Tony Joiner (Former S Florida Gators)

Yep. Ohio State fans are demonstrably tougher on any alleged crimes by their guys.:roll2:

Uhm, Gator, I like you and all, but take a look at the Henton thread, we're like complete and total douchebags about our players messing around. Hell, we had a dude try to pay for some love in the worst part of columbus and get busted and I saw people saying he should be kicked off the team. Sorry, you are wrong here, I like you as a poster, I love having you as a member, but you have to realize that most of us aren't complete homers.

Give us some credit dude.

Not saying you are all homers. I guess I was mostly replying to Steve19. I don't think that any program in the country is immune to this sort of shit, and i don't think that any fan base is the country is free from the mindset with their own guys that "let's see how it pans out", while if it is the other guys' team saying throw them off the team, the coach is a win at all cost tool etc...

Granted, this is not Bucknuts (hell, if it was I would not hang around), but I don't see a call for Henton to be tossed either. I saw a lot of "he is humiliated pretty good, and that ought to be considered..etc", and few suggestions that he be launched. Not that I think he should either.

And it was stupid of TJ to do that. But I don't think it burglary, and I do want to wait for the facts. I think up to me he sits out LSU (which about ensures the loss) and we wait to see, no matter the final outcome of the charges. I don't think it was as bad as a lot of shit that goes on, and I do think he did the right thing hanging around for the cops when a thug would have tried to book.

And NF, I don't understand your comment, unless some idiot said that on the forum after the article. I've never said that.

Considering the crime dude, I don't think he should be kicked off, perhaps he will suffer the same torment as Henton, who's new nickname will be "Dolla Shawt."

Buckeyes aren't excused from stupidity because they put on a uniform, and I have grown to expect the same with you, that was all I was saying. I don't expect you to be leading the charge with torches and pitchforks, but I do expect you to have a comment other than "yeah, if he was a buckeye..." especially here.

And if you look over the Henton thread, there's a lot of people who have said things like "he's tarnished the image of the university and should be kicked' etc... I don't agree with that.

Trying to be indifferent here, I see it like the Henton case, he should be punished for being dumb but not ruined, toss him for a quarter in a game where it really doesn't matter, let the media know so they can pan the camera on his anguish multiple times in those 15 minutes and let him deal with the "Troy Smith" issue, where everytime he does something some jackass brings up a case that isn't relevant to the issue.

Oh, and for the record, anyone who has had their car impounded has wanted to jump that fence and drive out, those tow-truck guys are crooks.

Fair enough. But when I read some shit about how he'll automatically be cleared and play because of a cover up, and how Florida football is not capable of honor, I tend to skip over the obligatory whipping of the player first. My bad OC.

Well, then, if you want to ensure accuracy, shouldn't you do the same? Why associate me with a bunch of comments on BuckNuts to which I don't subscribe?

I have no idea of what might constitute an "honor system" at Florida. Surely, the history under the "old ball coach" and since has been without controversy, right? :roll1:

As to the matter at hand, you appear to expect Buckeye fans to grant Joiner some kind of sainthood because he "did the right thing" and you'd like to be fair and "wait for the facts".

Well, the facts are in. Joiner was caught breaking in to an impoundment yard to steal an impounded vehicle for a friend.

He didn't do the right thing. He was guilty of breaking and entering, by admission. There is no dispute by anyone about these facts.

Why did Joiner stick around? Should we accept that he had an epiphany and grant him sainthood or is another conclusion more reasonable?

Well, it seems reasonable to conclude that the senior co-captain of the Florida football team would be recognizable in the area. I mean, given his exposure in the press in the area in recent years and especially this year, could he not reasonably conclude that someone had recognized him (or possibly realized he was recognized)? If so, would it not be reasonable for Joiner would conclude that it would simply make it worse it he ran?

As for the other matter you raise, one need not be a homer to find the comparison of Joiner to Antonio Henton to be without basis.

Henton, as you may have read, has pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor. Until he is found to be guilty, there is no basis to be making any judgement about him, except that he seems to have been foolish to involve himself in a situation that could lead to such charges.

Joiner was arrested at the scene and is by admission guilty of a felony.

Now, do I think Joiner should go to jail? No. Do I think he should be immediately suspended until his situation is clarified? Yes. After all, he has admitted that he is guilty of a felony. As a captain, he is supposed to be setting an example.

Florida fans will want Joiner's guilt to be defined by the $76 price tag. It should not. It should be defined by the crime of breaking and entering. His penalty should be defined by the $76 and whatever damage he did to gain entry. A very important distinction.

What should happen if he's found guilty but avoids jail time? He should be the subject of a suitable disciplinary hearing and punishment. I don't know what is fair but the University of Florida President should give a stamp of approval to whatever penalty is imposed to ensure fairness.

Gatorubet, we agree that any program is susceptible to a player falling foul of the law. If you examine my posts, I am not a Gator-hater.

We disagree that people on BP act as homers and don't criticize the players. In fact, if you go to the Henton thread, you will see that I personally intervened as a BP college football moderator to stop the criticism from crossing the line so that Henton was subjected to player bashing. Your characterization of thread is clearly inaccurate.

I don't like the association your post makes about me, even if it was unintentional. I hope this sets the record straight.

Surprise - Surprise

Felony burglary charge against Florida's Joiner dropped; will travel to LSU

Florida head coach Urban Meyer said today that Tony Joiner will travel with the team for its game at LSU on Saturday.
All charges against Joiner were dropped this morning by state prosecutors after the senior safety was arrested earlier this week on a felony burglary charge for breaking into a Gainesville tow lot and trying to retrieve his girlfriend's impounded car. The owner of the lot called it a misunderstanding and didn't wish to pursue charges.
Meyer stripped Joiner of his captaincy. The Gators' head coach didn't specify how much Joiner would play, if he would be suspended for any part of the LSU game or if he would start. Florida co-defensive coordinator Greg Mattison said the Gators were preparing to go with Dorian Munroe at strong safety if Joiner couldn't play.
"Tony being out late on Monday is not consistent with the expectations of a leader and a team captain of our football program," Meyer said in a statement. "Tony is no longer a captain of the Gator football team and he will pay a heavy price for his behavior internally for the next four weeks. He will travel with the team for our game vs. LSU."
Spencer Mann, chief investigator for the State Attorney's Office, said the charge was dropped because the towing company "believes it's a big misunderstanding."
"The victim is adamant that he sustained no loss or damage and does not wish to pursue criminal charges," Mann said. "Based on that information, we cannot sustain a criminal charge. Without a victim, I have no crime."

My Urban Meyer-bullshit-to-English translator reads thusly:

"Tony will run stadium steps at 5:30am every day this month except for on days that he has classes, practices, games, or needs to sleep in. Also he will no longer sit at the captains table for team breakfasts, which means he will now be fourth in the chow-line instead of second. Lastly, of course, he will miss the first series against LSU, which is consistent with 75-year old SEC policies regarding player conduct on the eve of a big conference game. There is no tradition like those found in the SEC, especially when it involves player conduct and discipline! I expect him to spend those two-and-a-half minutes of the game considering what his actions mean to this team, and our goal of winning another National Title. No single player on this team is more important than the team, except for Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin, obviously, since they're the entire fucking offense, and I think Tony Joiner understands that.

Listen, I am as strict a disciplinarian as any head coach in the country <mumble> when it comes to chasing off the players recruited by the previous head coach that I don't like or that don't fit my system, 'cause I need those scholarships for the next two recruiting classes </mumble>. I think my track record on this matter speaks for itself."

It's funny. When this story broke, the UF fans were coming out of the woodworks to disparage Gainesville tow operators as crooks and scumbags. And yet here we have a tow lot operator who sounds like the fairest, most agreeable tow lot operator in history.

Shortly after Joiner's arrest, towing company owner Stan Forron said the player had arranged to pay the bill and pick up the car. But Forron said no one was around to take Joiner's money, so he must have thought it was OK to take the car and settle up later.

Remember after the Peterson car deal, a bunch of Okie St. fans went to the dealership trying to get the same deal? We need some FSU fans to try this out on this tow lot.
