I just recently read the book "Blind Man's Bluff" which deals with U.S. submarine espinage mostly during the cold war. A real interesting read that reveals some of the topic secret missions, accidents, etc. that took place during this time. Stuff like this accident happens more than what people realize, and even more so in years past.

yep, the thing that surprised me is how many times shots were fired during the cold war.
