The Walking Dead (Official Thread)

Dormant until they die? As long as Herschel is alive he'll be fine but what are the odds of that after Rick did a hachet job on him?

Which brings me back to my original question...why hatchet it? Easier to treat a bite than an amputated limb, no?

That was a lot of damage to the leg. Likely to get infected because of the dirty bite. Maybe he just panicked? Herschel is the guy with the doctoring knowledge. That's a good question that I don't think they will answer. But it made for a nice grisly scene! :tongue2:

They're all fucking infected, so why does it matter? This is the one thing about the opener I didn't get. Remember one of the farm girls was bitten too? She ended up recovering if I recall. If everyone has the virus already, then why would a bite turn Herschel into an immediate zombie? I think they're getting their story arcs confused...

Essentially the canon from the comics is:

1. Everyone who dies turns into a zombie
2. Being bitten by a zombie kills you

If you need to rationalize it think of it along these lines:
1. Everyone has a dormant strain of the virus in their systems which becomes active upon death.
2. Fluid to fluid contact (saliva to blood) with the active strain of the virus results in rapid onset of death.

Thus being bitten by a zombie causes death, and death results in becoming a zombie.

Amputating the limb could possibly stop the spread of the active virus before it results in death.

FWIW the amputation scene in the comics doesn't involve Herschel. It involves a character (Allen) who was not translated into the screen version.

Remember that the title of the show doesn't refer to the zombies. It refers to the main characters. They are the walking dead.

It's my understanding that dieing will turn you, but the zombies themselves carry something that being bitten or scratched will also kill you. But something different. Remember the two guards they found in season two that had no marks on them, but were zombies.

This season is going to be great. As stated before and by the shows creator on Talking Dead, the show and the graphic novels/comics run in separate universes. The characters are close but not exact but the over arching story is the core of the show. The prime example of this is character Daryl. I've yet to see him in any of the novels but his part was written specifically for him. (side bar I heard that he is currently filming a movie in the Congo and might be missing, I hope not).

Now onto what happened. If you watched the coming up on at the end of the episode they clearly have buried a person as seen by the cross in the ground. I am going to guess Herschel but with this show you never know. I think in the show it's like the novel that Rick is desperate to find out if they can do anything for someone that is bitten. Nobody has come back from a bite from a walker so why not try it. If they lose Herschel it'll be real interesting to see who develops into the moral compass for Rick.

I have never felt such a disdain for a female character as I have for Lori. She is half of the reason why they are in the situations that they have been put in. She led Shane on after Rick returned, she led Rick into believing that Shane was a threat so Rick felt it necessary to kill him. And when he drew down on him it showed. (side bar, EXTREMELY different than the novels, prime example as to the different universes)

Carl is really going to "grow up" this season. No more little kids to distract him, hell he's even going after Herschel's other daughter now.

The Andrea and Michonne (and her pets) character pairing. Michonne is a complete and total badass and Andrea was developing into one also. I look for lots of zombie kills from these two.

The prisoner. The characters and how they will be different than the characters in the novels will be quite interesting. This could be the perfect opportunity for them to give some "new blood" to the story line, but then again it could just be "fresh meat" for the walkers.

I can't wait for this season. It's going to be phenomenal, just like the show has been from the beginning.

So what did people think of this episode? I didn't hate it, but it was kinda weird, a little too soap opera-ish. Rick went Shane on some people (cool machete kill, but why feed the little dude to the walkers?), Lori plays the double sympathy card, Herschel goes for the WWE false finish on Lori and then wakes up, Maggie and Glen are sorta spatting, Daryl is still bat-shit awesome and his girlie/mother/friend/awkward chick goes autopsy on a chick walker. Meanwhile Carl is running resistence missions without anyone else knowing it. Looks like next week is an exclusive blondie/ass-kicker eposide, so that ought to liven things up.

I liked it. What I thought thought was great was when Herch went false finish, the cut scene to Carl standing there with his piece aimed at him was awesome. That kid is slowly turning into less annoying and more badass.

the scene with Lori and Rick at the end was awkward. Seems like he want's nothing to do with here outside of simply being a part of their group now.

I think he fed that dude to the Walkers because he came at him with the bat. Why they forced the other two, who seemed like alright guys, into seclusion in the other cell block is what I didn't understand.

Looks like we'll finally see Merl next week. I hope they show a flash back of how he escaped the city. Or did they do that already and I missed it?

I think Rick still see the prisoners (I mean they are still in fact PRISONERS) as threats, but he didn't want to be that callus, he actually saw something good in them. He really doesn't give a shit about another other human being other than the group at this point. Or at least that's how I saw it.

And as a late comer to the party I just read through the ENTIRE thread. Please someone give me that 30 minutes of my life back. If everyone hates the show as much as they say they do, STOP FUCKING WATCHING IT!!111!! EMPHASIS!

I've only seen the first half of the episode but it seems to me that Rick should've gone Scarface and shot the greaser beaner with the revolver and the tiny black kid with the big mouth and then offered the others a job.

Wow. What an episode. I knew who unlocked the gate and turned on the alarm. I did not, however, anticipate Lori getting cut open to deliver the baby and then getting finished by Carl.

Andrea continues to be a dumb bitch. She needs to go. I really wish they would not have killed off T Dog. He was one of my favorite characters.

T Dogg seemed to have some sort of loyal following. Personally, I thought he was pretty forgettable. Wonder what happens to Carole now. Where the heck did she run to while TDogg was getting eaten?

Carl has went from pussy to man in 3 short episodes.

Can someone tell me what the fuck the purpose was of T-Dog surviving season 1? I mean, he has had no character development, he has more or less been in the background of every episode, they kill off half the characters, opening up some serious slots for him this year, and boom...3 episodes in, he's a dead T-Dog. Some of the way they deal with this show makes no fucking sense.

On the other hand I liked the eposide, I wasn't expecting Lori to die so soon, if only because the writers seem to like tormenting the audience with her...interesting to see what they do with Rick and Carl now. Not sure where short-hair went, but I imagine they'll find her next week. I imagine a reunion of Daryl and Merle is coming, just a question of what happens. Not a big fan of the way they are handling the Governor storyline, but it is early yet I guess. Michonne needs a chance to shine in the coming weeks also.
