Youboty replaces Hall on kick return... who can explain that one?
Didn't Conely say that Hall was hurt last week? (along with Pittman?)

Maybe this is due mostly due to Hall's injury, which may of gotten worse???

Having Hassam as 2nd line CB is very confusing... You would think that the #1 CB, and by many accounts player, would beat out a walk on Freshman... but on the bright side, this may signal that we have another diamond in the rough.

I don't have a problem with Hall sitting out the KR duties. As well as he did against UC, he has really done a relatively poor job every other game. The kid has an outstanding heart, but I'm not convinced he's the best person to be running those back.

Without Hall, who is going to tackle Holmes in the end zone?
That was funny. Holmes was pissed when that happened. I was glad Hall did it because we would be lucky to get to the 20 and I don't want to see Holmes get hurt returning (or have to sit out a quarter because of cramps).

Edit: JimOtis is quick.

According to today's Dispatch, Whitner has indeed reclaimed the SS starting spot.

Whitner reclaims starting job at safety
Wednesday, September 15, 2004
Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Donte Whitner is back to where he was before Ohio State’s preseason camp began, No. 1 at strong safety.

The sophomore had lost the job to Tyler Everett during camp, but he used strong performances against Cincinnati and Marshall to regain the spot.

"I knew if I came out and played my game, everything would pan out," Whitner said yesterday.

Not that Everett has been moved back. Just like the first two weeks, each can expect plenty of action Saturday when the Buckeyes travel to spread-andpass North Carolina State.

"There’s competition for jobs, but we want to play as many guys as we can," said co-defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, who coaches defensive backs. "So everybody knows that if they produce they are going to get a chance to play."

That is especially true now, considering senior co-captain and cornerback Dustin Fox will be out at least the next four games because of a broken bone in his left arm. With Ashton Youboty starting in his place, Harlen Jacobs might be considered the backup, but Whitner also is preparing to back up Youboty and E.J. Underwood, the other starting cornerback.

Strong safety is where Whitner wants to be on the opening snap, though. He had been considered the favorite to replace playmaker Will Allen this season. Whitner regained that status, he said, by just doing his job with gusto.

"I haven’t really changed anything," Whitner said. "I’m just focusing in on what I’m supposed to do, and focusing on making plays, wrapping up on tackles, and things like that."

No time for a break

Santonio Holmes had 10 catches for 224 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-21 win over Marshall, but he also had to leave the field in the third quarter for an intravenous refill of fluids after suffering leg cramps. Make that an overfill, because in the latter moments of the game, he told position coach Darrell Hazell that he badly needed to go to the locker room for, well, a pit stop.

"And he was like, ‘So you’re going to miss out on all the fun, us kicking a field goal or scoring a touchdown just so you can go to the bathroom?’ " Holmes related. "And I was like, ‘Well, I think I can stick it out.’ "

His two catches for 17 yards in the last 25 seconds set up Mike Nugent for his winning 55-yard field goal.

Ins and outs

Coach Jim Tressel said he expects fullback Branden Joe to be available for the first time this season, after recovering from a high-ankle sprain. Running back Antonio Pittman also can play after missing last week because of a deep thigh bruise. Defensive end Mike Kudla likely will miss the game with a neck strain. Jay Richardson moved into the rotation for Kudla. . . . The game at Northwestern on Oct. 2 at will start at 9 p.m. and be televised on ESPN2

An occasional cut and paste isn't too bad. Can't let it become the norm though.

We could access these articles through a web addressing loop hole that 1460thefan had in their web site. That is no longer available. So you need a subscription to view these articles from the Columbus Dispatch.

Linking won't work unless you have a subscription. Although it's still fine to link the article. Probably the best bet is to paraphrase what you read ... like you did. Good on ya.
