tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I would be surprised if Jeff Greene does not see significant playing time, if not as a starter.

So with Philly Brown, Chris Fields and gone next year, whose gonna fill the WR spots? Unless D Smith has an incredible year, I feel like he will stay.

Here is the list of the WR we will have next year (Due to the fact we hardly have any Sr WRs, it’s gonna be a huge list). This is assuming that everyone stays.

Current Roster

· Devin Smith
· Evan Spencer
· Jalin Marshall
· Michael Thomas
· Dontre Wilson
· Corey Brown
· James Clark

· Devonte Butler
· Frank Epitropoulos
· Khaleed Franklin
· Jeff Greene
· Peter Gwilym
· Devlin Mcdaniel
· Kato Mitchell
· Brandon Ojikutu

Class of 2014

· Curtis Samuel
· Noah Brown
· Malik Hooker
· Terry Mclaurin
· Lonnie Johnson

I have the guys in red projected as starters for next year, and guys in blue with chance to get in some significant playing time. On that list, I think Noah could help us out and play the split-end. We need a big physical WR and he could fill that role. Either way, the speed on this roster is just insane. Samuel, Wilson, Clark, McLaurin, Marshall all run a 4.4.or faster.

I don't know too much about the other guys listed. I know Frank is a good talent and may see some action on special teams. Jeff Greene and his 6'5" frame can be put to use in red zone situations. If anyone else knows a bit more about some of the walk-ons and other guys, please insight me. :)

It looks like the top targets to fill out the remainder of the class (in not particular order) are:

1. CB Marshon Lattimore
2. S Erick Smith
3. LB Raekwon McMillan (OV: Oct. 26, Penn State)
4. OL Chad Mavety (OV: Nov. 23, Indiana)
5. OL Damian Prince
6. DT Thomas Holley

It would be nice to get Prince and Holley back on campus for an official visit in the coming months, although they both already visited over the summer.

If you land all of them, which seems plausible if not likely, that puts the class at 24.

Then you've got the long shot big fish that the staff is still in on that you make room for:

1. ATH JuJu Smith (OV: Sept. 28, Wisconsin)
2. WR Johnnie Dixon (OV: Sept. 28, Wisconsin)
3. TE Tyler Luatua (OV: Sept. 28, Wisconsin)
4. S Jamal Adams (OV: Oct. 26, Penn State)
5. DL Solomon Thomas

You've also got:

1. WR Tavis Rudolph (OV: Oct. 26, Penn State)
2. WR/TE Mike Gesicki
3. OL Alex Bookser

I'm not sure where exactly they stand in the class, but I would imagine they are Plan B guys at this point.

When Kiffin gets fired at USC that should help with the push for guys like JuJu Smith and Tyler Luatua, and when Mack Brown is fired from Texas that should help with the push for guys like Solomon Thomas and might even open the door for some other surprise Texas prospects (Jerrod Heard?).

It will be interesting.

In the 'top target' list, I think we land 4-5 of them. I feel like Holley, Lattimore, Smith and Mavety are planning on being Buckeyes. They just want to make sure, and are going through the process. At the same time, Lattimore could pull a fast one and end up at Bama. Prince is a toss up right now, and I would put him in the category of elite guys we MAY land. When it comes to Kwon, I feel that he really wants to with with Urban and staff, but he really doesn't want to be a Buckeye. He would rather be a gator or elephant or tiger. Wants to stay in the south, but just loves Urban and Co so it could go either way. A few months ago i would have penciled him in, but now I think he stays in the south, just a feeling. Primarily based in him saying he would have committed to Florida months ago if Urban was still there. Personally, I'd put my money on him at Clemson, similar upward trajectory as OSU, great head coach with a great attitude that plays fun and intense football like Urban, but in the South. I had a similar feeling with Vonn Bell last year, so who knows.

I think we'll land one of those 'big fish'. I don't think any of them have the Buckeyes as the team to beat, but odds are we'll snag one of them. Mack Brown or Kiffin getting the boot may help, but whoever replaces them may get some new lifeblood in recruiting. I think the best thing for other schools wanting to get elite Texas or Southern California players would be for Kiffin and Mack to not get fired, and to watch them continue to struggle. It's like Stoops coming into Kentucky with a new attitude and fresh schemes helped them recruit...until they lose to Western Kentucky.

OSU "upward trajectory"? Aside from the 6-7 2011 season glitch caused by TatGate, we've pretty much been near the top of college football since 2005. Clemson may be headed up towards the upper echelon, but we've already been there for quite a while...

We have been consistent top-10 for almost the entire BCS (14 years?). I can't complain about that. But almost all of that we haven't been a top-5 program (up for debate). Yes, I understand what you're saying, but Urban is (supposedly) bringing us from consistent top-10 to consistent top-5. ESecPN has been doing their best to keep us out of the top-5 by talking up the SEC and down the Big Ten. With Urban, they can't do that anymore. During our last game they said over and over again that we have 'SEC speed' and an 'SEC defense.' I like to think we have SEC speed and a B1G defense. So, though Clemson had to climb 10 stories, and we only had to take a single step, it is still an upward trajectory. :excited:
As far as recruiting goes we are on an upward trajectory, even though we were top-10 in the rankings for the BCS, we rarely recruited as a top-10 program.

Think again. Here's our final AP rankings for each year starting from 2002: 1, 4, 20, 4, 2, 5, 9, 5, 5, --, 3. That's 8 of 11 years finishing in the top 5, and if you discount 2011 it's 8 out of 10 years.

I don't think we can overstate how amazing that kind of consistency is. That is probably the most impressive thing that Tressel accomplished strictly in terms of his team's on the field achievements.

We have talented guys on roster who are not playing and may or may not transfer. We have guys who are never talked who you would expect to transfer. We have had the 2 career ending injuries of Griffin and Thomas. With all of this I think the class gets to 24.

No disrespect to E Smith but I'd love these 6 to finish: Prince, Kwon, Lattimore, Holley, Jamal Adams and Gesecki. More realistic would be to swap Prince and Adams for Mavety and Smith - 2 incredible plan B guys. I think the staff wants Gesicki pretty bad. Everything I have read is that he is a freak athlete and unique in his skill set compared to others in the class so I'd really like to see him on board. Others have mentioned the possibility of Hubbard at TE but who knows? If Gesicki lands elsewhere then personally I would love to land Solomon Thomas - I just can't see Luatua landing here.

It's amazing to be sitting on 18 very talented guys with so many more as real possibilities to finish out the class. If we land one of Prince/Mavety to go along with Kwon, Lattimore and Holley then you almost have to feel like any other spots would just be gravy.
