Thoughts on Tennessee Coaching Staff?

Showtime

The University of Tennessee has assembled a coaching staff currently worth 3.6 million dollars, and they aren't totally done as of yet. After Phillip Fulmer resigned from his position, Lane Kiffin was hired from Oakland to replace him. Kiffin then hired father Monte to run the defense, Ed Oregon to coach the defensive line, and added Lance Thompson and David Reaves.

One thing that stands out about this staff is they are very rich in recruiting. What do you guys think of this staff? Do you think they're a letdown if they don't produce a title?

I would think so. Expectations are always high there. What remains to be seen is how Kiffin coaches the college game. I thought he did the best he could with the talent he had in Oakland, but who knows how he'll do with college kids. He could be Pete Carroll or he could be another Wannstache.

Recruiting was never the problem for the Vols, it was what they were getting out of those recruits. That's an impressive defensive staff though. Will he have the offense to match it?

A lot of egos on this staff and a lot of people who are used to doing things their own way. I'm almost certain nobody has told Monte Kiffin how to run his defense for the past 10+ years. While its likely they won't next year either, he still has former coordinators/coaches reporting to him.

We'll see how their attrition rate is after year 1 and year 2.

Recruits and their parents aren't dumb. If there is a lack of continuity on the staff or general tension - they'll feel it and go elsewhere.

I don't think staff cohesion will be a problem-Kiffin will give his dad carte blance on D, and Orgeron will do what he does best-recruit and coach D-linemen, without worrying about anything else.
Orgeron will help Tennessee with it's biggest problem-a less than stellar d-line. Someone actually asked Fulmer what his biggest problem was and he replied "I don't have the elite d-linemen that I had a couple of years ago".
