The Simpsons Movie - Official Thread

Saw it on Saturday and I thought it was a very good movie, but not as great as it could have been. It felt as though this movie should have been done 10-12 years ago because almost all the themes in it have already been done on television ad nauseum. Like I said, it was a very good movie and I enjoyed it, but I don't think the story warranted the big screen and could have been told on tv.

Favorite moment: they showed the crashed ambulance next to Springfield Gorge--now that was classic! (Long fans of the show will know what this refers to.)

First, before seeing the movie, I had heard that it was "just another episode - only longer." But no one can explain what that means. What's the difference between a "movie" and a "long episode?"

Being a huge Simpsons fan, I thought the movie was great. My wife, however, isn't so much a Simpsons fan (though she still likes the show), and said the movie was "decent." How much you like the show will greatly impact how much you like the movie. But that's not really a surprise. Someone who doesn't like bananas probably shouldn't expect to like banana cream pie.

That's what I've been wondering. I loved the Simpsons up until about 2003-2004. I just kinda lost interest around that timeframe as the quality of the episodes began to noticeably dwindle to me.

I admittedly haven't seen very many of the newer episodes, but it seems to me that recently The Simpsons has tried to emulate Family Guy's style which has made The Simpsons not as good.

Yeah, I'm probably one of the few people that doesn't find 'The Family Guy' all that appealing. It has it's moments and I do get some laughs, but the humor is, for the most part, just to generic for me.

As for the quality of the episodes, I can answer a bit. I know this is all "I have a friend who heard from someone else" stuff, so take it for what it's worth. But, I have a a friend who heard from someone else that the Simpsons were getting too much of a show that would showcase Homer's stupidity. So they started to highlight the other characters, as well. That was about the time that a lot of people have been thinking the quality has been dropping.

But I've liked recent episodes. Not as much as Seasons 8-9. (If I were to make a list of top 20 episodes, I'd guess that I could easily put 10 episodes from Seasons 8-9 on that list.) I guess it's hard for me to put the movie into a category according to which season it's most like. But I'd guess if I had to, I'd say that it's most like some recent episodes, but it would be a good episode. Homer is Homer, Marge is Marge, Lisa is Lisa, etc.

If you're worried about it, or you're not a fan, just rent it on DVD when it comes out.
