New York Islanders forward Chris Simon has been suspended for the remainder of the 2006-07 regular season and the entirety of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Simon is suspended a minimum of 25 games, including Saturday night's game against Washington plus the 14 that remain in the 2006-07 regular season. If the Islanders do not qualify for the 2007 playoffs, or play fewer than 10 playoff games in the 2007 playoffs, Simon would serve additional games at the start of the 2007-08 regular season to satisfy the minimum term of the suspensio

I'll join that club. What a piece of crap. Take a run at Modano, sucker punch the guy coming to Modano's defense and then go after Modano again. Wish Tyler Wright could get 5 imnutes in a closed room with Hannibal there.

TSN : NHL - Canada's Sports Leader

Jim Balsillie wants to prove Hamilton is a viable NHL market.
Sources say the prospective new owner of the Nashville Predators intends to do so by soliciting season tickets deposits for seats and suites at Copps Coliseum.
A season ticket campaign is expected to commence Thursday with all deposits fully refundable. Purchasers will put their money down with no promises in terms of when, or if, an NHL team will eventually call Hamilton home.
Sources say the price range for deposits is: $500 for upper bowl seats; $1,000 for lower bowl seats; and $5,000 for suites.

this should be interesting it splits the buff market (small market) and the leafs market solidly in two with competition for both...

NHL tweaks rules on penalty shots, faceoffs, interference and misconducts

NEW YORK (CP) - There might be more penalty shots during NHL games next season after the board of governors tweaked some rules Wednesday.

A player may now be awarded a free shot if he is fouled on a clear breakaway anywhere in the neutral or attacking zones. Previously, a penalty shot was awarded only when a player on a clear breakaway was fouled on the attacking side of the centre line.

Rules on faceoffs, interference and misconduct penalties were also tweaked.

All faceoffs must now be conducted at one of the nine dots painted on the rink. Some faceoffs, such as when a puck left the playing surface, were previously held on unmarked ice parallel to the dot nearest the place where the puck left the playing surface.

The interference rule was altered so referees can at their discretion assess a major penalty and a game misconduct when an injury results from an act of interference. Previously, only a minor penalty could be assessed for interference.

The term "gross misconduct" was eliminated from the rule book. A game misconduct will now be assessed, and accumulated game misconduct penalties can lead to fines or suspensions.

It’ll soon become known as the Scott Hartnell theory.

When NHL teams are faced with the decision of keeping an 18-year-old draftee on the roster or send him back to the development ranks, they’ll consider what happened regarding Hartnell.

Hartnell cracked the Nashville lineup as an 18-year-old rookie in 2000-01 even though he had two more seasons of junior eligibility remaining with the Western League’s Prince Albert Raiders.

He had just two goals and 16 points in 75 games that season, but has since evolved into a top-six forward who, according to TSN, signed a six-year, $25.2-million contract with the Flyers Monday.

ESPN WANTS HOCKEY BACK

A source has told me that ESPN is desperate to get back into the hockey game, and has let it be known. Versus has the NHL this season and the option to re-up for another 3 years...I am being told that Versus is on the fence and the NHL may offer up a package of games to Versus, while returning the majority of the deal to ESPN next season. In essence this could give the NHL its biggest presence to date on National TV in the US. NBC for the weekend games and finals, ESPN and ESPN2 for the majority of the season games and playoffs, and Versus (who by the way, may become a vehicle for the NHL Network in the US) will have a Game of the Week similar to the deal that TNT has in the NBA.

We got an HDTV for Christmas and damn does hockey look great! Too bad you can only catch in on one national cable network (VS) and the occasional regional FSN is you've got satellite (which I don't).

As a huge fan, I would love for the sport to grow, however, it won't ever be what it was (new rules and all) until it gets back onto a major network and into the good graces of ESPN/ABC.
