tOSU Recruiting Discussion

We're in on a number of DT's, but interest on the HS players' part has changed. We're not in Ewell's top 4, Aubrey Solomon's trending towards Alabama, Marvin Wilson was a longshot to begin with, etc. A true 3-technique DT is a real need in this class IMO, but numbers are short and the chances at this point arent great. I've got my fingers crossed that players' interest has waned because the staff isn't pursuing them like they were due to how our current players performed over the spring... but that's pure speculation on my part (and possibly wishful thinking). One to watch here is Jay Tufele out of Utah. I've not watched film on him so not sure if 3-tech or not, but he has yet to narrow things down

As far as Cam Akers goes, he's one of the guys, like Baron Browning, Najee Harris, DPJ, Tate Martell, Darnay Holmes, Marvin Wilson, Lamont Wade, Tyjon Lindsay, etc. that are guys you can't say no to if they want in. My thought is Sibley's gone, whether or not we have a guy to replace him, and Pitt (and Narduzzi) is the hot play right now. With Dunn done at the end of the season, we still have 3 great options at RB in the '17-'18 season with Mikey Weber, Curtis Samuel, and Antonio Williams (who had a surprisingly good spring for a guy who should have been still in HS), plus JK Dobbins. So IMHO, a 2nd RB in this class is a luxury, barring Curtis being our starting RB, putting up Zeke type of production, and leaving early for the league... all of which isn't likely

It all comes down to scholarship numbers. Wish we could take everyone, but we all gotta stay realistic. The staff are the only ones that truly know what the end number is gonna be at this point, and based on one of Urban's spring press conferences, I get the feeling they don't entirely know what that number is going to be either
Greatly appreciate all of your insight. But I personally just see a 2nd RB as more of an importance, especially Akers due to his talent and the fact that RBs usually seem to get nagging injuries and depth is needed. I remember unprecedented depth at RB at USC when they once brought in 3(maybe 4) RBs in one class and were down to 1 by mid season due to injury. I personally don't see Samuel playing enough in the RB position as he'll also be relied upon in the passing game due to his talent in space. That's where we need that off tackle type RB to smash opponents in the mouth. We currently have that in Weber, Dunn and Williams now. With Dunn gone after the season Dobbins will come in, but its hard to rely on a true frosh by himself, it wouldn't hurt to have another with a little more size. Just my .02, but your entire list makes sense. And I could see another DL making their way in if need be closer to NSD. But in this class you take all the talent possible and find room, IMO, regardless of position.

Excellent post @BuckTwenty. Pretty much my exact list. I'm penciling in both Grimes and Lindsey at WR. My only change is adding a DT but I share your sentiments on that end, seems like we'll only take another one if it's an elite prospect and numbers are slim.

Good stuff. I do think we fit the 3rd DT and 2nd RB in though. Most are now saying that the class will get to 20+ and we've seen these classes consistently end up bigger the next February than we were expecting in May. We've already had a couple scholarships open up this week with Schmidt and Felder (possibly ends up back at OSU in future, but we'll see) leaving. There will be others. And all the NFL guys.

I see RB as a bit more of a need than you do because Samuel has been practicing with the WRs all spring. Really think the Buckeyes want him in that Braxton Miller role the next year or two. Four seems like a perfect number for true RBs and to get there we need two in 2017. The way the Buckeyes backed off of Najee Harris and parted ways with Sibley, I think they feel really good about where they sit with Akers. I like the chances he's a Buckeye.

At DT, there are just so many guys with the Buckeyes in their top 3 or 4, that I'd be shocked if we don't get one more. Plus, I get the sense that a number of other DTs who the Buckeyes have been slow-playing lately would jump at a chance closer to signing day if things don't work out with the top targets (or one of those guys has a big senior year).

Are insiders predicting a 20+ class now? Wow.

Over 14 guys currently on the roster will have to leave/go to NFL and that isn't counting the 6 SR's.

That's 18% of the current (non SR) roster.

I just looked at this quickly so my numbers may be off by a few... We have 10 RS Jrs as well as the 6 Seniors that will be earning their degree. Plus 8 more Juniors and 10 more RS SO that will be eligible to leave. Thats 34 players that are draft eligible. From that list, I'm not looking at specific guys, but just to throw a few guesses as to how many had a decent career thus far and could reasonably leave after a good year, I see 18 as the low number for the class. 6 + 4 RS Jr + 3 Jr + 2 RS So, with another 1-2 RS Jr that will not have their scholarship extended (which I hate but is the reality). Then you've got 3-4 that would not continue to play or transfer due to getting passed over or want to be closer to home, plus hopefully none but potentially a few injuries. I could easily see this getting to 20-22. I think 19-20 is a really safe guess.

They were predicting 20 plus. More recently they've stopped going over 20, but it's unlikely to be much less than that.

When did Ohio State drop out of his top 4? The last update from him when he released a top 5 in late April, he said Ohio State was his leader.

Ohio State may not be as high on him as he is on them, but OSU not being in his top 4 is news to me. If they want him, they can get him.

So, in general, do we (royal we) / BPRT have a handle on who have offers v. OFFERS? Not necessarily to say that it's known 100%, but in general.

Reason I ask is that for the '17 class there has to be a ton of offers and only a few OFFERS out there. Wondering if it may help those of us unwashed masses (read: non *ricks) understand who the collective brain trust believes to be TARGETS v targets if the thread titles were noted as OFFER v offer.

Thoughts?

Tremendous question. I will give my assessment in just a moment as I get to some other BPRT things briefly.

Thanks. Just a thought and if it makes sense, it'd be appreciated... I'm sure.
Absolutely & it brings up a great point, especially with such a crunch in numbers several months away until NSD '17.
