I'm a big Boondock Saints fan and every time the dude talks I'm waiting for the Irish accent.

I knew I recognized him from somewhere! Damn, how did I miss that?

I dunno, but that's the first thing I noticed during that 2nd episode. I was like holy no fucking way! I wanted to hear him bust out the prayer on a zombie before lacing an arrow to his/her head.

Season finale was strong as expected. Have to wonder what the doc whispered on the way out. Couple of minor complaints. I think the CDC would have a more sustainable energy source than drums of fuel in the basement. That felt forced so the writers could inject their green statement about "fossil fuels." Secondly, I'd have to believe that the concussive effects of an explosion strong enough to destroy that building would have at the very least blown out the windows of the cars if not flipped them and jellied the insides of the group.

Alright, people here seam to like this. So this is not going to be popular. Anyway, here I go...

The first episode, pretty good. Then all down hill. I wish I could go through the countless stupidity in this show, and perhaps in a future post I will go through it step by step. Yet I really liked the beginning, and since then I have continued to hope for more. There were flashes in some of the episodes that followed, but also a growing multitude of WTF moments (I actually started some of that on another board, perhaps I will transfer it over at some point).

This last episode even started out ok, so I thought "good, it's getting better.": Then it went downhill so fast I couldn't even catch my breath with the amount of stupidity displayed. I honestly could not stop thinking "you are an idiot! You are the most stupid person in the history of the world!" Then, guess what, minutes later, heck, in some cases, seconds later, someone proved me wrong. This whole episode was drawn from one of the biggest Hollywood hacks on Earth. There is a reason the whole writing cast was fired. They took a great idea, and destroyed it. Now, the comic book author did write one episode and I believe the originator of the series wrote some of the first ones. Yet the last few are nothing short of an abomination, and this one was the culmination of crap.

For most stuff I wouldn't really care, but there is so much here and they did so many things wrong. I don't know, I might be back but I am sure it will take some good reviews. Yet this whole thing was so horribly written it's tough to care about 1 single character, let alone the group. It's tough to put into words my dissapointment as I watched this show. So much there, and at every turn someone did not just act irrationally, but beyond comprehension. I know it's a zombie apocalypse, but you still have to write relatable characters, and they can't constantly act at the human extremes. The whole zombie apocalypse is enough. Give me something real, not crazy crap on top of non stop crazy crap.

OK, rant over.

Yeah, I almost wondered if it was about the zombies, or what makes them tick, or where to go, or that his wife was pregnant, or his kid wasn't his, or that the other dude is after his wife...who knows. I'm sure they'll revisit that in episode 1 next season. I thought the most interesting part of the episode actually was the cryptic "no surprises" answer to "how was the blood" though...makes you wonder what exactly was going on there.

I agree about the explosion completely, I mean the computer itself said it was the most powerful explosion short of nuclear...then it just blows up one building??? It would have taken out at least a city block, methinks, if not more. Was disappointed in that.

I thought the decision of the lady to die was weakly written at best...it was like they just needed an excuse not to renew her contract. Especially after they made a big deal about the crazy old dude and the attractive blonde and then whole "I'm staying if you're staying" thing...then she just offs herself on a whim? Reminded me of Alex Kingston's departure on ER...just a complete joke.

I'm guessing that dude's wife is pregnant- based solely on the looks he kept giving her on the way out...

I thought the same thing about the fossil fuel comment and explosion. Although, the CDC is mostly deep under ground, so I was expecting a huge blast straight up into the air that rained down tons of debris and not an overly powerful shockwave.

What were you expecting? Citizen Kane in the midst of Zombies? Wow, some people are very hard to please. It was entertaining and has a pretty good story line with some back story being filled in. To each their own I guess.

I think it was about the kid not being his. I am almost convinced that she and Shane had a long standing affair.

Yeah, that is what I was expecting. I expect masterpieces of cinema every week.

How about this....not having random characters with no back story suddenly decide "you know what, screw it, time to die through an inferno. Seems like a good way to go."

A scientist who says the most stupid things, decides to kill people (which was premeditated once he let them in), changes his mind after some mind numbing dialogue, and then gets all relieved that they made it out. That whole scene was one of the worst things I have ever watched in my entire life.

A redneck obsessed with finding his brother, well, for about a day. Then is fine with moving camp and does nothing for his brother to find them in case he came back.

A group of people, in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, decide that rocks somehow stop light and have no one on watch. They just decide to yuck it up, in the middle of the night, right after they discovered a walker near the camp the a day or two before. They even talked about the liklihood more walkers would show up. I was rooting for the zombies to kill them.

Hey, let's not use any form of natural barrier to help up defend the camp at night. It's not like there is a big lake around somewhere, nor being on a huge hill in the middle of a forest could we find other natural barriers or wood that could help us build some barriers. Naw, we should be good. Not like there is a zombie apocalypse going on.

"We have to get those guns!"
"yeah, but they attract more walkers."
"We need those guns!"
"Um, isn't that bow a really good idea?"
"No! We must go after those guns in the middle of thousands of walkers!"
"You know, I know of a sports store out in the suburbs. Not only would it have more bows and arrows, but probably some guns too and a lot safer, or heck, look around. Crap is dropped all over the place including military equipment."
"No! I must get those guns even though death is highly likely. Without them we die."
"Yeah, because everytime you kill a walker with a gun more show up. Great idea! OK, let's go get em!"

That whole old folks home/hospital episode. "We don't trust you and we are going to kill you! Oh wait, some random old lady. OK, wander on up, we now trust you fully."

They worry about blood from the infected during certain times, and others they are getting it splattered all over them.

The whole cast was stolen from a Benneton ad, with some wonderful stereotypes thrown in for good measure.

Those are just some of the things off the top of my head. There are more.

Anyway, as I mentioned, I really wanted to like this series. The first episode was good, and Sol from Snatch had a cool story line. Yet some of the terrible dialogue, poor character development, and outright stupid, lazy writing hurts it. I find myself rooting for the zombies because the majority of characters are so incredibly stupid. You don't have to be of the level of Citizen Kane in order to have characters that use common sense and have the watcher actually care a little bit for them. BTW....they are already making writing staff changes (initial report is they were all fired, but official report is "some changes").

Far be it from me to tell you what to think of a show, but I would say that stereotypes can be brutally effective devices if used properly in a story. There is a lot of underlying symbolism in the characters and in their reactions to each other that aren't especially deep but make the show more entertaining. As for the blood, there are a lot of different characters with different reactions to it...isn't that to be expected in an epic disaster where no one knows what is going on? Take all the ways different people reacted to the plague in the Middle Ages...basically the same story. I agree the show has been overwritten while costing some (and in some cases quite a bit of) consistency, but any pilot season, especially on a network that normally nobody watches, needs to be that way to attract enough viewers to justify a full second season. If they had spaced these events amongst 12 episodes or 24 instead of 6, they would have had more time to deal with the other stuff and develop the characters a bit more. Hopefully season 2 will settle down.

That's my take on it anyway. Oh, and off the path, but Citizen Kane was boring as fuck.
