Portland is on the edge (:lol:) of totality at 99%. I'm fine with that. My in-laws however are eclipse chasers and have had this marked on their calendar for years. So, most of the extended family will be heading out to a spot they secured in the high desert for almost a week (a 2-3 day traffic jam is expected along the path of totality).

Watching just the logistical plan unfold has been fascinating (it cuts almost a 500 mile path across Oregon--much of which is fairly remote): mobile cell phone towers, pre-positioning emergency and wildland fire crews, mobilizing the National Guard, importing every available porta-potty in the west...The circus of a million tourists pouring in may damn well be more entertaing than the eclipse itself!
You just know that there will be cars getting abandoned on highways, like the Atlanta snowstorm a few years back, air drops of bottled water, people bitching about no shitters available, gas shortages.

I could come to your house, and after its over we could drive out there to point and laugh at them and not give them any water that they ran out of 2 days ago.
Fuck that. The whole reason I'm not joining 20+ family and friends in an overcrowded cabin for 4 days is so I can have the house to myself--and laugh at the people stuck on two lane roads in the desert in August. is that bad?

What are these shi theads going to do when they get out there and realize they have no phone service?
:rofl::rofl:
Oh the humanity.

I'll hand it to the state--they've planned as about as well as could be expected. Mobile cell towers have been placed in Madras (a small crossroads town in central OR) that is expected to bear a lot of the tourist weight (normally an hour drive from Portland). Even so they're asking people only use phones for emergencies. Yeah, right!

Nope. That's why I'd have a grill, cooler and generator ready to go. In my back yard.

What did they jack up the price of a condo in Sun Valley to? It has been ridiculous here.

I haven't looked but it is absolutely insane. Last I heard, people were renting out non-exclusive rights to sit in their lawns for $500 a pop. I heard this when I was backpacking up in Stanely and didn't believe it, but now I do. The hype is growing to unreasonable levels. That being said, I am excited to see it.

This was Wednesday--30 mile long line of traffic. Yesterday it was down to 15 miles. This is caused by 30,000 people attending a neo-hippie music/eclipse festival at a remote ranch in central OR. This is going through the small town of Prineville (10k). Last stop for gas and beer (no weed shops though--most small OR towns banned them)..
