The 2023 Spring Game, Sat. 4/15, 12pm EST, BTN

Excited for the new faces to get in and earn their stripes. Mostly the Oline and QBs because I think the other positions are going to be great by mid season.

Knowles has the ingredients over there to have the best D in the country so he better make a big ol' improvement and I think he will.

OHIO STATE’S 2023 SPRING GAME WILL BE OFFENSE VS. DEFENSE SCRIMMAGE WITH MODIFIED SCORING SYSTEM, MOSTLY LIVE TACKLING

Ohio State will use the same format for its 2023 spring game as it did in 2022.

Much like it did a year ago, Ohio State’s 2023 spring game will function as an offense vs. defense scrimmage, with the offense representing the Scarlet team and the defense representing the Gray. Instead of a traditional game in which teams alternate possessions, the Scarlet team will always be on offense while the Gray team will always be on defense.

While scoring for the Scarlet team will be traditional, the defense will receive points for takeaways (three points), three-and-outs (three points), sacks (two points) and forced punts (one point) in addition to six points for any defensive touchdowns.

Quarterbacks will wear black non-contact jerseys and will not be tackled, but the rest of the game will be live tackling with the exception of the first couple of series for the first-team units, where plays will be whistled dead after a “thud.” That will allow the Buckeyes to be cautious with players like running back Miyan Williams, who Ryan Day said Wednesday is among those who will only be available for the thud drives before the Buckeyes begin tackling.

  • Day said he is excited for Ohio State to play in the spring game on Saturday after what he thinks has been a great spring for the Buckeyes. "It should be a good turnout and a good opportunity for our guys to play in front of a good crowd."
  • Day said Devin Brown had "a procedure" on his hand that will keep him from playing the spring game on Saturday. Day said Brown will be able to throw "real soon" and should be able to continue his development later in the spring, summer and fall.
  • Day said "we'll keep building, keep growing, either way" regardless of how long it takes Brown to get healthy. He expects Kyle McCord, Tristan Gebbia, Chad Ray and Mason Maggs to step up in Brown's absence and trusts them to develop on their own and help their teammates develop as they lead the offense in practices.
  • Day on Kyle McCord and Devin Brown: "They've both done really good things, but there are things they both have to improve on." He added that McCord and Brown have both had good practices this spring, and he hopes both can continue to battle each time they have the opportunity. "One day one guy has the upper hand, the other day the other guy might have the upper hand."
  • On comparisons of Brown's injury to Joe Burrow's in 2017, Day said Burrow's injury came in the fall, and that set him back during the season, while Brown's injury has come in the spring. "This one is different. Devin has been practicing a lot this spring."
  • Day said he is not ready to name a starter at right tackle, but he looks forward to seeing players like Zen Michalski and Tegra Tshabola compete in the spring game. As for left tackle, he feels similarly about Josh Fryar at the spot, saying Fryar "has the ability" to lock down the spot but needs to keep stacking days this spring to have a firm grasp over the starting role.
  • Day said Miyan Williams will play the first couple of drives in the spring game, which will likely be "the thud drives." He said Williams has dealt with some injury-related issues in the offseason but it is nothing "long term" or anything that has caused the coaching staff to be concerned.
  • Day said Ohio State's safeties have been "solid" this spring. He noted Josh Proctor, Lathan Ransom, Cameron Martinez, Kye Stokes and Sonny Styles as players he's had an eye on this offseason. Day also mentioned that Ja"Had Carter had a good spring up until his injury – one he is unsure whether or not it will cause Carter to miss the spring game on Saturday.
  • Day said he believes in recruiting momentum and the culture Ohio State has currently regarding the kind of players the Buckeyes have recruited and landed recently. "We are getting some of the best players in the country to jump on board right now."
  • Day said Ohio State has had "great energy" in its spring practices, but he wants to see that energy sustain for an entire practice from start to finish, as that will be what is required of the Buckeyes' players when they reach the start of the 2023 season.
  • Day said Ohio State's message this offseason has still been "Fight," and its motto has been "Tough Love." He also said the coaching staff has been focusing on winner-loser scenarios that they hope will breed a competitive environment within the team, leading to an increased desire for toughness. "We motivate through love... There is nothing more powerful or sustainable than love."
  • Day said he's "been trying to stay in the middle of the field" and have a hands-off, CEO-like approach to coaching his team this spring. However, he says "it's been hard" for him to do that as he has always been more of a hands-on coach since he entered the profession.
  • Day said Jelani Thurman has "a lot of potential" and thinks the freshman tight end has embraced all aspects of what it means to be a tight end in Ohio State's offense. "He has a lot of people he can look up to there to learn how to do it." Day claimed Thurman may be "the most talented player" for his age that he's seen since he took over as head coach of the Buckeyes in 2019.
  • Day said Gebbia has incredible "maturity" and "his approach in the meeting rooms" has been what stands out most about the Oregon State transfer. Despite Brown's procedure, Day feels confident that the quarterback room will be in good hands with McCord, Gebbia, Ray and Maggs for the rest of the spring and will continue to get better when Lincoln Kienholz arrives in the summer.
  • Day said Ohio State's position battles will come down to mental toughness. He believes every player – regardless of position – has the talent to start for the Buckeyes. However, the battles will come down to who can prove that talent with each opportunity, which he believes ultimately comes down to a mental approach more than a physical one.
  • Day said he "will be on the headset" for the spring game. He expects to call some plays for the offense but also let Brian Hartline take the lead at times. Day said he and Hartline are still working on the best plan for how to handle that and will probably continue working on it until Saturday.

Ohio State football: Ryan Day breaks down QB competition, what to expect from Buckeyes spring game

"We would've liked to have done it at the end of spring," Day said on when he would've liked a starter to be named. "It's been too close of a competition. A lot of good days on both sides. So that will continue through the summer."

Really looking forward to the spring game. It is a bit of a glorified scrimmage and there is not a ton that can be gleaned from it, but it is Buckeye football baby. And the spring game is just always fun to me to see some new faces emerge.

Specifically, I am looking forward to:

- Seeing how the OTs handle our DEs. Fryar, Tshabola, Fitzpatrick and Zen are all going to have their hands full, but curious to see how they respond.
- On the flipside of the first point, really excited to see Kenyatta Jackson and Abor out there, along with Curry but he flashed enough last year for me to know he is going to be a stud. Sounds like Kenyatta is the one really standing out.
- The more obvious one is how McCord plays and we got deprived of the battle with Brown, who looked awesome in the spring game last year. I think Kyle wins the job but a big spring game would help get him there.
- Carnell Tate is definitely exciting to see play live, he has been tearing up in spring practice and he should get plenty of reps out there. Also very curious to see the '22 WR class and how they play, especially Brown and Antwi. I would imagine (or hope) MH Jr and Egbuka play very little to give the other WRs solid reps.
- Another frosh I am excited to see is Thurman at TE. Already lost his stripe and is a specimen.
- At defensive back, ready to see what Davison and Carter (transfers) have. Styles is another one to watch, who might earn himself a job. Also would love to see CSH or Mathews out there (frosh CBs that both look very promising), I forget which one enrolled early and which one is coming in the summer though.
- At DT, Kanu is one I am very intrigued on. Hopefully he has put on some good weight and improved his technique, we didn't really need him last year but this year I think we will.
- CJ Hicks, aka Captain Buckeye. Typically LBs really don't get much of a chance to shine in this game though, which is why it is at the bottom of the list. I think this kid is the next Buckeye great LB.

Really just looking forward to not taking the Bucks seriously and enjoying the game. I love spring games.... get to just watch football and not care who wins lol

Few things I'm looking for.

1. See how sharp (or not) Kyle is. It'd be nice if Kyle showed a little command and made a few big throws. If there's a ton of check downs or flat passes that'd not be ideal that's for sure.

2. The OTs in pass pro. I think the only thing that could hold us back in 2023 is if our Oline isn't good enough. If we can give whoever our QB is just a little time we'll be really good considering our skill.

3. Excited to see Hayden even though he probably doesn't get too much opportunities tomorrow. He's a good 13 pounds heavier and IMO that extra size might make him our top back. His vision was stated as his best feature and really that's what you need most as a RB. What good is breakaway speed if you miss the cutback etc. I think Hayden is better than all the backs but we'll see.

4. The secondary. I love the DL and the LBS but the secondary was always the concern this year after a bad ending to 2022. Well I think this years backend is really good. No offense to Brown or Hickman but they're not Hancock/Igbinosum or Styles/Proctor. Particularly at corner we haven't been positioned this well since 2019. Overall just really intrigued by this defense because I think we can be a top 3 defense.
