Not a big fan of spiders, either...

Me either. Snakes don't bother me a bit.

Went to Florida about five years ago to install fence. Went to take a piss over by the lone palm tree in about five square miles of fields. There is a section of silt fence near the tree. I step over the fence, unzip, and as I happen to look up, I notice this fucking tree is COVERED. The spiders were yellow, white and black, with stripes of the same colors on it's..uh..ass? They had a zig-zag pattern in the middle of every web. I slowly step backwards, and as I look down to make sure I clear the silt fence, I notice they are everywhere on the ground as well. I damn near jumped out of my skin. Never before or since have I ran that fast.

Spiders generally don't bother me but boy that experience sure would freak me out!

Oooo. Made me remember another thing that creeps me out. Maggots. I was living in a 5 bedroom house with 4 guys once. Ug. Guys that were even worse than normal about not doing things like making sure to take the garbage can to the curb and stuff. I went out to the side yard one day and the can was just piled with bags. Wouldn't fit in the can anymore, some sitting next to it, etc. I decided I would try to stuff the bags in so I could get the can to the curb. So I pulled a bag off and set it down. Pulled on the second bag and it was caught just a little bit, on something in another bag. So in one smooth motion, I pulled the second bag up and off /out of the can backward over my head, it rips, the ripped section of the bag arcs over my head and a fast, thick rain of maggots falls down in a swathe across my face, head, shoulders and back.............. I can't remember shrieking that loud over anything in my life.

That's a Golden Orb Spider found mostly in the south pacific.

I've seen them much larger (8"-10") in the Northern Training Area of Okinawa. Its a triple canopy jungle with lots of creepy crawlies and Habu Snakes.

Fun place for night patrols. If the spiders and snakes don't get you, the wild boar and cliffs will. Its pitch black at night and point men have nasty habit of walking right off of cliffs they couldn't see.

Not sure if this is the right spider, but close enough. They were big enough that when I was able to retrieve my balls from my throat, I caught one in a 20oz. coffee cup and duct taped a lid on it and brought it back. I got a GOOD look at it...

True story. I went to a new MacDonalds a while back for a bag of simple cheeseburgers. I think we were painting a room in the house and wanted a quick lunch so we could get back to the project. I brought the bag home and began eating the burger when I noticed the onions on the bun were moving. Maggots instead of diced onions do look similar! I can't stand those lilttle f*($#ers. Then when I returned the sandwiches with my complaint, they wanted to know if I wanted new ones. Give me a break. :(

I have a maggot fobia today and am scarred for life. Next creepy thing please...

Wiki seems to think its an "orb web spider." Specifically a "yellow garden spider" and it sounds like you found a mating tree or maybe some nursery or something. eep.

The web of the yellow garden spider is distinctive: a circular shape up to 2 feet in diameter, with a dense zigzag of silk, known as a stabilimentum, in the center.

I'm tellin' you, all of the pictures of that spider I've found look like the same kind I see up here occasionally in the summer. These spiders had a striped thorax. I have no clue if thats what the spiders ass is called, I'm just guessing. But it was far bigger than the garden spiders in the pics. Eh, I may have been having a flashback.

The females get pretty big, according to these pics. They are also the ones that have that distinctive coloring. The flowers in this pic have pretty big clusters of flowers so the spider is a goooood size. Nice shot of the "zig zag" too.
