Thread Tags

I see more and more people are adding tags to threads (myself included) and was wondering if anyone thought of some kind of standard for yearly threads. For example, the thread http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/buckeye-football/608944-jwins-football-check-camp-pics.html has a tag of 2009 football but the thread http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/buckeye-football/607052-2008-linebacker-discussion.html has a tag of 2008 football season. If the tag idea takes off (which I like and have added many myself) it might be a good idea to have a standard for those kinds of tags for quick searching.

Good point, and I hope to see the tag system take off too. I think the bigger we get, the harder it is to find the information we want. While I've gone to some lengths to really empower our search functionality, tags can only enhance that goal.

Calling a season by the year is always confusing. The games will be played in 2008 this year, but the title in 2009. So is it the 2008 season and the 2009 championship? Or is it the 2009 season? Perhaps our standard (if we can manage one) should be something like "2008/09"?

That's a good idea... something like "2008/09 [insert sport]" since we follow multiple sports... the word season would be redundant. Professional sports could be "2008/09 NFL" or something similar. We also have to take into account sports that only fall in one calendar year (like baseball) but that is much easier to figure out.

I just found out the "2008/09 [sport]" format won't work... web browsers think 2008 is a directory. I would use "2008-09 [sport]" instead.

A side benefit to that format is that it's unlikely to be used for anything other than a school year, so it will likely yield more specific search results.

The / issue is related to vbSEO's rewriting rules. I'll take a look at that, and/or post on their site asking about it if it appears to be a bug or oversight.
