Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

Your emotions are no excuse. Don't worry, soon you'll get your wish as Thad can't coach for long in his current state. Then you'll find out what happens when one of the other 300 coaches takes over. (hint: it's a bad thing at a football school where the fans somewhat pay attention to final four bound teams)

Frankly Scott has been getting wide open and frequently taken shots all year thanks to Russell. He just isn't good at shooting, like his entire class.

Thompson has had tons of great looks too. He misses them constantly.

What can be coached is defense and they've done a phenomenal job for most of Matta's tenure. The last two years were a rare departure from that and they still had a number of stingy defenders, just not entire lineups of them like before. They have a nice influx of young scorers in DAR, Tate, Williams and Loving (pre suspension). Unfortunately they are not a typical Matta bunch when it comes to defense. DAR and Tate are improving though.

Matta missed on this class. It happens. If he nails that class they probably do more than play for one final four during their time here.

As for Amir, my dad is a spartan alum and watches a lot of our games too. He often mentioned that his struggles reminded him of the Sparty big men for years until Payne. Frankly until last year, Sparty went through a very long stretch where the majority of their top recruits plateaued or got worse over the course of their careers.

It's a tricky thing coaching up top recruits. There's almost no room for credit for the coach from certain people. Because Conley possesses so many skills, Thad gets no credit for his offensive transformation. When a guy like Sullinger or Oden arrives with so much elite talent and dominance, the baseline for what should happen is “mostly dominant" to many. That sets up Thad for almost certain failure or at most, satisfactory coaching.

~30 wins a year? Are you watching the same team that I am? The only head coach in CBB that gets less out of more is Dave Rice.

Showcasing talent? Evan Turner? Sullinger? Deshaun Thomas? His only recruit that has done anything of note is Conley, and that kid was an afterthought to him showcasing Oden.

Russell is a lottery pick. That has ZERO to do with Matta's coaching ability. What happened to Shannon Scott? Oh yeah, Matta showcasing Russell ruined Scott's season to the detriment of the team, not to mention Amir being Amir. Why? Because Amir isn't being showcased, and therefore he hasn't been coached up one lick in his career.

Showcasing talent is cool. WINNING trumps all that.

Sorry for the rant. I'm annoyed. Getting blown out at home sucks, especially when you have supposedly out recruited the Badgers like 80% of the time. Bo Ryan coaches circles around Matta.

Fuck.

Obviously you know nothing about basketball recruiting or basketball itself so I am not going to waste my time trying to explain it to you.

This. Enjoy Matta while he's here. Take the good with the bad. Because when Thad leaves, there's a very strong chance tOSU floats back to the middle of the pack (or lower), unless they can find another top coach in their back yard willing to coach at a football school.

When our "down years" are still netting us 22-25 wins and tourney appearances, we're in pretty good shape. It's not all that long ago that this program struggled to sniff .500...

Coaches get fired at OSU for struggling to sniff .500 for anything approaching a regular basis, let's not kid ourselves about where the normal level of the program is. Matta is great but he isn't the only coach who can win at OSU.

Which was a mile away from the drivel that was stated above: "The only head coach in CBB that gets less out of more is Dave Rice." That's article comment level nonsense.

As for your more rationale synopsis of the position, sure, you could get very lucky and replace him with a good to great bench coach with mediocre to average recruiting ability. To quote Lloyd: possible, maybe not probable. I don't like that coach's chances of matching Matta's consistent success and definitely would not count on multiple final four runs.

It's even more unlikely that you could replace thad with someone that recruits this well AND offers great coaching. He is unlikely to look at a football school like OSU and even if you beat outlandish odds and got him to coach at OSU, he's probably not here very long.

which sounds nice until you look and realize Matta is the only one that has consistently won at Ohio State in 50 years....
Not exactly. O'Brien had them in 4 straight tourneys, between a 3 and 5 seed every year I believe. And he was a mediocre recruiter, which showed up in tournament results most of the time. I believe many coaches could get OSU to be a tourney team regularly, it is having a team that can go deep in the tournament that is hard to build at OSU for most coaches.

And he had exactly one year that was anywhere what Matta has done basically since year 1....we won't even get into his recruiting issues.

Ohio State is a football school. It takes a special coach to do what Matta has done here and make it an expectation, not a surprise.

Well Matta has had 5 S16s in 10 years, so basically half the time his teams have been much better than the average year and the other half have been basically average good teams although his first two were heavily influenced by O'Brien's recruiting.
