A LOOK AT WHERE OHIO STATE STANDS IN ITS SEARCH FOR A QUARTERBACK
As Ohio State continues its search for a quarterback, it’s become especially clear that this year’s crop of signal callers isn’t particularly deep — nor is there an elite prospect with a perfect blend of size, arm strength and athleticism that screams ‘must get’ prospect.
In fact, the Class of 2019 doesn’t have a single five-star quarterback.
There were three five-star signal callers last cycle in Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, Georgia’s Justin Fields and USC’s J.T. Daniels, each of whom was ranked among the Top 16 prospects nationally. For comparison’s sake, Oklahoma four-star commit Spencer Rattler leads this year’s batch of prospects at No. 41 overall.
“It’s the worst I’ve ever seen,” a scout told SB Nation’s Bud Elliott during the Elite 11 Finals earlier this month. “It’s like the position skipped a year.”
Head coach Urban Meyer and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Ryan Day have echoed those sentiments on numerous occasions, so it’s no surprise they’ve struggled to find a quarterback they actually like this cycle. The Buckeyes have been connected to several names as a result, but the staff was never fell in love with or pushed hard for a commitment.

Class is a little less than half full. Overall talent available across the board for '19 isn't loaded with elite guys. Given that, you have to be happy with who is already in the fold.
This is about the time in a class where I can easily rank most important realistic recruits that need to join. This is my rank in order of importance. If we are playing fantasy football this is my draft list on who is realistic:
1. Harrison - DE
2. Dobbs - OT
(slight gap in importance after these 2)
3. Mertz - QB
(slight gap in importance after him)
4, 5, 6 Any WR's on our board
(rather large gap in importance after these)
7 & 8 Correll - OG & Battle - S (really a toss up on importance at this point)
9. Davis - DT
10. Washington - CB
11. Young - ATH (LB or DE probably)
12. Allen - OT (he's a project but OT depth is needed...........and special powers)
That's 22. Not sure where class size ends up but this list was intended to rank importance more than anything and that diminishes after the first 15 players. To me if you land the first 3 guys and then just 2 WR's of the top 5 or 6 on the staffs board the rest of the class is gravy because you would be sitting at 15 commits and the major needs addressed. If I am Urban I am feeling good about landing at least 2 of the WR's so I am absolutely locked in on landing Harrison, Dobbs and Mertz.

I agree with this by and large. I would just put Darnell Wright at No. 2 right next to Dobbs...it seems to have trended away some, but I think that is mostly guess work because he has been pretty quiet, and I think we have a real shot there if the staff pursues hard (and I think they will). Bottom line is I expect them to knock the doors down for both Dobbs and Wright...you are very happy with one and ecstatic to get both if that dream scenario would arise.
Also, I do not think there is a huge gap on Correll. In fact, I might have him anywhere between 3-6. While we had high caliber of talent in 2018 with NPF, Wray and Jones, that is only 3 OL and potentially only one interior guy. Likewise, we only landed 3 OL in 2017 and Munford is an OT, leaving Meyers and Davis likely in the interior (and it seems the staff isn't comfortable with Meyers quite yet, but plenty of time there). 2017 was a large OL class, but Wohlabaugh and Gerald already gone (both interior OL) and Pridgeon was JUCO, so he is gone soon as well...that leaves only Micheal Jordan, who could be an early departure not this year but next. To me, Correll is an elite level interior OL, we need at least 5 OL in this class (preferably 6) and we need to keep him in Ohio. Aside from that, I see a huge drop off in talent for other realistic targets on the interior OL after Correll, so I see him as very important.
Particularly agree though that Mertz is a priority, very unknown commodity in Baldwin, Haskins could potentially go pro after this year with a huge season, and I have enormous hopes for Martell, but it remains to be seen if he is a college-level passer (I think he is, just need to see consistency at the next level).

Yeah, I just didn’t think Wright was realistic but either of him or Dobbs is fine. No way we land both.
And I agree Zeke is important but you gotta figure that Allen is in giving 5 on the OL, 2 inside guys and 3 outside. I realize I actually ranked him- but I figure he is in if we want him.
Also this again is ranked by importance so it is assuming you land one of the elite OTs already. If Allen is essentially in then after one of Wright or Dobbs you have an OL class of 5 already before Zeke. And I see Jacoby as an interior guy. So, Zeke is someone I really want but based on “must have” so there are at least 5 spots more important if Allen is in- Harrison, an OT, a QB (hopefully Mertz) and at least 2 if not 3 WRs. I’d personally want all those filled before Zeke if we are drafting.

Well, if Mertz really is shutting down his recruitment it makes things interesting. Our QB depth is just too thin and it’s a weak QB class.

I think Wright is still very much in the game, just lost a little ground. And I think Nester is a borderline elite OT...he can move inside if need be, but I see him as a tackle. Plus landing NPF last cycle was huge and I also think Wray screams RT to me. Another elite OT would be great, but I see Correll as one of the best OL on the board that we have left on the radar in the interior and we have had a ton of attrition on the interior. I guess I can see your point on interior OL in this specific class with Miller and Jacoby on board, those are two great gets.
At WR, I know we lose a ton of guys this year on our roster and need to stock up, but we did bring 4-5 WR's in last class with Babb, Blue Smith, Olave, Brown and Gill. Plus there are a TON of really good WR prospects that I think we can pick and choose there. We already have who I feel is the best WR in the '19 class in Garrett Wilson and one of the most explosive WR's in the nation in Jameson Williams is right around the corner imo. I think Marcus Washington could be up soon as well. Then I think any of David Bell, Trey Knox, Milton Wright, etc. could be in easily if the staff pursues hard. Plus Hickman may wind up at WR as well, though I think he is a CB.
So I guess my stance is that we need another interior OL and there isn't much on the radar past Correll, whereas I don't see us having any issues getting 4-5 elite-very good WR's.

Hunter wasn't a priority for Ohio State but certainly could have played his way into contention with a big senior year. That could still happen.
Nothing but respect for Hodges, but there's a reason "don't count your chickens before they hatch" is one of the world's most famous lessons. Ain't nothing been signed yet.

I don’t get it. Ohio State just took a guy that they wanted and Purdue would absolutely love to have. Purdue came back and took a guy who Ohio State is looking elsewhere at the moment. There is a thread with bananas for Young but a thread on Hunter can’t even be found. Reality much?
Edit: of course, things can change. Maybe after this upcoming season, Ohio State comes after this young man. Until then, what exactly have you done, Purdue (aside from taking a shot at the best team in the B1G from your perch as third best team in Indiana?)

Ohio State just announced this morning that Friday Night Lights will be THIS Friday, June 22nd (11W)
I wish they would have let the public know about this earlier than they have, especially with moving it up 4-5 weeks than they have had it in the past... I have family and friends that come out of town for this every year and they'll likely not be able to attend this year with it being announced last minute
