The Night the Ceiling Fell In

You kids stay off my lawn!
Well, you're not really a Buckeye unless you have a Thurber story, and while I can give this a Thurber-like title I am without ability to make it endlessly giggle the way James could.

We hired our Godson, Matt, to do a new roof for us. We had the money ready in March. Matt couldn't get it together to get started until June -- late June. I will grant you that we have had rain pretty much off and on all of June and so far in July.... oh why am I going into this?

Long story short with the project falling farther and farther behind and just suddenly catching fire with a crew of three or four working most days -- albeit seldom before 10 AM, It looked like the new roof, with extended rakes and eaves was taking form when Matt up and announces at 9PM on a Friday night, "I'm going home, shower, pack and get ready to take off for Florida. I'll be gone for a week, but Jesse knows what to do and he'll get the roof secured."

He left with less than half the roof covered with sheathing and tarps covering the openings. The roof began to show leaks following Saturday morning's rain, more appeared with Sunday's sprinkles and of course, though the weather was largely pleasant, no one showed up to work on the roof either of those twso days.

Jesse wandered in about 11 on Monday and with a single helper began to get more sheathing in place and to do that he had to take all the tarps off the roof. Around 5 PM I sat in my back yard deck, enjoying a bit of scotch, a cigar and a good book and watched as a thunder head came in and, naturlemont, caught Jesse with no tarp on the roof. In fact, before the rain hit, he called Matt to ask what to do and Matt whipped out his i-phone, looked at the weather map and said, "Keep on working. The storm is way north of you."

From Florida, looking at the 4 inch screen of your i-phone you have a better idea of the weather in Cincinnati than someone sitting on the roof of a house in Cincinnati

Cut again to the fact that every ceiling on the second floor of our house is now mostly on the floor, the carpets are ruined, we have insulation all over the house, everything is turned upside down, we are living out of hampers and my MacBook is fried.

Matt has returned, reluctantly, and when last seen was finally getting all the sheathing and tar paper done as it is suppossed to rain tonight and most of tomorrow.

Now then, neighbors have been terriffic, but you could have blwon me away when the folks across the street and three doors down -- the ones with the Buckeye helmet mail box, walked up and said. "We're going on vacation on Friday, why don't you stay in our house for the week?"

Time and change will surely show, how firm thy friendship, Oh hi oh.
