Almost every season is going to end with a disappointing loss, but what a great four-year run it's been for Matta's teams:

123 wins, 30.75 per (82% wins)
NCAA tourney 11-4
B1G tourney 11-1

Looking forward to another fun one next year.
Thanks Coach!

Ohio Coach of the Year

The public might watch Ohio State men?s basketball coach Thad Matta sweat, yell and go through other histrionics on the sideline during games and assume he is the impatient sort with a low boiling point.

But what fans did not see this past season was how Matta, behind closed doors and one day at a time, carefully molded a young, struggling team into one that fell one win short of the Final Four.

During the stretch run in the Big Ten schedule, the Buckeyes fell in line behind their coach to win their final five regular-season games to finish one game behind champion Indiana, then won three games to claim the conference tournament championship and another three in the NCAA Tournament to reach the Elite Eight before a 70-66 loss to Wichita State.

Coaches in the state were impressed enough to select Matta as The Dispatch Ohio College Basketball Coach of the Year.

Point guard Aaron Craft saw how Matta turned players who seemed to be a bunch of square pegs not fitting into round holes into a group that finished 29-8.

When asked to name the top five players he’s ever coached, Matta quickly responded with Jared Sullinger, Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr. and Evan Turner. Matta struggled with the fifth, but he threw out names he’d consider, such as Aaron Craft, Jon Diebler, Je’Kel Foster and David Lighty. Matta also mentioned David West, a former national player of the year he coached while leading the Xavier basketball program.

Matta was asked about his personal health, and he said he hasn’t been this energized for a season in a long time. Though Matta had an office chair on the floor for when he starts having back pain, he walked throughout the practice without needed to use it. At the end of his response regarding his health, Matta joked, “But haven’t lost yet.”
