Hi all!

I've had a busy Summer (this is mostly a good thing!) and am scrambling to get us game ready. I had been waiting and hoping that Xenforo 2 would be released before the season started, so I've been holding off on major front-end upgrades for that reason, but the back-end is good to go. It may be that I have to migrate the software in-season this year, but that's not the end of the world; it's a pretty seamless process these days (anyone remember when it was a 12-16 hour ordeal because I had to hack back in all of our code modifications by hand?).

I have done a lot of work to limit the number of annoying ads. My hope is that the instances of blaring sound or obnoxious ad behavior is largely behind us (there will always be some bad actors).

Huge thanks and credit to those mods and admins who held the fort down over the Summer, I love this family here.

Elise is doing well, starting preschool THIS WEEK (she's so ready, I am not) and generally being a little bad ass. I'm looking forward to catching up with everyone and seeing how they and their families are.

Let's have a great season! I'm going to get back to kickstarting my behind in gear.

To any and all wondering about the poliboard, it still exists but is not linked from the forumhome. It is temporarily closed to new posts while we talk about the cost of it (long term users) versus the benefit of it (??). This is a site wide suspension and just as a stopgap before kickoff tomorrow as the season is upon us -- any and all opinions on the issue are welcome.

The benefits of the poli board are, in my IMO -

It keeps all that shit off of the other threads. This has always, to my knowledge, been the primary reason for the board and, along with swearing in the recruiting forum, the most strictly enforced rule of BP
This, of course, also served two purposes. First, it keeps those who don't want to read that crap free from having to read that crap while, second, providing those of us who do want to talk about politics a place to do so.

As to the problems the board has brought.. I mean, in that it's opt in, I guess I'm not all that sure how the hell someone can get to the point that it detracts from their BP experience. I mean, for me, it's pretty simple - if you don't want to read that shit, don't read that shit. I have, myself, intentionally taken a break from the board and it really wasn't all that hard. It's opt in, you know? If you can't deal, then opt out. I know things can get heated in there, and I've surely lit my fair share of matches and poured plenty of gas on flames too. But, and this goes to something Steve19 said in the Stuff thread - it has never kept me up at night, and I don't spend any time worrying about what someone thinks of me because of my political leanings.

At the end of the day, I don't care if it opens or closes... but, I would worry - especially considering the current state of our government - that things will boil over into other threads... causing people who have made the choice to stay away from the poliboard altogether to have to read that bullshit.

My suggestion was for an opt-in section, so that if you're eager for a buffet of awfulness, you can click through to find it, but it does not subject everyone to it by default. Lord knows I love the spectacle, but my militant documentation and rebuke of it should not define the experience for all.

Just documenting the spectacle (from the volume to the absurdity) requires a ton of posts, let alone any #hottakes on the topics or each other. The poli content takes over bpSpy regularly, and drowns out a lot of the other content.

Regardless of where you stand when it comes to politics, we absolutely need an escape from it sometimes and for many sports is supposed to be an escape from the drama of real life. This tweet seems relevant here:

I agree that it should be available and it's buyer beware.

My ask is that we don't have to see it in Spy or new posts functionality.

Kind of like the RR. You know it's there and if you want to go partake, knock yourself out. I don't necessarily want to see every thread getting bumped.

I'm working on insulating spy from it now, no matter what we do with it.

I do like the idea of it being walled off (but still accessible) like RR.

My take

Twitter is all the outlet you should need if you really need to express yourself or crank your blood pressure because someone you've never met is wrong about something.

You don't need to provide an additional outlet. If you do; that's fine. Your call. But I think it adds zero value.

The only thing I'm certain of is that we need to maintain an iron-clad zero tolerance of politics on other boards. In my opinion there have been many cases where people toyed with the line and should have been smacked back across it.

This is all the more important as our country devolves into a multi-sided civil war. I'm not kidding. The current climate isn't as bad as it was in 1820-1860; but it's heading that direction pretty fast. We cannot let that into BP.

If the south wants to leave again, this time we let them

ok?

Totally agree with suspending the Poli Forum. Football season is when we are all Buckeye fans...period. Most of the political shit starts almost immediately after NLOID, when essentially there is little football new up until just before the spring game. It really gets nuts after the spring game when aside from recruiting there is a huge void in football related news. I can BkB's concerns that political stuff could start spilling into other forums, but that's where the admins and mods need to be vigilant and stomp it out quick. Just my hundred yen...
