Thomas Robinson tragedy; rule bending

He's the one Jayhawk who wasn't here Tuesday taking part in KU's 82-78 win over Colorado. He was instead back home in Washington D.C. biding his time between funerals. He buried his grandmother three weeks ago, buried his grandfather Tuesday, and he'll now bury his 37-year-old mother, Lisa Robinson, on Thursday. She died of an apparent heart attack last Friday night. Thomas' little sister, a second-grader named Jayla, was the person who called Thomas to deliver the news because there was, quite simply, nobody else to make the call.

Nobody wanted to talk specifics on the record out of respect for the family, but it's already clear there are no shortage of people -- KU coaches, KU boosters, etc., -- willing to, with the proper blessings, become Jayla's legal guardian and move her close to her brother. That's an option being discussed, but there are hurdles that must first be cleared because a KU coach or booster financially assisting a relative of a KU student-athlete would technically be a violation of NCAA rules.

Quite a story, hope it all works out for them. Think there should be some exceptions in this case for sure.

I know they've made exceptions before. Can't remember the names or team but I know a football player was the legal guardian of his little brother. One of the networks did a feature on it.

Clemson I believe. Ray Ray McElrathbey.

Didn't the NCAA let tOSU help one of the players (Abdullah?) families when they were devestated by a Huricane?

This is another of those times to allow someone to do what is right, though technically against the rules.

I never posted an update to this, but things are working out.

Thomas Robinson stepped out of a limousine Thursday morning and wrapped his arms around his 9-year-old sister, Jayla, who refused to let go. She clung to the right thigh of her 6-foot-9 brother and nestled her face in the side of his coat, concealing almost everything except the multicolored beads atop her head.

...

The most moving moment came when Jayla stood behind the podium, her head barely visible. She had a note to her mom that she wanted to read. In 30 seconds, she used her soft, barely audible voice to tell her mom that she loved her.

...

The NCAA has helped Kansas assist Thomas by granting a number of waivers. It gave the program permission to fly to Washington for the funeral service. It allowed the athletic department to pay for the funeral expenses. And it will allow Robinson to bring Jayla with him to Kansas at the school's expense.

Man, that is a heartbreaking number of funerals to have to endure in a month within your immediate family. Glad to hear that things are being done that need to to let what is left of the family get back to whatever sense of normalcy may be left.

I can't imagine this kid still playing ball. All of that loss in such a minute amount of time really is a tragedy and now he has a little sister that has become his ward. As if he didn't have enough on his plate with school and basketball at a school where just playing there brings its own level of pressure.

Good luck to him. He's going to need a lot of it.
