Jim Harbaugh seems to always rave about meritocracy and competition among his players.

So, does the same apply to him and his staff? I'm guessing he isn't refusing half of his salary, since he hasn't really earned it, right? I'm not even sure I'd list him in the top half the conference as far as coaches go..... (Urb, Dantonio, Franklin, Chryst, Fitzgerald, Frost, Ferentz........)

I hope Rainman kept Shae in the loop on this, or she might be pissed.

Michigan just picked up their 5th OL recruit, and the fans are responding with accolades such as...

I'm no expert on the film but he is big, great attitude and the coaches like him.

Looks like a perfect future RG to me. Get a couple years in to learn the playbook, work on endurance, and figure out pass protection.

He's got a nice offer sheet, seems really competitive.

His rankings range from middling to high three-star,

It's the 5th OL recruit, our 3rd recruit from Ohio and Warriner's 3rd recruit.

He is indeed their 5th OL recruit. As the 489th rated recruit nationally he joins #s 128, 289, 381 and 588. Give them all a couple of years to learn the playbook and wok on endurance and they will turn the B1G standings upside down. Of course, that will still make them 4th in the division.

Worthy of note is that the 3 Warriner recruits are the lowest rated of the 5. (In other words none of the 388 best recruits in the nation have said yes to Ed.) Turning the program around on a dime I tell ya.

Part of me hopes Warriner is doing us solid as an inside job. Not that we need it... but alls fair in war.

Warinner is a good coach and might actually prove successful at building a decent OLine at scUM. However, it won't be done in a year or two - at least not with the "talent" they currently have and are currently recruiting. If Jimbo produces another whole milk shart (through silk, mind you) this season, like the one he blew last year, he could very well be out the door, meaning Warinner will likely be gone with him.

Pivotal season in AA for a lot of reasons.

Can they fire him though? It's easy to say he's on the hot seat... but I think it will take at least 5 years of failure for them to finally get around to it. Even then I could see it dragging on provided they're going to 3rd tier bowl games.
Disclaimer: A Harbaugh meltdown would speed up the process, and that's a very realistic possibility.

I hate to be the one to spoil the party, but I seem to remember a coach who went 16-9-2 in his first three seasons and then won a national championship in year four.

That coach was Woody Hayes.

Now Jim Harbaugh is no Woody Hayes, but there's nothing magical about the three-year window. During the same time frame you cited, Jimbo Fisher won a national title in his 4th year at Florida State; Phil Fulmer in his 7th year at Tennessee; Mack Brown in his 8th year at Texas; and Dabo Swinney in his 9th year at Clemson. It took Bobby Bowden 18 years to win a championship at Florida State and Joe Paterno 17 years to win one at Penn State.

With that being said ... Fuck Michigan!

Yea but Vince Young isn't walking through that door. He's a weirdo recruiting Michigan; not an elder statesman recruiting Texas.

I was thinking about this myself awhile back.
Even in division, he can't hold a candle to Urban, can't recruit with Franklin, can't coach talent up like Dantonio ... so he's better than 3 glorified assistants at perennial whipping boys Maryland, Rutgers, and Indiana?

We may not need Warriner to do an inside job. All we may need is for Warriner to be Warriner. My take on Warriner is that he was an absolute wizard coaching up the players he had. But I think the following was also true

1) Warriner is an indifferent recruiter. Even with the Meyer/Pantoni recruiting program behind him, OSU's ability to bring in top rated OL prospects was very limited. Only Decker, Jones and Prince could be consider highly rated prospects and Decker would have been a Buckeye from the start if Bollman would have offered him. In 2 plus years, of not being directly responsible of the OL, OSU has signed Davis, Myers, Petit-Frere, M. Wray and have commitments from Miller and J. Wray.

2) Warriner is a bad evaluator of high school offensive lineman. He will push for at least 1 lineman every year that will never play a down. Gardner and Schmidt are examples.

SCUM does not have a great recruiting infrastructure. Warriner will improve the OL. But I am not sure they will be elite because they will not get the talent to be elite.

Nothing captures the scUM fan experience better. Every year, they believe... every year, they end up flat on their backs

I dunno....that agony of defeat guy is a pretty good allegory

Every summer they come screaming down that hill all full of hype and then, subtly at first, thing start to go very, very wrong and when you hate them as we do, the human rag doll finish is fucking GLORIOUS.
