Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

It was such a pleasure to watch his intensity coaching against Iowa. Just magic.
Well I certainly agree here, and I would like some of that intensity, flow over into Amir Williams. Amir looks like a really good kid, but only if somehow, someone could light a fire within in his character. Last night, I think we were beginning to see a little change in his playing style. And I truly think Thad Matta is beginning to show him what Intensity is all about.

7th time in 10 years Coach Matta has won at least 25 games. This is probably his most impressive 25 win season too. If we had Tom Crean we'd be 16-17.
Yeah. A lot of people don't seem to think Matta is an elite coach. If the only prerequisite for "elite" is national championships, then it's a pretty slim field. I don't think people realize what a remarkable job he's done. He took over a program in disarray with a pretty middling profile since the Lucas/Havlicek days and taken them to 8 tournament appearances, 5 sweet-16, 3 elite-8, and 2 final fours in 9+ years. He's had tOSU in national title contender discussion in 5/10 seasons here. He has won at least 20 games every year. He's won 25 seven times. 30 three times, and 29 two others. He's recruited like nobody has here in the modern era. All of that at a "football school" is quite an achievement. We're blessed to have him for as long as he wants to stick around.

Looking back at the first post in this thread is pretty funny now. I remember that whole saga like it was yesterday.

Re: 3-Time Big Ten Coach of the Year

I do think he is an "elite coach" as his record speaks for itself. However, this year (2013-2014) for the most part the team has been inconsistent and "under achieving". Needless to say, he is not in contention for a 4th Big Ten Coach of the Year Award this season.

Is it really underachieving? It's not an especially talented roster. Nobody can shoot with any consistency, and Q is the only relatively consistent scorer. I'd say leading this roster of misfit toys to a 25-8 record is a pretty damn solid job. Probably one of Thad's best in the grand scheme of things. I'd argue Indiana's roster is more talented, but they're just 17-15 and probably heading to the NIT.

I agree, this is his best 25-win coaching job. I am amazed that he has gotten this team to 25 wins this season. They have two guys in the top-50 in terms of points per 40 minutes in the Big Ten, less than every other team in the league, and that is a clear sign of a lack of talent.

Of course, you could also blame him for some poor recruiting decisions (at least in terms of not offering certain players that could've helped the team) to get to this rather talent-inferior team, but I know he's trying to shoot for the stars and that means planning for the big picture and using the scholarships to only get players of a certain quality. The fact that he's been able to get this team to 25 wins and a 5 or 6 seed in the tourney in a year that the fans just hope ends ASAP is remarkable.

In the B1G basketball thread, there was some disagreement by my mentioning this year's team winning 25 games. There was disappointment with the comparison to Fred Taylor, arguably the #2 coach of his era behind Rupp of Kentucky (who is alleged to have played the game by SEC rules).

I want to be clear that I did not intend to cast aspersions about Fred Taylor, who was a friend of our family. I referred to the time since he was Ohio State coach and I believe he remains the premier Ohio State coach in history.

I agree with the assertions that Ohio State played a weak OOC schedule this year and that the Buckeyes play more games now than then. I think that the quality of the OOC that Coach Taylor faced was streets ahead of the one we saw this year.

That said, anyone who thinks that this team is a failure really has to rethink that point. They remain a Top 25 team in just about any poll or power rating of consequence, despite being in a rebuilding year. That sure as hell was not the case under Matta's predecessors after Taylor. It is also fair to say that, even when Coach Taylor strode the sidelines, the Big Ten was not a juggernaut of a basketball conference then as it is now.

My point, quite frankly, is to stop the bloody whining and recognize what we have. Coach Matta isn't going to be here forever and his successor is going to find his record a tough act to follow.

Poor Coach Matta does not know what is going to do today
INDIANAPOLIS – Here’s a question you couldn't have asked Thad Matta after the Big Ten Tournament semifinals each of the last five years: What are your plans for Selection Sunday?

Ohio State has been so successful in this tournament for so long, it never had to worry about anything other than finding a TV in the locker room after the final to find out its NCAA Tournament fate.

Ohio State heads home early: A new Selection Sunday plan, a new NCAA Tournament outlook
"I expect the pain we're feeling to carry over to the next game and to take it out on the next opponent ... Bad enough for them, whoever they are, I feel sorry for them," senior Lenzelle Smith Jr. said. [URL='http://cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2014/03/ohio_state_buckeyes_big_ten_to.html']Read more »
