tOSU Recruiting Discussion

There were tons of misses under Urban too. The only difference now is the philosophy of investing all of their time and resources into a smaller pool of recruits, which doesn’t allow them to circle back on guys like Urban did.

I’m not really a fan of it, but I’m not paid big bucks to come up with recruiting strategies.
Just asking, but do you think that NIL has caused coaches to tighten up on the offers? And also make the last minute flips harder as well?

A former 4star who has an off season in a college program is still a heck of a fall back.
Not saying he’s going to be a guaranteed All American, but could we say the same about KVA?
So are you saying that transfers are fall backs?

This particular one obviously is. Justin Fields certainly was not. Like most things, truth lies somewhere in the middle.

The macro point, as far as what I was commenting on, is that it’s about the body of work. Knowles’ coaches have had some recruiting misses both last cycle and now, so far, in this one. His on the field product was hot garbage when it mattered. He’s going to be lit up on the internet when stuff like the KVA recruiting saga happen.

Notice that no one is calling out Brian Hartline for anything.

It’s just the way things are. I’m surprised by people being upset about it.

Nah. I would think that it would do the opposite due to the, perceived or real, volatility.

If coaches believe anything can and will happen due to NIL, it only makes the most sense to cast a wider net. But again, I don’t make recruiting strategies for a living.

Last minute flips would seem like it could go either way. Some targets may choose to go elsewhere at the last minute and all of a sudden some NIL collective has more money left than anticipated and decided to up the ante on a top recruit committed somewhere else.

What you're saying makes sense.
And no, Hartline can't be called out because he's landing the best WRs in the country and putting them in the NFL. But a guy like Walton and Eliano have been called out like crazy. And the 2023 DB class was VERY good! But fans lament on missing out on: AJ Harris, Kayin Lee, Toviano, Cormani McClain, Caleb Downs, and Dijon Johnson. Walton and Eliano landed some very talented DBs in the Portal along with the HS recruits.

But in the end I get your big point, that OSU shouldn't have to land Plan B guys. But I think KVA and Lightfoot are outlier examples that can be overcome. On a macro level, it would be an issue if they can't get their top of the board guys. Knowles and Company's on field product has to step up in the biggest games this season in order to feel more confident in the recruiting battles. Because UGA and Bama don't seem intimidated recruiting against OSU on the defensive side. So to combat that, beating them on the field needs to happen this season

Definitely agree that Lightfoot and KVA are not the end of the world to miss on even though we looked like the pick. However, now we need to pretty much land every top guy at positions of need to keep up with UGA, Bama etc, meaning we need Stewart, Houston, Bolden and Scott unless we land a big upset elsewhere on defense. And my guess would be we go about 50% on that slate (Houston and Scott)... obviously I hope I'm wrong there. Given that it's late July, I'm hoping we have some names on the board as backup options.

I may have missed the post, but any news on the NW transfer?
No decision has been made publicly, but he did visit and Kentucky seems to be the main contender. I haven't really haven't seen enough information to know if he even has an offer from us and if so, how hard we are pursuing him. I think he would be a good addition given that we only had Reese in '23, and then Stover and Pierce in '24 (I think that is the LB class for '24 btw unless someone emerges late in the game). Even though the amount of LBs needed in Knowles' defense has gone down, we still need some depth there...fortunately we had Eich and Chambers healthy for the last 2 years, but that is far from a guarantee.

Should have a decision soon though, he needs to report to fall camp somewhere soon I would imagine.

So holistically, we have a very good class on paper for '24 currently in terms of firepower and there is plenty of time to round it out. We addressed a major need at CB with West and Scott, those were essential. However, we have to get an elite OT (I only see Baker right now being a viable candidate) and at least one elite DE (I see Houston as the only viable candidate right now after missing on Stewart), but we really need 2 quality DE's in this class.

I haven't been shy in saying Bolden may be the most talented kid in the '24 class overall, there just isn't quite the same amount of need as we have at OT and DE. So to me at this point, all in on Baker and Houston , then concern levels go down tremendously imo.

Got a feeling 2 or 3 years from now we're going to be saying what a steal it was getting this kid to Columbus as a secondary choice or "fall back" if you will. Kids that have skill and hard work ethic are hidden gems for us over our history. I could see another one here.

Basically the same as getting Kingston just a year early, in my opinion. Kid was at NW too so he should have the goods in the classroom too.
