Tony "Benedict" Alford (meh)

Maybe not having Hayden ready for pass pro is on Alford.

Alford seems like a guy whos been on the decline, things have been very up and down in recruiting with him and there have been some development question marks as well. If he came from some other random school and not Ohio State the Michigan people probably would not be having such a big celebration about the hire.

Given how Dallan has been recruited over (via the portal) and has not played despite what appears to be a depth issue last year, I'm beginning to wonder (well not beginning, I had my doubts last year) if he isn't this era's Mo Wells clone. Looks good at time, long enough for people to wonder why he might not play more, yet doesn't really have the talent to stick full-time.

Not sure if that's a totally coherent thought either

You're a Hartline Truther? Have you spliced together a highlight reel yet of Buckeye receiver nastiest blocks from 2023? Hit me up when you finish it. Hopefully you can fit in a bonus clip of Marvin's extra effort on that interception.
I only listen to Smith when I’m out of all other Ohio State content, but I think it’s funny that he’s extremely critical of his replacement, and seems to be extremely supportive of the guys directly connected to Meyer—Dennis and now Alford. It’s pretty clear what motivates the angle he takes on things (what will reduce or advance his relationship with Meyer, and petty bullshit about his replacement who most people consider way better at it than he was) which is pretty important context to keep in mind when you consider the things he says.

That's cool - by the time they play I expect the offense will look a lot more like what Chip Kelly runs than what Ryan Day ran last year.

Yep. Day is no longer going to be stubbornly calling his favorite plays over and over again, they might as well throw out any of that intel they had on us. Guessing UCLA probably wasn't high on their priority list during their illegal scouting run.

Going to a dumpster fire that's bracing for sanctions could actually work out if She-ron Moore gets a show-cause. Alford could backdoor his way into an interim head coach job.

Zach Smith is saying that this move is somewhat personal between Alford and Day evidenced by every other coach getting extended while Alford got a pay cut on his one year left. And Day told the whole staff after the bowl game that their jobs weren't guaranteed so you can't fault Alford for taking a long term deal from a place that wants him. Especially when Day gives his useless buddy a two year deal with a raise just to fire him after one with the second year paid out in a pretty clear case of using taxpayer funds to enrich a friend. And you have Hartline next to you getting paid coordinator money when his receivers can only pay flag football - directly affecting the run game.

You can fault him for the destination but that's the place with money that's having a hard time attracting coaches. And maybe he has dreams about sticking it to Day.
This would be the only sense I can make of this move for Alford. Maybe a year ago this wouldn't be surprising. Coming in to inherit Corum and Edwards, Harbaugh is coach, good OL...now you walk into a room sans Corum, coaching staff is upside down, most of the team is gone and they're about to go to Sanction City. Can't help but feel this is at least somewhat mutual.

I don't wish anything but good health to those who go to that school. So good health to Tony. He was a pretty good recruiter and developed the talent initially. But it might work out best this way.

The only real problem I had with him of late was whatever was going on with Hayden. But yeah he's on my shitlist now

I realize you're just trying to get a reaction, but GTFOH...

From a poster on 11W:
Information on Alford's departure from someone who would know...

1) Direct quote: "he hates Coach Day"

2) Alford wanted contract stability and he didn't have it at Ohio State.

3) His kids are all graduated from high school so it was a good time for him to pick up and move.
It all makes sense, and some of the info has been hinted to already in some recent posts. But this is just a little more clear and concise
