On the D side... the run defense.. and the failure to deal with 88 TE is their issue. I have more issues with playcalling and offense execution. On the other hand, if you run your route and there is an insane amount of holding etc...
I don’t even care about the run defense. When we needed a stop the defense often gave it to us. Birm reported that Sawyer stated this was by far the best OL they’ve ever played against and honest I believe him.

This was the best thing to happen to us on defense. We played an OL that was elite with elite backs and a very good QB then only gave up 14 points.

Yes ND leaned on us a bit late but I think the sequence where we scored that quick touchdown really hurt our defense in terms of catching our wind. We were just never able to catch up after that physically.

Get. That. Fucking. W. I'm so proud of this team from top to bottom coming out with a win there. Had a really fun game watch party and woke up in my #15 jersey on my couch with my pup, no other way I want to spend a Saturday night in September. I'm going to go stream of consciousness on this game review at 6am MST.

Initial thoughts are that the coaches on both sides had an incredible game plan and the players didn't quite execute it at times, but they did when it mattered. I'm going to give extra credit to the defense, holy guacamole they played out of their minds. So many crucial stops when it mattered. That 4th down stop in the 3rd where Eich came flying over the top forcing Hartman to Styles and Ransom was epic.

On offense, we were just right there so many times, score could have been much higher. But we executed when it mattered. The first thing I'll say is thank the higher beings that we decided to bring the counter run with pulling linemen back! That play works so damn well and Henderson's big run was a testament to it. Fryar and M Jones pulling was poetry in motion (also huge credit to MH Jr on his block). Run that play more often please Hendo is a monster and damn he has wheels, so do what we can to create opportunities for that man.

The biggest thing I'm stoked about is that we mostly only rushed the front 4 and got enough pressure (with good coverage) to force bad throws against a really good QB. If we can replicate that, sky is the limit for this team.

Eich and Chambers dominated per the usual, but massive shout out to the secondary. Only negative is Simon, he's lost out there...if we put in another LB, it needs to be Hicks. The defense was overall seriously dominant in all phases though. In particular, Davison (#1) was outright out to cause problems and he did, there will be an individual post in his thread for that performance...man he has been a spark for our defense. He'll get a few penalties, but the aggression is worth it imo, though he needs to be a bit smarter on when to use itWe also just shut down Estime and that was a fantastic scheme to get that done, good job Knowles and company.

McCord has top-notch game recognition and really displayed it on that 3rd down throw to X Johnson in the 4th...you can say that is an easy throw, but most QBs would have been sacked not anticipating the blitz and throwing to where it came from. I get the "game manager" comments, but he's just smart with live situations and doesn't force it when it's not needed, that's a description of a great QB. McCord is legit guys.

Stover is so damn important to this offense and the team...him coming back is just unreal, heart and soul of the team on top his athletic ability. Some NFL team is going to be really lucky to pick him.

Bullshit penalty on Fryar for him giving that DE the business at the end of the 3rd, it's called football. He finished the block like he should. Costly "penalty" that shouldn't have been called. I give the refs a solid D-minus on this game.

Hats off to ND and Freeman though, they played really well and I think they'll have a really good season. That was a classic Midwestern sloberknocker that I think we all will appreciate even if the media wanted the points. I think both sides can be proud of their performance and in etching a piece of college football history in that game.

That was about as epic of a finish to a game that is possible. So glad we escaped with a win.

College football winners, losers in Week 4: Colorado hype takes a hit, Florida State passes big test

A loaded Week 4 slate with a slew of ranked matchups helped us separate some of the contenders from the pretenders

Winner: Ohio State

The Buckeyes appeared cooked facing third-and-19 with only 15 seconds remaining on the road against a feisty Notre Dame team. A loss in Notre Dame Stadium would have been Ohio State's first since 1936, a 7-2 decision in South Bend, Indiana. It almost certainly would have ended with Ohio State coach Ryan Day on the hot seat heading into a must-win game against rival Michigan later this season.

Instead, quarterback Kyle McCord came through with the throw of his life, finding wide receiver Emeka Egbuka for a 21-yard gain. Running back Chip Trayanum had the push of his life to get into the end zone as the clock ticked to one second. In the end, The Buckeyes are 4-0.

The dramatic win buys Day some much-needed goodwill heading into the Big Ten slate with a first-year starting quarterback. The Buckeyes shouldn't face any real challenges aside from the usual showdowns with Penn State and, of course, Michigan.

Storms knocked out power and fried internet hardware so had to watch from hotspots and get buffered like mad but, eventually, saw it all (I think).

It was text right out of the book on “How Ryan Day loses big games” right up to the end when it wasn’t. A win is a win, it was glorious and I enjoyed it.

The positives I think I saw:
McCord took a huge step forward.
The ancillary skill positions are very good and can make you pay for over indexing to MHJr
Henderson can still be that home run threat to keep defenses somewhat honest about the run.

From the Book on Day chapter 1:
The opponent can run on his defense and stop his run in short yardage.

Chapter 2: Keep an umbrella over his offense make it work down the field and it will sputter a lot.

Chapter 3: Keep it close late and they will flinch….almost happened but Freeman said “hold my beer”.

Was this just a case of Freeman being a worse coach than Day? Has a corner been turned? I have no idea, nor will anyone else but all that matters is winning and they did that.

That was an awesome game to watch.
And Day is a madman. That call to win the game was stuff of legend.
I have always taken Holtz the same way for 30 years. If he was on your side you love his commitment. If not you will find him to be an unbelievable pompous jerk.
But no can say listening to him butcher the English language isn’t entertaining.

I usually avoid hating on him bc for the better part of a decade, he was the only one to tell Mark May where to shove it.
And as an ND coach, we all know where he falls in these games.

Agree with most of this. Biggest complaint was the 2 stops on 3rd and 4th and short on the 2 occasions in the red zone. Run #3 into the middle of the line on third and then turn it over on 4th with an incomplete pass. Would have been better served by handing it to#19 twice down there I think. And running a jet sweep on 4th and less than 1 is James Franklin level dumb. Still don't understand Day's play calling in crunch time in a lot of instances. Last drive was a masterpiece of execution though.

The 1936 game that ND won in combeback fashion was labelled the "game of the century." Maybe this should be the "game of the (21st) century."
I know you’re just testing my old memory, but the 1935 game in C-bus was the one called the “game of the century”, where William Shakespeare threw the game-winning pass as time expired.

Last night finally returned that last-second-loss pain to South Bend, where it belongs.

And that, Folks, is why ND will not join the Big Ten. Right now they’d be facing games against Michigan and Penn State and then a CCG. Now they’re faced with the ACC. They still have a shot at the playoffs and they don’t have to share their NBC money.
Or share their expanded playoff money, which they’ll get close to half the time starting next year.
