Tressel vs Carr - Who Is More Respected?

I can't really find something here that I can agree with, other than scUM had the better team in '01.
Carr had a better team than our 14-0 NC team in '02?
As far as putting a "90's" on them, Coach T is halfway there!

Hmmmmm. I was never that impressed with the talent on the NC team. I was VERY impressed by the leadership and the determination, especially the seniors. A team of over achievers IMO and in no way a match for this year's team or the 97 Rose Bowl team on paper, but if the game came down to heart, they won it every time.

Not close to tOSU now? Umm they are pre-season top 3 everywhere, and were number 2 last year in the Game (dont remember talks of rematch??).. dosen't get much closer or much 'now'er than that.

One, the ranking is based on players that signed on up to 5 years ago, I would think the general opinion of the coaches has changed a bit since then.

Two, a preseason ranking holds no water in my mind. Let's see where scum is after they lose the last two games of the year (based on historical evidence).

I've lurked on this site for a year and your post has caused me to register and respond.

Further, while on a coaching level, Tressel has been superior as of late, do not forget that Lloyd started off 10-1 versus top 10 opponents and won a MNC. Carr might be chastised for a lot of things, but to even think one of them deals with his character issues with players is ludicrous. The only people he treats poorly are the media and then they spin stories against him.

Finally, back on topic, great pick up on Goebel. Kid will be a stud in both run protection and he has the athleticism to pressure the quarterback.

Having my first post edited by a mod is not the best way to start off my entrance to this message board :-).

I just wanted to say Carr doesn't have Christian values, since he is Jewish.

EDIT: Split from Garrett Goebel thread and merged here.

Well, I think that Jews (or anyone, really) can also have "Christian" values. We generally speak of the United States as being founded on "Judeo-Christian principles", so it's not like the two religions are miles apart in their respective value systems.

But this is a topic best left for another thread....

Just in fairness. Judaism and Christianity have the same roots! And pretty much the same "values".

Based on historical evidence? So pre-season rankings don't matter to you, but you'll pull the scUM/ND fan angle of history because we've taken it to them the last few years (not all that historical)? bottom line is, scUM has been "weak" the last few years but they are a traditonal power, and last year returned to their normal selves (makes me want to puke :))

It definatley has changed in the last 5 years.. that means it's right on the fringe of the national title game (our 2002 game that is, and the MoC situation) and it means people like urban meyer are ranked probably below where they should be.

My point was looking at it from a recruits perspective, I don't see how carr and scum holds up favorably against Tressel and tOSU in todays conditions. It's my opinion only. I don't necessarily disrespect carr or scum as they are a fine program (Just not that close to tOSU right now).

Well, I would go ask a scUM commit that question, they are still landing big time recruits or they would not be number #2 last year going into their last game. They are still respected nationally, probably get more respect than we do which is just shit.. but the clarett scandal didn't help us at all.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, i look at scUM with the upmost respect (and disgust) and can easily see why a recruit would want to go play for a coach carr. one thing tressel doesn't do that a joe pa or a carr does do, is get into a refs head (at least from my perspective) but at the same time i really love tressels' calmness and posture, a true general. And when JT does get upset, im sure it motivates the guys even more since its a rarity on Saturdays.

Coaches Ratings

Just wanted to mention that the ratings of the coaches are based on very small sample sizes and therefore highly suspect. There were only 10 respondents rating Coach Carr, and only 14 players rating Coach Tressel. There is no way you can draw valid conlusions about how most players see either coach based on these small samples. It would only take one discontented respondent to totally skew the results.

The defense was full of studs and so was the special teams. Our offense was respectable when Clarett was healthy. I don't know how 2002 scUM was even comparable to tOSU. Just look at the recent NFL drafts. That '02 ended up producing more NFL draft picks than Miami.

Actually, I don't think that's right . . . and I looked into it out of curiosity because it didn't seem right. His UM bio and his wiki bio list him as having been inducted into a Jewish sports Hall of Fame, but the sites for both the national and international ones don't list him. I also can't find anything else that references his religion, and I'd guess that the media would have made something of his being Jewish at some point if he was. I think some Jewish student in the UM sports info. department might have slipped a little joke into Lloyd's bio. that subsequently got picked up by Wiki.
