Rivals High - Amid the grieving, a rare act of sportsmanship

IMO, this could be a new thread all on its own.

Or it could be in the A-Rod admitting steroids thread. Mainly because A-Rod using the "I was young and stupid" defense (what was he at the time, 23 or 24) doesn't even come close to stacking up to what a young (17 or 18 years old) high school basketball player did by intentionally missing those free throws.

That story, and the one last year about the two members of a girls softball team who carried the opposing team hitter around the bases after she had hit a home run and tore her knee while rounding first base, show that fortunately there still are young kids who know what sportsmanship is.

I read this article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer a few days ago, and it confirmed what probably the majority of fans feel about High School athletics that frequent here.

Through the tears that were welling up in my eyes as I read this on a break in front of co-workers in the lunchroom, everything just started to make sense. The "Game" as we like to call it, mirrors nothing in comparison to those who play it, coach it, or simply love it. Let me ask you this, especially for fans in NEO or any other area of the country with lousy weather. What exactly were YOU doing going to that High School football game last November when it was 35 degrees and pouring down rain to watch two 3-6 teams playing against each other? Does anyone really care about a couple teams on the hardwood in February that are "one and out's" in the Sectionals?

A story like this is one that is almost "made for the movies" re-affirms why High School stadiums and gyms are packed all the time for games that may mean nothing to anyone on the outside. It's pure, it's simple, and its about the "Sportsmanship." There are probably a few dickheads out there that will read this article and think that the opposing Coach was wrong in instructing his player to miss the free-throws as a "loophole" around the rules. To THAT I say "CENSORED" YOU!! I wish that I was at that game, because I feel kinda cheated in a way. This was a game where every person in attendance that night walked away with something that could make them a "better-person."

I really wish that a few of our over-paid Professional Athletes could look at a story like this and put things into prospective. They may be the one's that pack stadiums and sell millions of $$'s in merchandise, but have absolutely NOTHING on the $40,000 a year Coach that realizes that winning or getting filthy rich isn't aways the most important thing in life.

Peace.
