Not a growing program? I guess "growing" the number of NCAA appearances, Big Ten titles, Sweet 16s/F4s, and NBA draft picks is worthless after all. Matta should be paid in peanuts.
