Trey DePriest (former LB Alabama)

This feels like Jordan Hicks-hangover.

I don't claim to be a talent evaluator but his film is impressive as is all the buzz and excitement over Trey. I believe Tress will pull out all the stops to bring this young man to tOSU. I'm feeling optimistic (just a feeling) but we're still a ways off from the final word.

If anything, it's great to see how passionate OSU fans are about everything our school is and does. Just thinking of DePriest on one side of the field and Brax on the other gives me goosebumps!

:oh:

Scout $ - Trey DePriest In No Hurry
By Dave Berk
Posted Feb 11, 2010

DePriest was thoroughly
impressed with 'Bama after spending an entire weekend there awhile back... The media & fan attention has been more than he expected but he's working with his coaches to manage it... He'll be pretty busy with basketball & baseball for the next few months so there's no plans for anymore visits right now... No favorites or timetable given...

2011 linebackers

When I first saw Trey DePriest he did not leap out at me. He was all over the field but too often he was making plays downfield and he was a drag down tackler. Where he is now is what has me excited about him. He is getting better at an accelerated pace. Fans started talking about DePriest when things started looking bad with Hicks. I remember thinking that this is not a kid who is going to make up for losing Hicks. I still rate Hicks the better player but the film I have seen from DePriest's junior year shows me a player that at least belongs in the conversation. I see a player who is just as good at blitzing as Hicks, and that is saying something. Some linebackers just have the timing down. I see a player who reads the game so well and he has become a really strong tackler. I give Hicks the edge now. At the rate DePriest is improving that might change.

I know someone is going to ask me which is best. These kids are so good that I would call them 1a, 1b and 1c. I would probably pick DePriest. Vaughters is the fastest and most explosive but I don't like his lack of reps at linebacker, particularly the fact that he has spent so little time in coverage. Thomas is such a specimen but he reminds me of Sergio Kindle and Chris Martin, the top twenty national recruit from this year, both tall high school linebackers. Kindle is headed to the NFL as a defensive end and Martin is no longer listed by anyone as an LB. I would take Thomas and Vaughters as athletes and as football players but I would take DePriest as a linebacker.

Scout $ - Another Offer for DePriest
By Sonny Shipp
TigerSportsDigest.com

DePriest was surprised to receive an offer from LSU in the mail on Monday... He knows the Tigers have been a championship program lately but he's just starting to learn more about the program... He'll have no worries about leaving home as long as he can find the school that is the right fit for him...

Rivals $ - Video: DePriest hunts them down
03/12/2010 by Rivals.com

Clips of him on offense & special
teams... There's a few shots of him laying a guy out on a block... Mostly him running the ball as a TB or wildcat QB... Shows he has good speed & he's a physical player... I like his hips in traffic, good change of direction & can pick his way through it... I don't think he'll be confused with an elite TB but you can see his athleticism & toughness...

This is a link to the podcast from Sam Webb's Daily Recruiting Roundup on the morning show on WTKA. There is mention of DePriest contacting Michigan coaches if you care to listen. This could be Sam Webb spin. Then again maybe not. I am a Michigan fan but I do know how Sam Webb delivers information.

Sports Talk 1050 WTKA - The Unofficial Voice of University of Michigan Sports

It starts off talking about AJ Jordan from Trottwood, then it's hijacked by their Michigan State alum boss because the cohost lost a bet yesterday because he went to Maryland, DePriest discussion starts at about the 3:40 mark. This link is to Part "A". If you choose to listen to Part "B", you have to go into the Michigan Insider menu.

I do too. Sam is a good guy and seems to be well liked by recruits and fans.

I also realize he works for gbw and his content isn't very useful for non-um fans. He gets content and answers that they want to read. There's nothing wrong with that, gary housteau was a similar type of staff member for bucknuts.

However, if you want to get a feel for how other teams factor into the things talked about in that article, then Sam's articles won't be very useful.

You tend to hear the portion of the topic that favors Michigan, but usually the competing teams are largely or entirely ignored. It makes sense, he works for multiple home media entities, not for a national network. However it greatly hurts the impact of the quotes.

Trey DePriest (David De Pas photo)
The offers keep piling up for nationally recruited linebacker Trey DePriest (Springfield, Ohio/Springfield).

Not that it really matters anymore.

Springfield coach John Cupps told CrimsonConfidential.com Friday morning that LSU, Arizona, Nebraska and Wisconsin are some of the bigger names that have recently offered, pushing the total number of offers to well over 22.

"I think it's too late for all of those -- except maybe LSU," Cupps said. "Trey hasn't come out and named a favorite, but I think his two leaders right now are Alabama and Ohio State."

Why the Crimson Tide and Buckeyes?

"Obviously, Ohio State is in the picture because we live in Ohio, and it's state law to be an Ohio State fan if you live in Ohio," Cupps said, tongue-in-cheek. "No, really, Ohio State has done a good job recruiting him, and it's just an hour-and-a-half away."

Of course, Alabama is much farther away. But, as Cupps pointed out, Sal Sunseri, the assistant coach recruiting DePriest to Alabama, is the Tide's trump card.

"He's doing a great job with Trey," Cupps said. "I wouldn't say he's in constant contact with Trey, but he keeps in touch with him and us coaches on a regular basis."
