Just got back from MWTC out near Bridgeport, CA. The Toiyabe National Forest seems like a pretty neat place although we didn't really traverse too far in. Would definitely consider going back on my own terms rather than to conduct military training.
MWTC Bridgeport. I remember that place. We went up there for two weeks. It was snowing in June. Can't remember the name of the mountain we humped, it was named by its elevation.

Scotland has good wisky and people. Belgium has the beer. And France has great pastry's and ham/cheese concoctions... can you tell I'm a foodie :) Probably why I wasn't much of a fan of London or Amsterdam (generally crappy food compared to countries close by).

Except that it's not hyperbole. New Orleans is a more frequent entry on 'most dangerous cities in the world'.

Once you get outside the French Quarter & the Central Business District, New Orleans is as bad as any [Mark May] hole I've been to in the developing world.

I can't tell you how far off base this is. If you look at crime maps in New Orleans, you'll see that most crime actually occurs in the French quarter. Most of this is petty theft and various crimes fueled by alcohol. That said, I've never felt unsafe in the quarter. Locals would scoff at anyone who tries to assert that the French quarter is safer than the garden district or uptown (where Tulane is located).

It's true that New Orleans has a homicide problem right now, but let's be honest: most of this is unfortunately perpetrated by and against young black men in gang and drug related incidents in certain parts of town. No one would say you shouldn't visit Chicago because of what is happening on the south side of the city.

The last time I was in New Orleans (last fall), I did a different neighborhood every day and night. The French Quarter, the Marigny and Frenchman Street, the Bywater, Uptown, Mid-city, the central business district and even walked out to treme for a soul food lunch. I've never had an issue in New Orleans and usually walk most places or use the trolley.

Don't miss New Orleans. It's our most culturally significant city with great music, museums, architecture, AND food!

Best place internationally: Anywhere in Switzerland, but if I had to give a city the title it'd be Lucerne. My best memory in life to date is smoking a Cuban Cohiba on a bench with Lake Lucerne in front of me and the Alps beyond that...I'm usually the type to never watch the same movie twice, visit the same place twice, etc. but one of my only life dreams is to get back there and do that again. A second place goes to the square in Florence, Italy....Piazza della Signoria. When night hits and the square lights up and there are classical groups playing everywhere, very cool.

In the US....I love the Hartford/Windsor area in Connecticut, love the architecture style, the tobacco farms, the history....such a cool area. And any area along the coast of Cali, Pismo Beach being one of my favorites.

I tend to go to the Sierras a lot, enough to know where many truck ads are shot by just looking at the background. That is my favorite place in the U.S. Anything you want is there. I have done trad climbs in Yosemite and Tahoe (no, I am not anywhere close to Alex Honnold), backpacking, boating (Tahoe), etc. Mount Whitney's Mountaineers Route is a fun little hike.

Here is my travel map:
Black - Done without parents (obviously have gone over many of the routes as family vacations growing up)
Dotted Black - With parents when I was not old enough to drive
Blue - Travel booked!

That's an awesome map, and I would have killed to seen that much of the states.. much have been a great time, and I love exploring by car too, in Europe you can get quite far, and to many countries withing 8-10 hours

Iceland. There is no place in the world like it. Period.

I could imagine that, have only been to the Reykjavic airport and didn't see anything else, but would like to take a trip there though! What did you see on Iceland??

I loved Belgium as well, did you visit any places that were especially great?

I've been fortunate to travel a fair amount. Some places fairly touristy and some pretty remote or exotic. That said, when I get lost on my Polaris in the deer lease in the hills, that's actually about as good as it gets. So I'm an advocate for whoever said to got lost/get remote.
