Game Thread tOSU at Illinois, Sat Oct 2, Noon ET, BTN

Have no idea why but Illinois is one of those darn teams that always finds a way to keep it a close game with the Bucks regardless of seperation in talent. Combined with the fact this is the first road game, special teams have been sketchy, and a team who can right many wrongs early in the season with a win..... I am liking the Bucks, 27-10.

This is the third time out of five games that Eric Collins and Chris Martin will be on the commentary crew for the Buckeyes.

I don't mind Charissa Thompson.

Although OSU won the previous two games, so I can't really complain too much about the commentary.

Collins tries, but Chris Martin always looks pissed off at the world whenever they do camera shots of him....

add in the fact that their field is usually windy as hell...so our passing game better be spot on or our run game better step up.

While there is indeed support for the assertion (17-10 in 2006, for example) there's also some pretty big blow outs over "bad Illinois" (30-0 last year, 40-2 in 2005). Seems to me, though, even the "close" ones there was never really a sense that Ohio State was in serious trouble (including the 2006 game). Obviously OSU was in trouble when they lost in '07, and I think 02 was a nail biter, but 2008's 30-20 didn't have me on the edge of my seat.... despite the close score in 06, the Buckeyes were in control for the entire game.

Just my thoughts

People often wonder why I refer to Illinois as our second biggest rivalry. They know about the Illibuck, but they seem to think of Illinois in the same category as Indiana and Purdue.

Traditionally Illinois qualifies as a rivalry game, although the changes in scheduling after State Penn joined the Big 10 have somewhat put a damper on it, as well as Ohio State's Dominance of the series since about 1930. Prior to Michigan becoming the regular season finale, Illinois was our season ending rivalry game.

I still remember Illinois blowing us out in the Shoe in 1999, and winning 5 in a row over us in the late 80s early 1990s.

Well I haven't followed Illinois too much but I thought their QB wasn't that great? Reading some of the posts here sounds like he's Vick2.0?

What's his story? does he have the talent to make us pay on the backend? I'm not worried about the run defense, but color me concerned about our pass D.

He has talent and natural ability, but he lacks experience - still extremely green. He's a good runner, but not a great passer at this point. He's probably not really a threat in this game, but he might be in a couple of years. The paradox of Illinois is they have a buttload of talent, but Zook is not really a good coach, except for maybe one game a year. (The annual "zooking" of a legitimate contender, or pretender, like michigan last year).

IRRATIONAL FEARS TUESDAY

I was traveling all day yesterday, so this feels like my Irrational Fears Monday, which for me makes it MORE IRRATIONALLY FEARFUL.

Illinois is 4th in the nation in net punting. WE'RE DEAD LAST. YES DEAD LAST. DID YOU HEAR ME THE FIRST TIME? NO? DEAD LAST!!!!! How can we possibly match up? I mean, this is the same team that had its OWN FUCKING TV SHOW a few years back.

But seriously, I think we're going to have a letdown on offense this week. Never let your guard down because a good Zooking is always around the corner. Plus they want their turtle back, yo. (Which they wouldn't get back this year anyway because its a stupid trophy.)

WE'RE DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!

We seem to have removed the punt from the playbook this year.

Yeah, Chris Martin's not bad, if you look past when he confuses Aaron Gant and Posey by claiming that Posey made a tackle on kickoff coverage. :shake:
Big Ten conference game with a noon kick.

I'll accept Eric Collins and Chris Martin and count my blessings we're not getting Pam Ward.

Not to mention that we had played them every season from 1914 through 2002 (89 straight seasons), until they went off our schedule for 2003 and 2004.
