UF OL Ronnie "Taz" Wilson (official thread)

Run defense soft vs. Auburn
Dave Curtis
Sentinel Staff Writer

October 19, 2006

A first glance at Saturday night shows Florida's defense played great again. Holding the homestanding Tigers without a touchdown for 60 minutes, after all, seems a description any defense would take.

But junior MLB Brandon Siler knows things were far from great at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Led by speedy TBs Brad Lester and Kenny Irons, Auburn ran for 133 yards against the Gators, helping AU to a 27-17 win.

"We had a couple slips in the gaps, some missed assignments," Siler said. "Some missed assignments. We lost the edge a couple times. They're things we've got to correct."

The errors are atypical, especially since the season opener, when Southern Miss managed 119 yards. No team had cracked the century mark since, highlighted by Tennessee's woeful 11 yards in a 21-20 UF victory in Knoxville.

Those past performances, which leave the Gators with the nation's fifth best rushing defense.

"If (the mistakes) had been happening, I Tennessee would have had a problem running the ball," Siler said. I don't think anyone would have a problem running the ball on us."

******** Coach Urban Meyer said Wednesday that true freshman Percy Harvin's enthusiasm for football hampered his recovery from a high ankle sprain.

Several times, Meyer said, he'd watch head strength and conditioning coach Mickey Marotti yank Harvin off the practice field to ensure he rested the injury. At full strength Saturday for the first time in a month, Harvin carried five times for 66 yards.

"That kid wants to compete," Meyer said. "And it probably set him back because he kept going and going and going and going."

Meyer still high on guard Wilson

Despite a rough game Saturday night, Meyer still has high hopes for G Ronnie Wilson's career as a Gator. "He's going to one of the best lineman ever to play here," Meyer said. "That's how much talent he has." ..... The SEC warned Auburn for playing recorded music through a computerized sound system during Saturday night's game with Florida. The practice breaks conference rules, and a second violation would carry a $5,000 fine. ... Meyer singled out freshman defensive end Lawrence Marsh for his strong efforts as part of the scout team.

Changing of the guard?

While redshirt freshman guard Ronnie Wilson is back from an ankle injury he suffered in the off-season, he has yet to oust left guard Jim Tartt from his starting spot.

Tartt unnecessarily tackled an Auburn player from behind in the end zoneSaturday, giving Auburn a costly safety, but Meyer said Wilson didn't play well, either.

"He will be the first one to tell you that," Meyer said. "He is going to be one of the best linemen to ever play here, I think. That is how much talent he has. But he has a long way to go."

Thanks for checking in, Taz. Congrats on the SEC Championship.

Here's hoping for a great game in Glendale, but we'll have to hope for a different final score than what you're looking for.

What more can be said about Ronnie? He just found out that his team is going to play for the national championship, and he has the character to stop by here and give us a shout out.

Ronnie, even as a native Floridian, I can't root for you in January. But I honestly can't think a guy I'd rather lose to.

Good luck, Taz. See you in Glendale.

Man, it's gotta feel good to know that no matter who you picked between the two of us, you were gonna be in at least one championship game.

Congrats on the SEC Championship and on the trip to Glendale! Well deserved and well played. Good luck against Pitcock & Company! :)
