tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Ok, so it is Friday and since the stellar '18 class is in the books and we know what the needs are for '19, I am ready to give my annual "Way to Early Guess at Our [insert year here] Recruiting Class":

QB: Grant Tisdale (looks like he is at the top of our board and he is all Buckeye if we want him imo)
RB: Noah Cain (will be a battle but I like where we are here...if not Cain, Hickman would be excellent here)
WR: Garrett Wilson
WR: Trey Knox
WR: Milton Wright
TE: Brayden Liebrock? (no idea here yet, imagine we take 1 TE though)
OL: Doug Nester
OL: Darnell Wright (matter of time imo)
OL: Zeke Correll (also a matter of time imo)
OL: Michael Tarquin (looking good here if he is a take)
OL: Harry Miller (UGA might pass us here with the momentum but we had a large lead at one point)
OL: Ryan Jacoby (not sure if this is an OFFER yet but if it is, he is in)
DE: Zach Harrison (the sooner, the better, this is a guy you build your class around)
DE: Cade Stover (listed as LB but I see him as a DE)
DE: Stephon Herron (one more bad year up north and I think you see the flip here)
DE: Noah Potter (I would take this kid in a heartbeat and I think he is an OFFER)
DT: Jowon Briggs/Tyler Davis (this is trending hard for ND but hopefully we can keep him in Ohio...Davis might be a Buckeye lean but it is early)
LB: Own Pappoe (looks like a reach right now, see my comments below...nobody else to put here yet)
LB: Keith McGuire (do not know our odds but again, nobody else to put here yet)
DB: Daxton Hill (will be a battle to get him out of Oklahoma but we are in good shape early)
DB: Josh Sanguinetti (nobody else to really put here but we are definitely in the thick of it)
DB: ? (we'll at least take 3 in this class imo...not sure who else yet)
ATH: Jaylin Simpson (we are right near the top, tough pull from Georgia though)
ATH: Ronnie Hickman (could be another DB, although he could be an explosive utility guy on offense...either way, he's a Buckeye)

- Good news is that the biggest position of need is definitely OL and we have a ton of top-notch talent where we are in the lead, or right there. I would not be shocked to see us get back into the mix for Dobbs, Harry Miller will be a battle for sure, and guys like Carroll, Putnam, Hudson, Truss, etc. are all in play. If we can lock down Nester, Wright and Correll, I think we can start getting selective and turn up the heat on the remaining 2-3 OL spots...that gives us two legit tackles and a great guy inside as a base. I think we are going to have at least 5 stud commitments on the OL and we need that.

- At WR, we are making up serious ground on Wease, who is one of the best in '19. I would love to see us somehow pull him and Wilson off. I think 4 WR's is not out of the question with how many we will be losing next year.

- At DE, I would love to see us make a run at Ani Izuchukwu, I think he is an elite talent. I see him staying south at this point but know we are in the thick of it. Brandon Smith from VA is another I would love to get in on. But if we just stay in Ohio for DE this year, a trio of Harrison, Stover and Potter would be just fine, although I know the staff will try to bring in one elite OOS DE.

- At DT, I would not be shocked to see us only take 1 DT and potentiall add another OL or DE. Not only did we get Vincent, Togiai and Jackson in '18, but I could either any of Tyreke Smith or Friday sliding down as well, both have that Dre'Mont Jones build coming out of HS. I think the staff has not really started to recruit this position in '19 other than Briggs so they could lock down the '18 haul first. I expect we see a lot of new names surface here soon.

- At LB, I would love to see us get Pappoe...at one point he said he will "100% commit to OSU" if he could...seems like all the SEC teams passed us though. It is going to be tough pulling any kid from Georgia in the near future. Much like DT, we have pulled in a ton of top notch talent in years past, so I do not see us needing more than 2 in '19 unless it is the right guys. Unless you count Stover, there is not really a single LB we have offered that seems to be in serious consideration. Again, expect a ton of names to pop up soon.

-At DB, there are a lot of offers but this needs sorted out quite a bit. No idea who we end up with here but I think we take at least 3, probably 4.

- Overall: I expect another good class but given the minimal movement on the '19 class, it is tough to tell. After tons of top 5 classes in a row, we might see a little slow down and I think it will be tough to match the '17/'18 classes in '19. Those classes were much more advanced at this stage...it is super early but given how early everything starts now, it is a little surprising that the only positions that seem like we have some clarity on is OL and DE. However, those are definitely the positions we need to load up on in '19 and really every other position falls way down the list of priority, so I am not worried in the slightest if we take care of OL and DE. Anyways, there is my VERY early guess at '19, which will inevitably be 75% wrong by the time we hit the end of April.

Thanks for the above. It helps me to get to know who the targets are and start watching the individual threads.

No problem. But to be frank, expect to see a ton of new targets soon and the list should shift. I see a ton of offers pouring in in the next 30 days. I feel good on the following being Buckeyes: Knox, Nester, Wright, Correll, Harrison, Stover, Potter and Hickman. That is 8 players total and Knox and Wright are no gimmes, although I think they are heavy leans. Should be interesting to watch the next couple months.

There have been so many WR offers, is it just to offer and figure out it later if the guys come and camp?

To me, each class should have around 4-5 for the OL and 2-3 and DE at WR. I see OL and DE hitting the higher number
of that range while WR exceeds it at 4. So, yes the WR group will be large. If you are able to land one fairly elite guy in each group it makes a major difference. I think that is an interesting thing to note. If you land a can't miss guy in a position group the need to overload that position group isn't as high. For instance when Nick Bosa, Chase Young and NPF come in for example it's fairly safe to count on them being a 2 year starter at a minimum.

OL and can't miss is kinda bold statement to me. To me OL is the one place where there is no such thing as "can't miss" I agree with you though .. 4-5 OL every year because its such a tough position to evaluate.

It's not just bold, it's the opposite. It's by far the hardest position to evaluate, involves recruiting monsters who beat up on little children, with physiques that usually have to be broken down and built back up, and skillsets that usually involve limited or zero pass protection proficiency. And in 1v1 situations in camp, they can't simulate real football and usually get toasted by their opposition. Compare that with WRs, DBs, RBs who get a lot of practice at their skillset early on.

4-5 only works if you can trim the fat regularly with transfers. Otherwise you're tying up 20 spots with a position room that will only yield 4-7 usable players (with a few more that help on kicks, though walkons and DL also help there).

Expect a big WR and OL class.

Yep. I see likely 3-4 WR (maybe one of those being an H-Back/Curtis Samuel type), 5-6 OL, and 4 DE's. Good news is that I like us to fill up a good bit of the spots at OL and DE pretty quick with Nester, Wright and Correll, then Harrison, Stover and Potter. Then you can just take a sniper approach for elite guys. Plenty of top WR's have us at or near the top as well.

Prolly time to start a thread:

IN NEED OF A GRANT
After all of the drama that unfolded with former quarterback commit Emory Jones, Ohio State is currently evaluating a number of different players and taking its time in finding its next signal caller.

Though Allen four-star quarterback Grant Tisdale is widely believed to be the staff's top target, but that didn't stop them from offering a scholarship to another Texas gunslinger on Tuesday afternoon in Houston St. Pius X four-star quarterback Grant Gunnell
