I don't understand why they want the offense checking to the sideline every single play if Day supposedly trusts CJ. Does CJ just not have that play caller ability/skill at the line to diagnose and correctly call something himself? I think that's the root of the problem. They have to check to the coaches for nearly every play, and a lot of the time they don't seem to be in any real hurry to get it in (or the call takes too long to communicate), so by the time CJ actually can look up to check, it's too late. But still, look up and have some more urgency.
CJ wasn’t looking at the sideline for the play call on that delay. He was on the 2 yd line and looking into the defensive backfield. The coaches would’ve had to have been standing in the end zone.

The players were in position. The call was made. CJ has the option to change the call based on the defense. But he was still studying the defense when the play clock ran out.

A few plays earlier we saw Day on the sideline waving his arm in a circle, frantically urging CJ to get the play off. He barely got it off in time.
