Hey guys, is there anyway that I can add files to our collective downloadable "stash"? I have both the fiesta bowls on dvd and can rip them to my hard drive using dvdshrink (iso files). The files will be 4.7gig, but I think we've got some people on here who would be willing to wait for such a file, especially the ones with high speed. Let me know

I put up some directions on how to make torrents in the first post. If it isn't detailed enough lemme know.

In other news, I built my media center computer and it is the most amazing thing ever made in the history of man. It's basically like tivo but 1,030,493,406,679 times better (and no monthly fee).

I've heard if you have a cable modem, keeping it on leaves your cpu open to hackers. Is that true? If it isn't, I'll keep my CPU on 24/7. I already downloaded the Michigan game, took about four hours and I'm going to DL the Alamo Bowl as soon as I get the time.

Firewalls, firewalls, firewalls -- though you will need to set a port for an Azureus or similar client to poke through. (Add this frailty to the list of reasons why a trusted peer-to-peer or share-the-load network is advised -- and advertising this broadly is probably a case of be careful what you wish for).

SP2 on WinXP gives some rudimentary firewall protection. Other solutions cost $.

The one thing I most strongly advise if you are a 24/7 cable modem on operation is TURN WINDOWS MESSENGER OFF!!

That is in my opinion still one of the biggest loophole in the entire Windows system -- hope they ditch the worthless SOB in Longhorn.

I believe SP2 disables the Windows Messenger service by default.

As for BitTorrent, the ports being used are not in a range that a hacker would scan for. Actually, you can specify any old random port to use. Some clients will even randomize the port for every download.

Mmm,not when its installed into an existing SP1 system - don't know if the WM always off is standard on XP-SP2 as a totally fresh install.
Either way - ensure WM is off.

That's a good hint -- how do you randomnize through a firewall? -- More like a Computers and Technology question though.

On page 8 of this thread I posted an article that tells you how to change the port on Azureus and Yet ABC. It's a really good idea to change the port, not for security reasons, but because some ISPs restrict bandwidth on the standard bit torrent ports.

Of course randomizing the port would accomplish this, but it could be harder to set up on your router. Just using a non-standard port, say 16881 (or any other random number between 10000 and 50000), will definitely suffice.

We're off to a great start here and everyone is doing a great job of keeping seeding. As long as everyone remembers to keep their bit torrent software on for a few days after they're done downloading, this is going to be great! :biggrin:

If anyone has games stored in digital format (DVD, MPEG, AVI, etc) that they want to share but don't know how to, PM me and I'll help you set it up.

If any of you are sitting on games and already know how to seed them on thePirateBay.com, GET 'R DONE!

One thing we need to make sure we don't do is seed DVDs we bought from a retail store (or online). We need to stick to home recordings, like those made on a DVR. That way we should stay legal and not have any headaches with these torrents.

Yeah, I agree. I think rips of the 03 and 04 Fiesta Bowl DVD's are off limits for now.

Getting off topic here...does anyone with Windows Media Center 2005 know how to set the Recorder so it skips commercials? Can it do it? If not, is there any third party software that does?

I was considering doing that (I just got a Dell Media Computer), but my computer is upstairs and my TV is downstairs. Is it still possible to do? All I would have to do is buy the remote and the software. Thanks in advance.

Rocketman... check out my post in the Computers and Technology Forum about Media Center. I don't think you can set it to skip commercials but there are a few programs that will allow you to edit the DVR-MS file and then encode it o MPEG. TMPGEnc Xpress is the one I've been using.
